The Xperia X8 is officially announced by Sony Ericsson



The Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 was officially announced today, bringing a mid-size, mid-spec Android phone to the Xperia line. The particulars:

- Android 1.6 (Donut) with Mediascape and Timecape user interfaces.
- 3-inch capacitive touchscreen at 320x480 (HVGA).
- 600MHz processor.
- Quad-band EDGE (850/900/1800/1900), dual (900/2100) or quad-band (800/850/1900/2100) HSPA.
- 3.2MP camera.
- aGPS.
- WiFi.

HTC Vision: Dual-core processor, Android Gingerbread, 4.3-inch display, coming to T-Mobile?



With the launch of the Sprint HTC EVO 4G well underway, you’ve got to wonder what else the king of Android smartphone makers has up their sleeve for this holiday season. With devices like the Samsung Galaxy S (Vibrant), and Motorola Droid X almost upon us, is HTC just going to sit on it’s EVO and hope for the best? We think not, and according to a new rumor, HTC may be prepping a new superphone – a dual-core smartphone called the “Vision” – to hit T-Mobile later this year.

We thought the HTC Scorpion was looking good, and if this new dual-core device is intended to complement the Scorpion as part of HTC’s upcoming Android line up, we’ve got a lot to look forward to. We don’t have too much to go on about the device, but the few rumored specs we’re hearing about read like a dream.

The handset will be known as the HTC Vision, and is said to sport a dual-core 800 MHz processor, a 4.3-inch display, and possibly an 8-megapixel camera to boot. The device should also come with a full QWERTY keyboard.  We’ve seen these types of features starting to pop up on phones nowadays, but the real standout specification is the processor. We’ve still yet to see a dual-core processor on a smartphone yet, although the idea has been talked up quite a bit recently. If the dual-core CPU is really in the cards, it’s probably safe to assume that features like an HDMI-out port and front-facing camera may be on board as well.

The HTC Vision could be the answer to Motorola’s upcoming smartphone with the 2GHz processor that they had touched upon briefly, saying that it may be available by the end of the year. Obviously, people like to throw the term “iPhone killer” around a lot, but a lot of these Android superphones aren’t just killing iPhones, they’re killing lesser Android smartphones as well.

Motorola’s introduction of the Droid X looks like it’s trying to challenge the EVO more than anything else. While the Droid X does lack some features that we’re seen on the EVO – like a front-facing camera and kickstand – Motorola’s newest Android device still holds it own against HTC’s beast. While a front-facing camera may be all the rage right now, video chatting is just a tad bit awkward, and many people may not need such a thing on their smartphone. It’s cool to have the option, but it’s not something you’re going  to want to use all the time. Even with the best intentions, no one wants to see you when you’re in the bathroom!

So could the HTC Vision be the phone that T-Mobile has been waiting for? The Samsung Vibrant (Galaxy S) seems to be the highest end phone that T-Mobile has ever seen, and it’s still not available yet. Right now, we have to put this on the rumor pile, but it certainly wouldn’t be out of HTC’s character to launch such a device.

HTC Vision with Android, full QWERTY in the wild?




For reasons seemingly known only to Peter Chou himself, HTC has mostly steered clear of producing high-quality physical QWERTY devices running Android, despite the fact that there might be no phone manufacturer in the world more skilled at making them (let us remind you of the Touch Pro2, among many others dating back the better part of a decade). Anyhow, we caught wind last month of a possible entry in the form of the so-called "Vision," but we didn't have any visuals -- just a user agent profile that may or may not amount to anything. Well, that seems to be changing today with a couple blurry shots out of a Croatian site that allegedly shows the goods featuring a 3.7-inch display, a 1GHz processor (Snapdragon, we assume), and Android 2.1 with Sense (the launcher looks like stock Android in this photo, but the status bar is clearly HTC custom). At a glance, it doesn't seem to be the prettiest thing in the world -- but for a form factor traditionally associated with power users and suits, this might be just the ticket.

Rumor: Samsung Galaxy S2 (i9200): Android 3.0, 4.3 inch 1280×720 screen, 2 GHz CPU, 1 GB RAM

Expected to be released in early 2011, here is a render and supposed specifications of what’s going to be the Samsung Galaxy S2. The successor to the Samsung Galaxy S (Vibrant, Epic 4G, Captivate, or Fascinate depending on your operator) that’s only now hitting the market.



We’re looking at a 4.3 inch screen that has a resolution of 1280 x 720. That’s insane. That’s roughly 340 pixels per inch, aka “retina display” territory. Under the hood is a 2 GHz CPU (could it instead be dual 1 GHz processors?), 1 GB of RAM, and 4 GB of ROM. 32 GB of memory will be built in, and you can always add more with the built in microSD slot. It’ll have an 8 megapixel camera that can also capture full HD video. Whether that means 720p or 1080p we’ll leave to your imagination. Bluetooth 3.0, WiFi b/g/n, 3.5 mm headphone jack, accelerometer, and a gyroscope, all of which is supposed to be running Android 3.0, aka Gingerbread, due to be announced by the end of this year.

What do you think? Shenanigans or believable? The Google Nexus One set the benchmark for portable performance, and for it to be leapfrogged by something with twice the hardware horsepower in only 1 year sounds a bit … damn, that’s hard to swallow. Then again, the Galaxy S was announced in February at Mobile World Congress, yet it’s only coming out now, in July.

Whatever ends up happen, we’re big fans of more speed, more pixels, more everything. Got to wonder what this mofo is going to cost? Throw in some NFC, and hopefully some improved materials and build quality compared to the first Galaxy S, and you’ll have people lining up around the block to buy this thing.
