Welcome Back, Google Gphone Rumors

While the image above is a design originally conceived for Samsung, it represents the work of San Fransisco-based product design and development firm Ammunition Design Group. Why should you care? Well beyond the fact that their site is packed full of amazing designs done for huge companies including Panasonic, Dell, Nike, HP, Wells Fargo, Microsoft and more; Ammunition may be the team helping make the much-rumored Google Gphone a reality. Last year there was plenty of buzz surrounding the possibility of a Google-baranded handset, however most of it was squashed shortly after the announcement of Android. Even still, at no point did Google really deny the claim that it was working on its own handset. As of today, consider those rumors back in full force as Techcrunch reports state that a Gphone is most likely in the works. The article cites two main reasons for the claim:

   1. Hollywood Reporter Dan Cox’s recent piece stating, “The trio of Google execs also used the opportunity to talk about the inroads the company is making with its own branded mobile phone as a replacement for the iPhone,” after an interview with Google’s top execs Brin, Page and Schmidt.
   2. “A good source” that swears Ammunition is currently designing a “seriously beautiful” Gphone for Google.

If the rumors are true, this will definitely have a huge impact on the handset market as we know it. A few big handset manufacturers have run the game for quite a while now and Google could be the second “newcomer” to hit the market in just a few years and make a huge dent in the business.

HTC still on schedule to ship Android-powered smartphones in Q4 2008

As other handset makers are struggling to turn a profit in the dog-eat-dog world of mobile phone manufacturing, and other manufacturers are cutting prices to shake up the competition, HTC is solidly maintaining its course to take over the Windows Mobile and Android-powered smartphone market. Following on numerous HTC Touch Diamond and HTC Touch Pro handsets making it past the FCC’s testing process, and strong financial growth, HTC has announced that they’re still holding firm on their Q4 2008 launch window for their Android-powered smartphone offerings.

HTC has long been expected to unveil their HTC Dream smartphone running the newest mobile platform to go open-source, Google’s Android OS, late this year. And, with Sony Ericsson hoping to revive their financial downturn with the hotly anticipated Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 superphone in a matter of months, HTC is apparently aiming to be the first handset manufacturer to stir-up the smartphone market with Android-based hardware. Rumors that Android would be delayed aren’t enough to keep HTC from pushing their HTC Dream out to the public.

keepin’ on, HTC! We’re looking forward to Android-based smartphones to complement the Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional-powered HTC Touch Diamond and HTC Touch Pro handsets.

Google Android Phones Are Getting Closer

According to recent speculation and comments from mobile manufacturer HTC they are on target to release a Google Android phone in the UK later this year.Hui-ming Cheng commented that HTC is still on target to release a phone, thought to be the HTC Dream, running the new Android UI from Google towards the end of 2008.

Networks in the UK are understood to be interested in carrying the device but none have officially stated their intentions, presumably keen to wait until the phone has been developed.

Qualcomm are also building an Android based device and believe it can rival the iPhone - CEO Sanjay Jha said recently that the iPhone was not a perfect device and that “there are opportunities to do some things better”.

During a discussion Qualcomm also stated that their new chips were significantly more powerful than those in the iPhone. The Snapdragon line of voice and data chips feature a giant 1-gigahertz processor and the ability to run an 8 megapixel camera and HD video camera.

HTC Dream, or just some reference design, shown off on video

An all-too-brief, all-too-fuzzy video of a device alleging to be none other than HTC's Dream has surfaced on YouTube, showing a white smartphone of healthy size running Android and sliding horizontally to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard. From what little we can make out, we've got to say that it's not the sexiest thing we've ever seen -- and the Dream has been so built up in our minds at this point that we're expecting to have our socks knocked off hard by the time it's officially unveiled. The silver lining here might be that the phone in the video bears an uncanny resemblance to a "reference design" made by "a partner" of Google's that was demonstrated by none other than Google's own Andy Rubin back in February of this year. Of course, that reference design could be getting refined and retooled to end up becoming the HTC's inaugural Android effort anyway, but we're hoping and guessing that the real Dream's going to be at least a little more dreamy than this.

HTC Dream Comes True; FCC Approves First Google Android Phone

The HTC Dream, billed as the first device to come out of Google Android and the Open Handset Alliance, was approved Monday by the Federal Communications Commission, putting to bed rumors that Android-powered open source devices were running well behind schedule.

According to documents posted by the FCC on Monday, the HTC Dream has received approval. FCC approval, an important hurdle in the device development process, grants permission for wireless devices to be used in the U.S.

While details were scant -- thanks to a confidentiality request HTC filed with the FCC -- the documents hosted on the federal commission's Web site indicate that the HTC dream will operate on the 1700 WCDMA band, which is T-Mobile's 3G network. It will also support Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0. The Dream will feature a GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/1900 radio. The device will also sport a "jog ball," which is likely similar to the navigation track ball featured on certain BlackBerry models like the Pearl and the Curve.

Rumors of the HTC Dream, also known as the HTC G1, began circulating in earnest last week when TmoNews, an unofficial T-Mobile blog, reported that the Dream will be the first Google Android-based device. Early reports indicated the Dream will be available for pre-order Sept. 17.

Last week, details indicated that the HTC Dream would feature a large 5-inch by 3-inch touch screen display and a sliding QWERTY keyboard, along with a 3-megapixel camera. Also making appearance last week was a video said to depict an HTC Dream in use.

While T-Mobile has not yet announced availability and service plans for the Dream, TmoNews said last week that users who buy the Dream will be required to use a Google Gmail email account. The device is expected to cost $399, but T-Mobile customers can grab on for $150 during an exclusive week-long pre-sale. Sales to the public will likely come in October, when the device will cost about $250.

Google has said that Android-based devices would hit the market by the end of 2008. That timeline was called into question, however, when reports surfaced indicating that Android-powered handsets had been plagued by delays and may not see the light of day until 2009. Google, for its part, has maintained that Android plans remained on schedule.

The first Google Android device, or GPhone, is good news for Google, which is facing tough competition on the open source and Linux mobile operating system front. Much like Google's Open Handset Alliance, two other groups are vying to create the open source devices of choice: the Symbian Foundation and the LiMo Foundation.

The non-profit Symbian Foundation, announced in June, took the open source world by storm. Launched by Nokia, the foundation features key partnerships with Sony Ericsson, Motorola, NTT DoCoMo, AT&T, Samsung, LG Electronics, Texas Instruments and a host of others to extend a unified mobile software platform. Industry analysts have said the Symbian Foundation could beat out Google's Android as the open source mobile platform of choice, prompting rumors that Android and Symbian may eventually pair up and attack the market together.

Another contender looking to steal Android's thunder is the LiMo Foundation, which earlier this month added a host of new partners and several new Linux-based devices its lineup. The open-source mobile consortium, which launched in January 2007, has increased its ranks to more than 50 partner companies in its drive to deliver an open handset platform to the entire mobile industry.

Android 0.9 SDK beta
