Ditch your smartphone and join the Nokia 1100 club



This is a novel idea -- one that we likely wouldn't do, mind you -- ditch your smartphone and see if your world actually does crumble using only voice and text to communicate. Nokia Conversations' Charlie thought that Nokia's best selling basic set, the Nokia 1100 -- some 200 million of these have been sold -- is the perfect device for this challenge as it does what a phone has to do and nothing more and that's call and (arguably) text. The rules are dead simple, live a month using only the lowly Nokia 1100. So? What are you all waiting for, grab one off eBay, donate your iPhone / Touch Diamond to charity and get to it. Oh yeah, feel free to let us know how you deal with the shakes and crying, but please, post that info from a computer.

Rumor: Motorola RAZR3 Vxx "Ruby" in the works

There’s an interesting rumor floating around various mobile message boards. And, judging from the past performace of the posters, they are likely to be true.

It seems that in addition to their  multimedia flagship Alexander/ZN12, Motorola is also working on the next successor to their RAZR series, codenamed “Ruby”.

It will be  called… you guessed right - Motorola RAZR 3 Vxx (not sure what numbers will be for the x’ses).

MotoRAZR 3 design will include metallic body and overall size somewhat smaller then current RAZR 2 V9. The front screen will have 6 customizable touch hotspots for quick application access.

Motorola RAZR3 specsheet should include:

    * 3G HSDPA connectivity
    * 5 megapixel camera  with autofocus and LED flash
    * Built-in GPS
    * Wi-Fi

And, here’s the interesting part.

Motorola RAZR3 will be based on Symbian UIQ  3.3 platform, with strong customization by Motorola.

The current software customization for Motorola “Ruby” is still pretty buggy, but it should be improved soon. After that “Ruby” software baseline will be used to produce several additional phones in clamshell, candybar and slider form factors.

The next Moto RAZR3 is expected in Q1 2009.

Hopes still alive for Helio Ocean 2, now as Umbrella

Remember the mobile phone called Helio OZ2, as it was known when the device was spotted on FCC earlier this summer. The Pantech made device was planned by Helio as Helio Ocean 2, but ever since Helio was taken over by Virgin Mobile in June, it disappeared from the news and everybody seems forgotten about the phone.

One may wonder why I am recalling it, but it seems important as the there are latest indications about launching of the device somewhere in early 2009 as revealed by the sources from virgin mobile at the latest CTIA event. They also confirmed that work is under progress for Ocean 2, and you may soon see it tagged under the new brand name, Umbrella.



However, Helio subscribers can expect only two changes to their services. One, an increase in included minutes on the $80 talk plan (from 1,500 to unlimited) and the other, addition to Helio download store in the form of Virgin Mobile’s social networking apps and tools.

Not much different from the Helio Ocean, the smartphone is expected to come jam packed with:

    * 3 megapixel camera
    * Dual slider, just like the original
    * micro SDHC support
    * 1GB internal storage
    * In-browser Flash support
    * 30fps video recording
    * Touch-sensitive directional pad
    * PC sync capability

Naša slova i SMS

Kada sam nedavno video da Symbian telefoni drastično smanjuju maksimalni broj karaktera u SMS-u kada se unese neko naše slovo, mislio sam da je to propust u firmveru Nokija (pretpostavljajući da SMS "po defaultu" podržava Unicode). Međutim, kod Symbian-a je moguće u podešavanjima poruka odabrati karakter set za slanje poruka, i to postoje dva izbora:

- Full - Unosom prvog našeg slova maksimalni broj karaktera je smanji na 70;
- Reduced - Korisnici imaju iluziju da koriste naša slova, međutim pri slanju se ona "ćelave" (čćžšđ -> cczsd), tako da se pošalje 160 karaktera.

I mislio sam da je to propust u firmveru, sve dok nisam video da je i kod Windows Mobile-a tako:



Dakle, pri unosu jednog našeg slova smanji se maksimalni broj karaktera na 70, a svako slovo troši na dalje po jedan karakter. Evo šta kaže Wikipedia:

Dakle, standardno enkodovanje je 7-bitno i maksimalni broj karaktera na raspolaganju je 160, a u svakoj narednoj poruci 153 (ako se poruka sastoji iz više delova), dok je full Unicode enkodovanje (neophodno za naša slova) 16-bitno i maksimalni broj karaktera je 70, a u svakoj narednoj poruci 67. Ipak nije bio propust u firmveru .

Symbian i dalje vlada Smartphone scenom, WM pao na treće mesto

Prema istraživanjima koje je sproveo Gartner, prodaja Smartphone uređaja u drugom kvartalu tekuće godine izgleda ovako:



Vidimo da, iako je procenat malo pao u odnosu na isti period prošle godine, Symbian i dalje drži ubedljivo najveći deo Smartphone tržišta, sa nešto malo više prodatih uređaja nego prošle godine. Ono što je zanimljivo je da je Windows Mobile (koji u tabeli obuhvata i PPC i Smartphone uređaje), iako je zabeležio rast prodaje, izgubio drugo mesto, koje sada drži RIM (Blackberry), koji je zabeležio mnogo veći rast. Vidimo i proboj iPhone-a (Mac OS X), koji je, kao što je i očekivano, zabeležio ubedljivo najveći rast. Biće zanimljivo videti rezultate u narednom periodu, pošto treba uzeti u obzir telefone koji su se nedavno pojavili - iPhone 3G, kao i HTC-ove Touch Diamond, Touch Pro, pa i Touch HD, koji će sigurno ostaviti veliki trag na tržištu u narednom periodu.

Hands-on with LG's Lotus for Sprint



Okay, okay, we admit it: we went a little harsh on the Lotus before we had a chance to cradle it in our own palm. It turns out that LG's latest texting machine for Sprint is actually quite a looker in a bizarre, quirky way, with the black version taking on a well-constructed, businesslike aura and the purple doing a reasonably good job repping the high-fashion set. Don't get us wrong, it still looks downright weird when closed -- mainly because we're just not used to a square flip, we suppose -- but when it's open, it looks as decent as any featurephone on the market. We didn't have a great opportunity to put the keyboard through it's paces (stay tuned for that), but that new One Click UI paradigm looks like a winner at a quick glance -- so even if you're too fat-fingered to enjoy top SMS speeds, at least you'll enjoy watching your mistakes materialize on the screen in glorious detail.

Kompanija Research In Motion predstavila je zanimljiv multifunkcionalni mobilni telefon - BlackBerry na rasklapanje.

Oficijelni naziv uređaja je BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8820. Telefon je opremljen WiFi i Bluetooth 2.0 konekcijom, kao i velikim QVGA internim ekranom. Postoji i drugi (eksterni) ekran za pregled dolaznih poziva, prikaz datuma i vremena.

Kanadskoj kompaniji je ovo prvi uređaj ovog tipa, a novi BlackBerry se odlikuje audio-video čitačem, kamerom od dva megapiksela sa fleš opcijom.

Za navigaciju je uadužena mala tastatura, a telefon ima ugrađen i veb čitač. Takođe je prisutan i GPS prijemnik i 3G podrška.

Novi BlackBerry trebalo bi u prodaji da se nađe tokom ove jeseni ali nije poznata cena po kojoj će se prodavati.

NeuroSky Prototype Sensor Controls Phones



NeuroSky Inc. has come up with a new prototype sensor that uses your brainwaves to control your cell phone. This seemingly magical procedure is based on similar \medical technology, measuring brain relaxation and concentration to relay a corresponding command to a handset. I'm not sure just how accurate this technology is, and if one gets really frustrated at the cell phone not responding appropriately, will this mean the phone explodes by itself? Jokes aside, such technology would be useful for folks who have lost the use of their hands, and the practical application is far and wide. I see plenty of potential in this, but NeuroSky still has a long way to go before such technology is perfected.

Revolutionary director pushes the limits with Nokia Nseries to create innovative cinematography



Nokia is proud to announce the latest Nokia Nseries video project from writer/director Mike Hodgkinson: a new music video for "Surfing at 32ºF" by Eskimohunter that premiered at the Hollywood Hill BigBrain Summit on Friday, September 12.

Shot entirely on Nokia Nseries devices, this video used a variety of creative techniques available using these portable and feature-rich multimedia computers. "Each of the Nokia Nseries devices I used was perfectly suited to the kind of experimental, 'out-there' shots I wanted to capture for 'Surfing at 32ºF'.

For example, as a highly compact slider, the Nokia N95 slotted neatly into the customized pouch I attached to my fishing-line monorail, while the flip-out screens on the Nokia N93 and Nokia N93i allowed me to cover the lens with DIY color filters quickly and easily," said Hodgkinson. "Everything I imagined, the Nokia Nseries devices let me create.

I really wanted to push the Nokia equipment to its limits, and each responded brilliantly. I've taken Nseries devices underwater, attached them to helium balloons and dangled them 100 feet above the Los Angeles River . . . and I've never lost a shot."

"Surfing at 32ºF," the second video directed and shot by Hodgkinson using Nokia Nseries devices, continues to stretch the capabilities of Nokia's high-end mobile devices. Hodgkinson chose to use only the Nokia N93, Nokia N93i and Nokia N95 as his arsenal to shoot the music video, as well as a "behind the scenes" video - all three of which feature top of class Carl Zeiss optics and a variety of on-device editing capabilities.

In 2006, Hodgkinson filmed and directed the video for "Oceans" by Rob Dickinson, former singer from the U.K. rock band, Catherine Wheel. As the first music video shot on a Nokia N93 device, the first mobile device video to incorporate CGI special effects, and the first mobile device music video featuring underwater and aerial footage - "Oceans" was truly a landmark in mobile, guerilla film-making.

The Nokia N95 features a five-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and 30 frames-per-second video capture. The Nokia N95 films video in high quality MPEG-4 file format and enables a connection from the device directly to a television for an instant movie experience. With the high speed capabilities of the Nokia N95 over the 3G or Wi-Fi networks, uploading images and video from the device to a variety of online photo sharing sites or blogs is a snap.

The Nokia N93 and N93i each feature a 3.2 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, DVD-like video capture and optical zoom. The Nokia N93 can connect directly to a TV for a widescreen movie experience or upload images and video to online albums or blogs. Consumers can also create high-quality home movies and burn them to DVD with the Adobe Premiere Elements 2.0 software that comes in box with the Nokia N93.
