Telly™
PV's mobile broadcast receiver. Rapidly expand mobile broadcast TV services to new and existing subscribers.

Rapidly Expand Mobile Broadcast TV Services to New and Existing Subscribers

Telly puts your broadcast TV services into the hands of new subscribers and current users with WiFi-enabled devices, such as mobile phones, PCs and personal media players. With Telly in their pockets, users can receive and display a broadcast TV signal on their mobile devices.
High Quality TV

Telly technology is based on PV's CORE™ multimedia framework, which has been deployed in more than 248 different mobile devices and shipped in more than 249 million units. Broad and efficient support for the latest compression standards means TV, video and audio signals are optimally processed for high quality presentation to the user on the target device.
Intuitive Electronic Program Guide (EPG)

Users can intuitively browse TV programming by channel or time through the EPG. In play mode, they can stop and start playback, adjust volume, and switch between full screen and normal viewing, all from a dedicated interface on their mobile devices.
Subscriber Security

Authentication, conditional access and digital rights management are available on Telly, enabling premium broadcast services at launch.
Easy to Set Up

It's as simple as pushing the power button, and users have access to broadcast TV on their phones. During the initial setup, the receiver automatically recognizes the user's mobile device and optimizes the compression rate and format of the video frames to suit the specific device capabilities.
Easy to Use

When the mobile broadcast receiver is used with a handset as the target device, the user controls the TV service experience through the handset. Telly does not alter telephony functions—so users can answer a phone call or read messages while using the broadcast TV.
Suppported Handsets

At launch, Telly will support the most popular and powerful OS platforms available on the market. The Apple iPhone and iPod Touch, Nokia N series handsets and Windows Mobile 6 based devices will be enabled from the start. Additional platforms will follow.

The Telly hardware and user interface can be branded by the service provider. Telly measures 6.4 cm wide x 1.8 cm high x 4 cm deep. It will be available later this year.

Olympics Water Cube-themed cellphone hits China

The Olympics may be over, but it looks like the tie-in products (official and otherwise) are still going strong in China, where this Water Cube-themed cellphone recently made its debut. Of course, apart from that eye-catching design (and slightly unusual keypad), there's nothing too stand-out with this one, with it boasting tri-band GSM connectivity, a 2.4-inch LCD, dual cameras, all the usual media-playing features and, apparently, a "3D interface" of some sort. From the looks of it, the phone is only available from wholesaler Sourcing Gate at the moment but, if you've really got to have one for your Olympics collection, you can order a sample for $175.

LG Prada II specs and details - New LG Prada II with 5 megapixel camera

You mean fashion-forward handsets like the LG Prada KE850 can’t get by on looks and designer label alone?

Even traditionally feature-lacking luxury phones like those from Nokia’s luxury arm, Vertu, are starting to adopt current generation technology in their super-expensive handsets.

And, in keeping with this trend, it looks like LG is working on a successor to their LG KE850 Prada phone.

The LG Prada II, as it’s apparently going to be called, will reportedly sport a 5 megapixel camera and HSDPA 3G connectivity on the coveted 850Mhz band. That’s all good news for feature-hungry fashionistas out there, but will it be enough to compete with the iPhone 3G and its unmatched UI?

We’ll have to wait and see how the LG Prada II fares against the iPhone 3G and the HTC Touch Pro… and the HTC Dream G1… and the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1… you get the point.

LG Prada II specs:

    * Quad-band GSM/EDGE, dual-band HSDPA (850MHz/2100MHz)
    * 950mAh battery
    * 240×400 3.0? screen
    * 5 megapixel autofocus camera with flash and VGA recording
    * Bluetooth 2.1
    * Wi-Fi b,g
    * Infineon MP-EH + M180 chipset
    * Motion sensor
    * FM Radio
    * 104.5 x 54 x 16.8 mm

I want to love my Samsung but,
I just don't!

I want to love my Samsung i8510 but ... .. ... I just don't. I have had it for a few days now and I have popped my SIM card back in my Nokia N82. The Samsung INNOV8 is a fantastic device, there is no doubting that.

It is however lacking something. It’s not groundbreaking in the way the Nokia N95 was and it is like it says and innovation.

My aim in a mobile device is the ultimate convergence. I have been using my Nokia N82 as what I believe to be pretty close to that on the basis below:

    * Camera - Above average and just about enough to ditch a separate point and shoot. The images are a little grainy but xenon helps a lot with that in no/low and average light conditions.
    * Video recorder - perfect for what I need.
    * MP3 Player - Player above average with podcasting integration although slightly below average audio performance.
    * Radio - Despite the lack of RDS the reception is pretty good when I listen to radio.
    * Sharing media - I use Shareonline a lot to upload to Flickr and Ovi.
    * GPS device for navigation and mapping - With A-GPS enabled this device is brilliant for navigation and mapping although screen is a little small.
    * Web - Web browser is suitable for browsing on the go although screen size is a limitation.
    * Email - I use Gmail through IMAP and get my emails pushed through.
    * Gaming - Is a good gaming device but not as good as the N95, it works enough for me. Ngage games are hit and miss but more than you get on other phones.
    * Watching video - Works well in most formats, I mainly use emTube and Coreplayer.

So that is kind of the benchmark I have set for a convergence and this is how the INNOV8 fairs in the same catagories:

    * Camera - Image quality is unrivaled from what I have seen on a cameraphone. It is equal to my £120 cyber shot camera in terms of noise levels which is impressive. Lack of xenon means the sensor has to work harder in low light conditions and is pretty rubbish at night unless the object is less than 1m away.
    * Video recorder - Better than N82, it has focus before shooting as well as the ability to make use of the LED's as a video light. The QVGA@120fps is a bit of a gimmick for me to be honest and is only in there because it’s possible.
    * MP3 Player - Standard S60 player that doesn’t separate podcasts from the music and has no other enhancements. The sound quality is far superior to the N82. There is no background noise compared to the N82 where it is quite audible.
    * Radio - It has RDS but I have found so far that the reception is not as good as my N82 which is frustrating.
    * Sharing media - Shozu is one of the bundled apps that allow me to upload to Ovi, Flickr and Facebook but it’s not as simple and nice to use as Shareonline.
    * GPS device for navigation and mapping - A-GPS is not as good as Nokia. It uses Samsungs GPS+ which downloads 7 days worth of data but when I use GPS software it takes a while to lock (1-2mins). If I have my N82 it will lock pretty much everytime even indoors in less than 1minute but the Samsung tends not to lock indoors. Navicore and ViewRanger are my main software and they both work which is good.
    * Web - Web browsing is brilliant with the scroll pad and the 2.8" screen, more than enough for what I need
    * Email - I set up Gmail on this and set it for automatic retrieval but it doesn’t seem to push the mail through. Settings match the N82 exactly but it doesn’t work. Auto retrieval every 15mins is OK though.
    * Gaming - Is a good gaming device. The built in games are exactly as the N-Gage versions but I would love to have Ngage on this device.
    * Watching video - This works well playing FLV files in the flash player and DivX, MP4 in real player. I haven’t tried WMV yet. Sound quality is good through speakers and headphones.

So overall it is nearly there but not. The N82 does everything I want but overall it does them all as an average whereas the i8510 doesn’t do all I want it do but the things it does do it does excellently.

The hardware is spot on so it’s all down to software. The other niggly things are like you cant disable auto keypad lock, it tells you to remove your charger to save energy, many apps that I like to use wont install, there is no WLAN wizard, google search doesn’t work, the icon links you to the browser, the auto-rotate is 90 degree.

I wonder if I am being a bit too hasty. I mean when I got my N95 I was instantly happy because there was nothing about that was even close. It was a new device and was simply groundbreaking but many N95 owners will agree that it took a good year before the N95 became truly an exceptional device after and now it is still up there with the best.

Will the INNOV8 just fade away or will it grow and develop in the N95 did. Do you think in 6 months time all of my issues will be sorted (either solved or hacked) and I will be in love with it?

HTC hits the big time - now 3rd biggest smartphone brand in Q208

HTC has managed to enter the hallowed halls of the 5 biggest smartphone producers, by not just moving from position 7 to position 5, but all the way to position 3, displacing Sharp by growing 119% and shipping 1.33 million own brand Windows Mobile smartphones.  However a total of 3.87 million Windows Mobile smartphones were shipped, and we know HTC produces about 70% of the ODM Windows Mobile devices, meaning their real shipments are a lot higher.

The data is for Q2 2008, the period running up to the shipment of the HTC Touch Diamond, so its likely HTC’s total shipments for Q3 will be even better.

Of course HTC dreams much bigger, hoping to become a top 5 phone producer, which is certainly still very far off, but they must be pretty satisfied with their performance so far.

Motorola MOTOZINE ZN5 hands-on

Announced in June, the MOTOZINE ZN5 is a pretty humdrum set, but somehow we're liking it's same-as-most-other-motos-look. The handset feels good in the hand, the screen looks pretty spanky -- even if the keyboard feels cheap and seems like it'll wear your fingers down -- and if you're into simplicity, this is likely a winner. While China was the first country getting this set, it seems we may well see it float its way over here after all. For more pics of more angles, follow the link.

Sony Ericsson announces its first photo frame - IDP-100

Guess we all waited this to happen. After all when you have a full line of camera phones, adding a photo frame seems like a next logical move. Sony Ericsson did just that and few days ago they’ve unveiled their first digital photo frame IDP-100, touting it as the “ideal accessory to your Cyber-Shot phone.”

Images from a mobile phone or digital camera can be transferred to Sony Ericsson’s frame in three ways - using flash memory cards (M2, microSD, or MS Duo are supported), USB cable or via Bluetooth, which is the easiest solution for mobile phone users. The frame is 7-inches wide, shows WVGA resolution (800×480) and also supports auto-rotation. In addition, it is “touch-enabled” and can also act as a world clock, displaying up to three different time zones.

The Sony Ericsson IDP-100 will be available in selected markets in Q4 in dark grey.
