Spyker shows off LaTurby and MonteCarlo at CeBIT

Following on the Dutch automaker's lackluster, branded handset offerings from last year, Spyker is set to roll out two new mobile phones at CeBIT 2008. Known for their highly-styled and intricately detailed supercars, Spyker's initial handset portfolio was slighty disappointing. The latest lineup looks like a decent improvement.

Spyker's new LaTurby is basically a re-branded Haier Sterling and as such will be sporting a 2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, and 1GB internal storage. We have to admit, that shiny metallic casing is real easy on the eyes - even if it looks like a fingerprint/smudge-magnet.



Next up on Spyker's new menu is the Spyker MonteCarlo slider. To keep in line with the Spyker LaTurby's shiny casing, the MonteCarlo slider is an all-metal beauty with a spec-sheet that should read much like the LaTurby.



Pricing and availability are not yet available. But, if you really want a Spyker LaTurby, you might want to check out the Haier Sterling.

Something seems to have happened as Sony Ericsson today removed the Windows short cut key on the front of the X1 photos. If you compare photos of the phone before and the phone photos today, you'll notice that the key is now blank. Check the detail here:



It seems like all photos with the exception of the press photos have been edited. I'll try to get a comment on this. Check out the XPERIA mini-site to see for yourself!

N95 bests iPhone in mobile browsing stats by 6 to 1?

Showing that you really can't believe every stat you read without knowing the exact context, and remembering the attention some USA mobile browsing stats got when they announced that Apple iPhone browser use trumped that of any other device, I was interested to see stats from respected UK computer magazine/web site PC Pro, showing the top 5 mobile devices that had accessed their servers in 2008 so far. Read on....

The figures, published in the May 2008 issue of PC Pro, showed:

1. PSP - 23.7%

2. Nokia N95 - 20.2%

3. iPAQ HX series - 20.1%

4. Palm TX - 3.6%

5. Apple iPhone - 3.4%

 

Which, for a UK tech web site I can quite believe. And which makes a nice corollorary to the conclusions drawn after the US browsing statistics.

And note that the above iPhone figure is despite users getting flat rate data built into their contract. I guess it shows that in the UK, at least, the majority of smart mobile device users either use Wi-Fi or have flat mobile data rates as well.

Statistics, eh? Who'd trust them? My take is that they're always interesting but should always 'be taken with a pinch of salt'!

Mooon+ Concept Cell Phone



The Mooon+ concept cell phone is different from what we've seen this far due to the fact that the mouthpiece can be detached from the handset itself, turning into an automatic Bluetooth headset as and when you need it. Other features include a lovely touch screen display and a built-in digital camera, all crammed into a sexy body accentuated with metal at strategic places. I suppose you charge this by attaching it to the handset itself while the latter is being charged.

Motorola to unveil a slew of new handsets at CTIA?



It's been a rough couple months for Motorola's handset division -- rumors of a sale, two high-profile executive departures, layoffs, and that pathetic showing at Mobile World Congress -- but today it looks like the company might have some tricks left up its sleeve for CTIA. We're not sure where it came from, but this supposed marketing video popped up on YouTube with shots of several new handsets, all of which jive with rumors we've heard about Moto's upcoming devices, like the Linux-based Ming 2   and the 5 megapixel cameraphone developed with Kodak (pictured above). Other notables are a Q variant running Windows Mobile 6.1 and an odd new music slider that could be the ROKR E10. Of course, none of this is official (and Moto did release a hype-laden video just before MWC only to fall totally flat), but we'd be lying if we said we weren't hoping to see Moto try and come back around at CTIA -- we'll see what happens.

Key Chain Solar Charger



The key Chain solar charger is meant to slow down the drain of your battery, but if you’re patient enough, you might be able to charge it, although I guess that it would take a few days for a full charge (if the phone is turned off).

The manufacturer had some kind of marketing gimmick around “being green”, but that’s crap: more carbon will be generated by creating, shipping and disposing of this device than it will ever save. Price: $22

User Data Preservation na 6120

Jedan član foruma na howardforums.com je objavio da je uspešno updateovao verziju firmvera na svom 6120 na novu verziju 4.21. Ono što je još zanimljivije je da su, kako kaže, svi podaci ostali netaknuti, što znači da je Nokia uvela User Data Preservation (UDP) i na 6120. Još uvek nije poznato šta još donosi nova verzija firmvera.

Ovo je jako dobra vest, i nadam se da će Nokia vrlo brzo uvesti ovaj sistem u firmvere svih ostalih Symbian s60v3 uređaja.

More details (and pics) of Verizon's Samsung Glyde U940

Verizon's iPhone-fighting Samsung F700 Croix handset has already passed through the FCC as the US-friendly Samsung U940 on its way to pull duty as the Croix interface-toting, (pseudo)haptic feedback using, CDMA qwerty-slider with a touchscreen display. And we've got more details and pics on the highly anticipated touchscreen device from Samsung.

Verizon should be picking up the Samsung U940 as the Samsung Glyde, and we're seeing that it will thankfully be rocking a true-blue web browser with full HTML support. The 5 megapixel camera that we saw in the Samsung F700 Croix will probably make it to the Samsung Glyde, but only time will tell if that's on point.



With Verizon already offering the LG Voyager as an attempt to lure potential iPhone buyers to the CDMA-side of things, the Samsung Glyde could give LG Voyager owners a bit of buyer's remorse. The Samsung Glyde definitely looks sleeker than the LG Voyager - sorry, Voyager owners.



I've had my hands on a Samsung F700 Croix and the Samsung F490 with the Croix interface, and both handsets are amazing. The Samsung F700 (the Samsung U940 is the US version of the F700) sports a great display (even if it is pressure-sensitive) and comfortable qwerty keyboard. Unfortunately, that annoying pseudo-haptic feedback is annoying. I don't want to entire device to vibrate every time I touch the screen.
