Could Android esher in a new era of connected devices?

Android is Google's open source operating system designed to run on mobile phones, in particular those with ARM processors inside. What is to stop someone from taking Android and creating a UMPC like device or an ultra crazy thin subnotebook? Android applications should run on all devices and I'm sure Google Gears can be ported to enable offline access to the various Google services.

Intel is trying to get into the mobile phone space and their latest announced processors use 2W idling, which sounds impressive, until you realize that an entire Nokia N95 runs on less than that.

I know nothing is free and integration (making the software work on the hardware) costs begin in the low millions of dollars, but maybe, just maybe, someone can make a long lasting (12 hour battery life with heavy WiFi usage and bright screen) all day computing, full QWERTY keyboard equipped device that weighs less than 2 kilos and costs less than $1000.

If Palm only released the Folio I wouldn't be making this request.

Google: Android will outsell iPhone, we still love ya Steve

Watching Google tiptoe around its relationship with Apple as it rolls out Android is one of the most enjoyable aspects of watching the industry these days. This is perfectly illustrated in the words of Rich Miner, group manager for Google's mobile platforms, who said, "there's a much larger potential market on Android than for the iPhone." A truthful statement in all likelihood assuming that the OS is robust upon its global release later this year and available on handsets from HTC, Samsung, Motorola, and LG as expected. Miner then took a few shots at the iPhone SDK saying, "There are things I saw people doing with the first version of the Android SDK that it seems like you can't do with the iPhone at least at the moment." He then noted that the SDK had been downloaded 750,000 time (compared to Apple's 100k in 4 days) as of February. Naturally, he then applied a thick, brown coat of public relations salve saying, "[If I were a developer] I'd certainly be looking at the iPhone, and if you believe there will be lots of Android phones out there, as we do, I'd be developing for both platforms." Kumbaya my BossEricSchmidtSitsOnTheAppleBoard, kumabaya...

Run a web-server on your Android mobile phone with iJetty

No, Android isn't yet commercially available. But, if it were, you could be running your web-server straight from your Android handset with an Android port of the Jetty open-source web-server. Called iJetty, the Android version of Jetty allows any Android handset to use the Java app to run their very own mobile web-server.

Jetty ported to Android as iJettyWebtide's developers crunched out the Android OS port of Jetty "really fast," and the biggest challenge in porting the platform to Android was getting used to the Android emulator.

iJetty loads as a servelet that enables a mobile web-server that runs AJAX or Comet-enabled websites from their Android phone. iJetty allows users to control the web-server while on-the-go. The real draw here is the prospect of running a dynamic mobile website straight from your mobile phone! Imagine that - going about your day with your website literally in your pocket. Of course, the iJetty will put a serious load on your wireless data-connection. - you might want to check to see if that unlimited data plan of your is truly unlimited (ahem, Verizon). But, given the processing limitations of mobile phones, it might be best to use iJetty in conjunction with a web-server that can handle more than a few connections at a time.

Conversely, iJetty allows users to control their handsets from a remote laptop/desktop. Webtide is pushing iJetty as a way to remotely access your mobile phone's functions and features. With iJetty running on your Android handset, you can log into your mobile phone to make phone calls, manage call logs, view address books, check your SMS text messages - all from your home computer.

As mobile phones get more powerful and high-speed mobile broadband becomes more ubiquitous in everyday life, it's not too far a stretch to imagine everyone running around with websites stuffed in their pockets or purses. And, with projects like iJetty making the prospect of mobile website a serious reality, that sort of a future may indeed be on the horizon.

iJetty is available in stable form now. So, if you want to check it out, head on over to Google Code for the download link. Now, there's just that little matter of waiting for Android phones to become a commercial reality.

HTC's Dream again rumored to be first Android phone

We've been hearing about the HTC Dream (likely not pictured above) for what seems like an eternity on a tech timeline. Now "a person close to the situation" tells InfoWorld that the Dream is indeed HTC's Android phone. Remember, HTC is widely expected to be the first from the gate with a retail phone featuring Google's open source OS. The Dream is said to measure 3-inches wide by 5-inches long and feature a full QWERTY keypad that "either slides out or swivels." Right, exactly what Forbes told us 5 months ago. Still, it's always a good sign when the rumor mongers align. Whatever happens, we certainly expect the first Android phone to be exceptionally spec'd as a showcase of the OS' power and possibilities to come.

Nokia N810 can run Android, too!

While we're all eager to see what will HTC announce on May 6th, some people can't stand waiting. Hence they are presenting us a Dream tablet, until Dream phone is ready. Yap, they've succeeded to port the Android to Nokia N810 and from what we can tell, it looks pretty cool. Forget about phone functions, who needs them anyway. Stick to the RAZR for making phone calls and text, and leave all other things to this baby. Not that I'm willing to try it out with my N800 — I'm not that tech savvy — but I'm sure some people will give it a shot. More information is available on eLinux. In case their site is down, here's the cached version. Good luck!

Photo Gallery: Android running on a Qualcomm MSM7201 chipset

Now I know what you're thinking, that looks like something that came out of 1998, but this is just a mock housing. The real power is in the 400+ MHz Qualcomm MSM7201 chipset inside. PC Magazine was at CTIA and managed to take 12 images of the latest Android. New icons were shown, the browser is reportedly much snappier, font scaling is "beautiful" and it even runs Quake! I don't know about the rest of you guys, but Android excitement is definitely real at Into Mobile headquarters. Looking forward to seeing what HTC has up their sleeve next month.

HTC getting set to unveil Android-based 'Dream' handset on May 6?

We can't wait to get some serious Android-kit into our sweaty, grubby hands. The launch of the Android-powered HTC Dream is at the very top of our gotta-see list. And, HTC could be setting the stage to unveil the HTC Dream for Android-duty in the near future.

HTC sent out invitations for some sort of press event in London, UK that will "Witness the next wave of HTC Innovation." According to Vincent over at Slashphone, the event is slated to kick off on May 6, 2008 - which is perfectly in line with HTC's previous announcement that the Dream would go live in mid-2008.

At 5 inches long and 3 inches wide, the HTC Dream is purported to sport a full-body touchscreen, QWERTY keyboard, and be geared towards intuitive web-browsing.

It's not clear if HTC will indeed launch the HTC Dream at this May 6th event, but fingers are crossed on this side of the pond.

Run Android on your HTC TyTN II? No problem

Thanks to a crafty developer over at the XDA-Dev community, we’ve got a real live HTC TyTN II running a real live version of Google’s Android OS. The video is woefully short, but does show the user loading and running a working version of Android onto their HTC handset. The interesting thing here is that Android appears to run as an .EXE on top of the Windows Mobile shell, opening up the possibility to have Android running on a wide variety of Windows Mobile devices. Again, we’re not sure how functional this is just yet, but it’s a promising and exciting step forward for anyone looking to get a taste of Android before the first official devices launch.
