E Ink Cell Phone Concept



E ink displays have been around for some time already, so designer Anthony Reed has come up with this concept that could usher in a new age for these devices. Although you won't be able to get high powered displays as seen on current handsets, the simplistic grid styling and gray scale range works great for those who still believe that everything else looks better in black and white. Perhaps they should ditch their computers and go back to typewriters, hmm?

Google releases My Location with Wi-Fi

Starting to get the hand of being able to pinpoint your location on the map with Google Maps for Mobile and the trusty old celly, are we? Well, you can count on even more accuracy with regards to your location, as Google has now released a feature called My Location with Wi-Fi, which would enable anyone with a Wi-Fi enabled device to find out their locations using nearby Wi-Fi access points.

In a blog post, Google puts it this way: “Since the range of a Wi-Fi access point is smaller than that of a cell phone tower, this often results in a much more accurate position.” Which is right, since Wi-Fi APs often only cover about a hundred meters in most places.



BlackBerry users will be the first ones to get a taste of this Wi-Fi goodness, simply by downloading the latest version of Google Maps for Mobile, while other mobile platforms (even Google’s own Android) will be getting their share of My Location with Wi-Fi soon.

Also, while Google promises that “Wi-Fi-based location is available in many major cities around the world,” they also say that “coverage and accuracy will vary.” So don’t get antzy if in case you don’t manage to use this new feature right away.

Four new Pantech phone concepts to feed your geeky dreams

Pantech, South Korea’s third largest handset manufacturer, is doing well both in its home country and in the US, especially since it has recently announced two new phones for AT&T.

But we’re not going to talk about AT&T’s phones right now, although I’m sure many of its subscribers would wish to have at least one of the devices presented below.

The Pantech Design Community, comprised of 20 college students, has showcased four new concept phones that Pantech might, someday, build.

The first concept is called Coralliform Water. Obviously inspired by the sea and its life, the phone is a slider that somehow looks like a budding flower, when closed. No tech specs were given, but the Coralliform Water seems to have a touchscreen display and a camera.

This phone would especially look good in a lady’s hands and, to be honest, I wouldn’t mind having one. Not at all. Here it is:



Easter Moai, the second new Pantech concept, is designed to express the “multifaceted nature of human beings”. It has a “wave” touchscreen LCD, a touch key, a dome key and lots of other keys on its sides, put there to increase the phone’s functionality.

The Easter Moai can also be attached to some sort of support, of unknown purpose:



Recy_Q is a full-touch phone that also has a sliding QWERTY keyboard. the device features touch keys that are embedded into its metal frame, for an easier control over its User Interface. Recyclable material should be used for the case and the keypad.

I’m not sure about how those tiny “wings” of it would feel in hand, but the phone surely looks good:



Softy Lofty, the fourth new Pantech concept, is the weirdest of them all. I can’t figure out where the display of this phone is. Anyway, the handset is designed “to offer as much visual and emotional comfort as possible” and to emit a vague light when re-charged:



So, apart from this last concept, the other three ones look like they could soon be in stores, probably in South Korea first. But this is all up to Pantech and its manufacturing plans.

Sony Ericsson says UIQ is teh sux, probably doesn't bode well for platform's future



As part of its coverage of the Symbian Smartphone Show going down right now in London, All About Symbian is reporting that Sony Ericsson's Patrick Olson has declared UIQ "dead." Seeing how SE has always been UIQ's biggest proponent in the face of the much larger, much more influential S60, those are harsh, biting words that probably spell doom for the platform -- especially in light of the recent layoffs and integration with the Symbian Foundation as they push toward a single, unified Symbian stack. For what it's worth, there's no indication that Moto has given up on it, having just recently released the UIQ-powered Z10, but since when can Moto singlehandedly save a platform -- especially when they refuse to release the devices globally?

Voleli ili ne Motorola telefone, najnoviji model ove američke kompanije jednostavno će vas oboriti s nogu.

Napravljen po uzoru na ručne satove visokog stila, Motorola Aura poseduje pokretni deo koji se okreće i sastoji se od 200 delova. Čak 130 od tih delova omogućuju da se telefon rasklapa i do 100.000 puta pre nego što se pokvari.

Ovaj telefon zanimljivog dizajna poseduje ekran veličine 1.55 inča u dijametru, koji može da prikaže sliku u 16 miliona boja i 300 tačaka po inču. Ekran je takođe obložen i kristalom safira od 62 karata, kao prevencija od udaraca i ogrebotina.

Od tehničkih karakteristika treba istaći da je telefon quad band, poseduje GPRS i EDGE. Interna memorija je 2 gigabajta a poseduje i kameru od 2 megapiksela.

Cena Motorola Aura telefona iznosiđe 2000 američkih dolara, a u prodaji će se naći početkom decembra.

Access Announces ALP v3.0 and ALP mini



Access Linux Platform 3.0Access has announced a number of new initiatives around its Access Linux Platform at a company event this week in Tokyo. The company has announced version 3.0 of the Access Linux Platform. Providing little technical details, the company says the new version includes LiMo compatibility and a new advanced UI that features highly detailed visuals, smooth transitions and animations.

In addition, the company has announced a new product based on ALP called the Access Linux Platform mini. ALP mini is targeted at feature phones and low-end smartphones to Internet-enabled, beyond-PC devices, such as portable navigation devices, portable media players and set-top boxes. ALP mini omits Palm OS Garnet compatibility as well as native Linux applications.

Access says ALP mini is well-suited for the more stringent cost and performance requirements of mobile and Internet-enabled devices in emerging markets. According to reports, the ALP subset evolved from the China MobileSoft Linux stack acquired by PalmSource in Dec. of 2004, prior to Access's acquisition of PalmSource. Access added its own NetFront Browser, Java and widget development kits, and other select ALP components to the new product.

ALP mini is available immediately to licensees, however the company has not said when its next generation ALP v3.0 will be available.



In device news the company announced that Japan's NTT DoCoMo will use ALP as a successor to its MOAP/L Linux platform and could begin distributing 3G FOMA phones based on ALP in the second half of 2009.

Access also confirmed that the recently revealed Edelweisss smartphone is powered by ALP and will debut in the Russian market, though there is still no word on a date, price or carrier announcement.

"The openness and flexibility of Linux are driving innovation in mobile phones and Internet-enabled devices," said Toru Arakawa, CEO, president and co-founder of ACCESS. "With the introduction of ACCESS Linux Platform mini and the enhanced capabilities of our LiMo-compliant ACCESS Linux Platform v3.0, we can offer our customers a complete range of solutions extending from feature phones through low-end smartphones, to high-end smartphones and Internet devices that will further enable the next generation of mobile Internet use."

UIQ je i zvanicno mrtav, a ubici i grobaru ime je Sony Ericsson...

Stvarno steta...... OS je imao potencijala ali su uspeli da ga ubiju......

Sony Ericsson najavio kraj UIQ-a



Već neko vreme je poznato da se UIQ platformi bližio kraj, nakon što je Sony Ericsson, vlasnik 50% deonica UIQ fondacije, razmestio 200 radnika sa UIQ odeljenja i odlučio da portuje svoja rešenja za, sada Nokijinu, Series 60 platformu. Takođe su stvari bile prilično jasne kada su otkazali dva veoma dobra UIQ telefona - SE P5 (Paris) i SE G702 (BeiBei), a povodom toga se nije oglasio niko iz SE-a niti UIQ-a!

Sve je kristalno jasno nakon izjave funkcionera Sony Ericssona Patrick Olson-a, koji je u Londonu, na Symbian Smartphone Show-u, izjavio da UIQ nije privukao ni operatere, ni proizvođače, ni korisnike. Niko iz Motorole, vlasnika drugih 50% UIQ-a, nije želeo da komentariše tu izjavu. Prethodno su najavili da će nastaviti da podržavaju UIQ i izdaju nove telefone opremljene njime, pošto su svoje deonice kupili pre skoro pola godine. Međutim, jasno je da će imati jako težak zadatak da ga održe živim sada kada je SE izašao iz te priče, te se čeka trenutak da i oni pređu na buduću open-source Symbian S60 platformu.

Ovaj potez Sony Ericssona može biti dobra vest za ljubitelje S60, pošto će proizvođači dobiti još jednog, i to vrlo jakog, konkurenta. Kruže glasine da će prvi S60 uređaj iz SE-a izaći do kraja ove godine, ili najkasnije početkom sledeće.

Nikad mi i nije bila jasna ciljna grupa UIQa... niti su to poslovni korisnici (koji će se pre odlučiti za WM), niti korisnici okrenuti ka multimediji (koji će se pre odlučiti za S60)... tako da je ovo manje više i bilo neminovno
