Newly Leaked Sony Ericsson Android Smartphone/Tablet



We all thought that the Dell Streak was the biggest Android phone out there, but it appears that we thought wrong. Sony Ericsson is making a device that will compete with the Streak. A new screenshot of the prototype (see photo above) has been leaked, and as you can see, it has a 5.5″ inch display and a QWERTY keyboard, which although it looks like a clamshell-style, is reportedly actually a slide-down. It’s also rumored that the device is running Android 2.1 (maybe even 2.2) and will hit the shelves in the fall.
The device seems slim and could easily fit in your pocket. We hope to find out that it is lightweight as well. Stay tuned with us folks, more coming soon.

“Shakira” Could Be The X10 Medium?



A couple of weeks ago, I showed a friend of mine the X10 Mini and told him that it was a mini version of the X10. He thought it was too small and I made a joke about Sony Ericsson probably releasing a “X10 Medium” soon for people who think the X10 is too large and the X10 Mini is too small. Looks like I was onto something.

A new photo has been leaked on the Chinese IT168 forum, this time depicting a phone codenamed “Shakira”. It looks like something in between the X10 and the X10 Mini. The specifications will probably also be a mix – here’s to hoping for the 1 GHz Snapdragon processor and high resolution display! Unfortunately, I somehow doubt the latter will happen. The clock widget looks pretty large compared to the one on the X10, which could mean that the resolution will be HVGA – 320 x 480 pixels.

By the way… The original photo included a watermark and lots of white space, but I decided to try Photoshop CS5’s new “Content-aware fill” feature to remove it and it worked out quite well!

Motorola Milestone XT720 announced: 8 megapixel cam, 720p video, and Droid heritage




Motorola has just outed a Europe-bound Milestone XT720, a handset intended to grab the attention of camera lovers with an 8 megapixel sensor, 720p / 24fps video and -- a first for Android handsets -- a xenon flash. Speaking of Android, this will come loaded up with version 2.1 when it launches later this month. Plans for 2.2 upgrades are, as usual, not yet formalized and not under discussion. Other specs include a 3.7-inch, 480 x 854 screen, a 550MHz ARM Cortex A8 CPU, and a promised 9 hours of talk time and 320 hours of standby time. It looks very much like Moto's selection of Droid-esque handsets that have been prowling the Chinese market, and it seems the company has enjoyed success with the keyboard-less form factor and is pushing it out to Europe. US release plans are also not being discussed -- it might happen and it might not, seems to us like it'll depend on the Euros' reaction. We're just getting to grips with the handset right now, and will furnish you with video of it as soon as we can.

P.S. We're told this handset is closer to the Motoroi than anything else, Motorola describes them as sister devices. We also spotted a network update from Orange on the demo handset, implicating it as a possible carrier for the XT720 in the UK.

Samsung Galaxy S launches across Europe, landing soon in U.S.



ast week’s news was all about the launch of the HTC EVO 4G on Sprint and I’m sure you’ve all heard by now that Apple has announced the new iPhone 4.  But since we are an Android dedicated site, I thought it would be good to focus on the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S.

Most of us have been completely oblivious to the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S.  We reported last week that Samsung was going to roll the handset out to over 100 countries this month, but we didn’t have any indication of which countries were on the list and when the phone would actually show up.  Well, apparently we have already missed the first few launches of the Galaxy S.

The Samsung Galaxy S went on sale in the UK last week and Samsung held a huge launch party for the handset in Zurich, Switzerland over the weekend.  We’ve been able to find a YouTube clip which gives a pretty brief overview of the entire event.  For those looking to get a little more information on the Galaxy S, Samsung has officially launched the handset’s site.  They have a pretty comprehensive overview of the handsets features, pictures, and quite an impressive interactive user guide.



As always, prices for unlocked GSM phone varies quite a bit.  A quick Google search shows that the price range Samsung Galaxy S goes from $499 for the 8GB model all the way up to $979 for the 16GB model.  When the handset finally does hit carriers across the UK and the rest of Europe, subsidized pricing for the Galaxy S could drop to almost nothing with a new two year contract with data plan.

Just to give you a taste of some of the impressive features the Samsung Galaxy S is packing, check out the list below:

A United States launch could be right around the corner. Several members of the press have already received teaser packages which claim the phone is “landing soon”. We reported the Galaxy S could appear on all four major carriers with the most likely being AT&T and T-Mobile.

Motorola Droid 2 goes full frontal -- but it'll have Motoblur?



Recently the Motorola Droid 2 was seen for the first time in Verizon's system, and today it has decided it was ready to pose for the camera. It looks like the glimpse of the keyboard we had a little while back was right on point. At this point not a lot is known about the device, but Droid Life says it was seen running Android 2.1, will have 8GB of internal memory as well as an 8GB storage card, a 3.7-inch screen, the aforementioned updated keyboard and a beefed up 750MHz processor, which makes it seem like a decent -- though not revolutionary -- upgrade from the original.

But before you can say "why mess with success," this puppy reportedly is running a newer version of MotoBlur. Maybe it's the updated version like the Flipout, or maybe it's something else, along the lines of the rumored (but neither confirmed nor detailed) Ninja Blur. Exclusive: Motorola Droid X preview



•Hardware: From afar, the Droid X looks like the EVO 4G, but up close the differences are obvious. Its slightly longer and wider, and it has four physical buttons along the bottom of the screen rather than touch-sensitive ones like those on the EVO. In hand, the phone feels really solid and we were surprised at how light it felt, though we could really do without the hump on the back. And yes, the large thing fits in a jean pocket, but not without slightly bulging.
•Screen: Apparently the Droid X has a 4.4-inch, FWVGA 854 x 480-resolution screen, though we couldn't confirm that on the device itself. Regardless, it was super crisp and the capacitive screen was mighty responsive to taps and multitouch gestures. Our one concern is the mirrored trim around the screen -- it makes the whole face of the phone extra glossy.
•Motorola Blur / Android: We confirmed that the Droid X was running Android 2.1 with some new sort of Motoblur (perhaps Ninjablur) skin. We didn't get to configure Blur with our social networks and contacts, but it didn't seem as "in your face" as the original. There's also a new navigation bar along the bottom that lets you easily jump to different Android panes. We can't really make a call on how we feel about this new Moto skin, but it does feel like a major improvement and it absolutely didn't slow down performance. We should also mention that preloaded on the phone was a Blockbuster application and a DLNA type app. Those two pieces combined with the fact that there will be a separate HDMI dock available has us thinking multimedia is the focus here.
•Camera / Camcorder: The Droid X has a 8-megapixel camera, and records 720p video. But here's the thing about the camera: you have to tap to focus and it doesn't refocus until you actually snap the picture. In addition, the camera button on the phone was super stiff, so when we went to shoot a pic the entire thing shook and blurred the image. You can see what we are talking about in the gallery below. As for video recording, it was a bit laggy while we were shooting at 720p, but the video plays back smoothly, and in our opinion, crisper than the EVO 4G. Nevertheless, as you can see in the clip below, the white balance keeps on changing and the exposure fluctuates.
