Google je započeo "regrutaciju" partnera za svoj operativni sistem Android. Među najnovijim članovima sada su LG i T-Mobile.

Čelnici kompanije LG izjavili su da nadgledaju progres Androida i sigurni su da će implementirati svaku novu platformu za koju kupci budu pokazali dovoljno interesovanja. Vrlo je verovatno da LG negde u svojim laboratorijama čuva i neki prototip telefona sa Android operativnim sistemom, koji samo čeka povoljan trenutak da ugleda svetlost dana.

Kada je u pitanju T-Mobile stvari su mnogo jasnije. Džo Sims, jedan od čelnika ove telekomunikacione kompanije, izjavio je da je impresioniran Androidom. "Imaćemo više od jednog proizvoda sa ovim inovativnim operativnim sistemom", izjavio je Sims. A ovo bi moglo da znači da će se san (eng. dream) mnogih korisnika mobilnih telefona ispuniti. HTC Dream sa Google Android operatvnim sistemom.

A prema nezvaničnim informacijama koje dolaze sa globalne svetske mreže prvi HTC uređaj sa Android OS pojaviće se 6. maja.

A couple of weeks ago I got a new phone, it's an HTC Vogue (branded as OKTA Touch here in New Zealand).

It is a nice piece of hardware (MSM7500) but I'm not very impressed by the OS (Windows Mobile).

I thought I would make a start at getting Linux up and running on it.

Luckily the hardware is very similar to that used by the Google android project. There are some differences, the VIC is completely different and the phone software (AMSS) is a much older version so that won't be working soon. It seemed to hang when I turned off the MMU so I rewrote the bootloader (haret) to set up some identity pages and boot with MMU on.

It turns out that it didnt really hang, the peripheral port memory remap register just doesn't work on this system so you can't do any i/o with the MMU off. I figured out how the frame buffer works, wrote some debugging code to see what happens during boot and some new VIC code.

Now to get the SD card working, port this stuff to 2.6.24, get android running with the old AMSS and we're away.

Update: all ported to 2.6.24 and android boots (no input and phone not working so not much use yet).

Update: buttons should work, Volume up/down are the return and menu keys.

Update(9/4/08): Touchscreen works, it's not perfect and can't be calibrated but is usable.

Update(18/4/08): Radio now works for data. The latest zImage and initrd-android should let you use the browser and maps application(no keyboard yet though). You will need to put a username and password in default.txt depending on your provider (the ones there will work for Telecom NZ). The phone may say it has no network coverage but it should still work. To get the phone fully working we will need to write a ril library for it.

Video: Google demos the HTC Dream at I/O conference



Word on the street is that Google just busted out a live demo of the oft-rumored HTC Dream doing its Android-flavored thing at the company's I/O conference in San Francisco. Reports tell us that the device is a roughly 3-inch by 5-inch touchscreen phone with a slider keyboard. Not a lot is known right now, though apparently the device packs an accelerometer which allows you to tilt the unit to scroll across Google Maps or Street View. A video is on the way, so stay tuned for more information (and images) as we get them.

Krakow says Gphone is delayed to 2009. Wait, what?



Seasoned tech pundit Gary Krakow has a real puzzler here. He's claiming that while the Android OS should be ready for launch through a couple manufacturers by the end of the year, an unnamed source has told him that the actual "Gphone" from Google has been delayed into next year. That's great and all, but we thought the whole Gphone buzz was pretty much killed dead when Android got real. Sure, there was that one-off Samsung rumor about a couple Google-branded handsets supposedly due for September, but there was never much followup there. Google itself has never done much hinting at a Google-branded handset, instead choosing to work with Open Handset Alliance in building an OS for everybody. We'll be keeping an eye on this rumor, but obviously if it proves true we won't be seeing anything out of Google until next year -- which basically puts us right where we started. Thanks, Gary.

Android Devices Being Brought in Q4

Whenever we gadget fanatics hear that a product or service is becoming available in the second half of the year, in our heads we are really thinking, the beginning part of the second half. Not so with google’s Android OS; Android devices are expected to launch sometime in Q4 of this year, according to the Wall Street Journal.

So, while technically Q4 is still in the second half of the year, very few phones will be launched during that time. For example, T-Mobile should be the first cell phone carrier out of the gates in the fourth quarter. But Sprint, who was hoping for a Q4 release, was delayed until 2009.

Sprint wants to put its own branded features on Android, which will require a lot more effort and negotiation than originally expected. Sprint is also considering 86-ing plans to launch a 3G Android phone and simply aim to launch it on its forthcoming 4G WiMax network.

AT&T is also looking into Android but still has not made a decision, saying it is still determining if it is “feasible” to launch Android on their network.



While Android released a SDK last year, there have been several changes to the system and delays to the OS’s release. This is potentially very bad news for Google, as most of Android’s hype has been superseded by new phones from Apple and Blackberry.

How to run Android on your Nokia N810 easy

With due diligence and a little time, you’ll find that it’s very easy to swap the outer casing of your Nokia N810. But have you ever thought about swapping its operating system for another one?

Probably not, but in case you’re interested in trying out Google’s Android OS before it finally comes out, here’s your chance. There’s actually a two-step process that will let you run the Android OS on a Nokia N810, which is so easy, in fact, that you just wasted your time with reading those last three sentences. Here’s the secret.



First, download “android.img.bz2″ from this drop off point. [Link]

Then, when you’ve finished downloading that, install “android-installer.deb” from either of the following links.

I believe you’d have to do the downloading part on the Nokia N810 itself. And then afterwards, all you have to do is reboot and run the thing by hitting the new Android icon that will appear in the Extras Menu subfolder.
