New Year’s 2011 breaks non-recurring iPhone alarm clocks (update: auto-fixes)




According to multiple users expressing their frustration through Twitter, come New Years 2011 (where ever you are) your iPhone alarm clock won’t function correctly. You may recall a similar bug in iOS when daylight savings time switched on but this is exactly the opposite. This New Year’s 2011 iPhone alarm clock bug shows its face to users without recurring alarms.

This means that anybody who sets an alarm just for tomorrow won’t be woken up by the iPhone’s built-in alarm clock application. To avoid this issue you need to set a recurring alarm by tapping repeat to select the days you want the alarm to go off on. Apple is yet to say anything and it is still unknown whether this is iOS 4.2.1 only or if it affects past system versions too. Be sure to tell everyone you know with iPhones! (via Engadget)

Update: We just ran a few tests and the above iPhone alarm clock issue fixes itself on January 3rd. You should follow our steps to avoid the issue above until then. Reader Aaron F. has let us know that the issue is occurring on his iOS 4.1 iPhone 4 as well (iOS 4.0.2 t00). Let us know if you see the issue on anything earlier. The issue does not appear to be present on iOS 3.x devices.

Apple Removes VLC From the App Store


Apple has removed VLC from the App Store after receiving a formal notification of copyright infringement from VLC developers.

The notification of infringement was filed because Apple’s iTunes Terms and Conditions don't allow users to install both free and paid apps on more than 5 devices. This goes against the original GNU license VLC's code is based on.

VLC developer Rémi Denis-Courmont said, "At last, Apple has removed VLC media player from its application store. Thus the incompatibility between the GNU General Public License and the AppStore terms of use is resolved - the hard way. I am not going to pity the owners of iDevices, and not even the MobileVLC developers who doubtless wasted a lot of their time. This end should not have come to a surprise to anyone."

Po meni najbolji fw za 3G je i dalje 3.1.3. iOS 4.1 radi za nijansu bolje od 4.0 (ma da ima slucajeva gdje radi mnogo bolje/gore, ali sad govorim o vecini). U principu na 3G ovaj fw ne donosi nista novo, nema GameCenter, nema HDR dodatka kameri... Tako da, ako te nije muka natjerala, nema potrebe za prelazom na iOS 4.1

iPhone Dev-Team Says No Unlock Until After iOS 4.2.5 or iOS 4.3

The iPhone Dev-Team has announced that there will be no unlock released until after iOS 4.2.5 or 4.3 is released.

This is of course disappointing for many but overall in the best interests of the community.

iOS — Apple’s big mean revenue machine




Back at the turn of the last decade industry naysayers and critics said Apple could never make it back to being a ten billion dollar company. They were so wrong, as we’ve noted previously, most of Apple’s earnings now come from products which didn’t exist back then — 65 percent of the cash comes from iOS device sales.

“iOS powered products (which did not exist three and a half years ago) generated 65% of all sales in the last quarter. OS X powered products generated 20% of sales. That’s a noteworthy combined total of 85%,” Horace Dediu writes.

He also notes that sales of OS X software and apps yielded another $786 million or 3% of total  – he also suggests another $600 million revenue comes from Apps sales at iTunes.
