There is no doubt that Mobile World Congress 2008 is more important than ever for all players in the mobile value chain to stay on top of what’s happening in this rapidly evolving industry.

It is also interesting that congress is under re-branding this year, I guess it is mainly because traditional 3G and GSM technology is a bit outdated nowadays and from now 3GMS will be known the Mobile World Congress and MWC will be used instead of the oldie 3GSM name.

Anyway, beside all new technologies that will be introduced there and tons of press releases and various different material that we’ll get during the congress Symbian is certainly main subject of our interest. According to latest rumours we can expect to see one or two new Symbian S60 phones and at least one of them will be powered by the feature pack 2.

Everything about Nokia N96 is already very well known, Nokia has failed to surprise us this time, we got the few quality photos some time ago and awkward webmaster over the German Nokia website has accidentally leaked the full phone specifications.

From other hand the Nokia N78 is the still mystery, nothing more than rumour and it isn’t confirmed that we’ll see it there actually although some specifications spreading around last few moths. It is rumoured to be some kind of the cheap candybar, Nokia N73 replacement, it will be S60 3rd edition FP2 phone with 3.2 MPX camera and based on the free Scale platform powered with 369MHz processor just like the Nokia 6120 for example.

Also there has been a lot of buzz around the Nokia touch UI and some people claims that Nokia will demonstrate the 5th generation of the S60 platform on few demo devices instead of showing the already very well known and boring PowerPoint demonstrations.

Apart from Nokia, LG will probably reveal a new GPS-enabled smartphone, the LG-KT610 based on the Symbian and licenced Nokia's S60 platform.

It's a candybar handset running the Symbian operating system, with a flip-out QWERTY keyboard and HSDPA connectivity. Sounds as the dedicated Business oriented phone and with addition of the GPS and very well known LG's build quality it going to be huge competition to Nokia Eseries family. Just hope it will be not ends as the LG's KS10 introudced last year at 3GSM or LG's JoY announced at Symbian Smartphone Show more than a year ago.

MWC '08: LG KT610 - It's officially? VGA, GPS, QWERTY!!

This morning I wrote about the upcoming World Mobile Congress and rumours about possible announcements and apparently it seems that my predictions were right.

Can't find photos or detailed specifications at the moment and the only source of the information is the short Symbian's press release.

Motorola not leaving handset business

For those dedicated Motorola fans out there, wondering if they indeed will pull out of the mobile phone handset business, can now breathe a sigh of relief, as yesterday, they said they are “fully committed” to the mobile phone handset business, and their strategic review hopes to bring about a “product-led” recovery, for the loss-making handset division.

The rumours of Motorola exiting the handset division ran amok in late January, when the US-based phone giant said it was contemplating splitting its mobile devices from its other businesses, as part of a "structural and strategic realignment", in order to re-establish itself, to re-claim its lost marketshare.

Its fairly obvious that Motorola has lost marketshare to the likes of Nokia, Samsung, and Sony Ericsson, Motorola failed to capitalise on its once-dominant RAZR phone. Don McLellan, Motorola's senior vice president for corporate development and strategy, had some interesting input: "The market had dramatically undervalued mobile devices. That was a concern to us, McLellan said in an interview, adding, "We know it can regain market leadership” This is yet another clear sign that Motorola really are committed to once again dominate the handset business, with its fresh ideas. McLellan said Motorola's focus was on its mobile devices unit, as other businesses were doing "extraordinarily well."

To further add to the reassurance of Motorola not opting out, Motorola CEO Greg Brown had this to say, at the Mobile World Congress, in Barcelona: “I don't want there to be any confusion,"  "Motorola is fully committed to the mobile devices business and I am fully committed to mobile devices."

77.3 million Symbian-powered smartphones shipped in 2007  

Today, Symbian released the financial statement and operational figures for the fourth quarter, and the full year, which ended on 30th December 2007. Symbian announced that 77.3 million  smartphones shipped in the year of 2007 - this number was a significant (50%) increase on the number of Symbian smartphones shipped in the year of 2006.

Also of note, is that 8,736 third-party Symbian applications are now commercially available, this is a 27% increase on the end of December 2006, 6,896 applications were available at that time. A total of 68 mobile phones, which are based on the Symbian OS commenced shipment in the year of 2007, through 250 major network operators, by a number of 8 licensees, which include Fujitsu, LG, Mitsubishi, Motorola, Nokia, Samsung, Sharp, and Sony Ericsson. This is a 4.6% increase on 2006 (65 models).

"YahooPhone" and "YPhone" trademarks filed for... by Hop-on?



We've heard a lot of talk from Hop-on, makers of all those cheap cellphones that never seem to go anywhere, but the company may have bitten off a little more than it can chew with its latest trademark registration filings for "YahooPhone" and "YPhone." Yep, that's right -- those names bring to mind any massive consumer-oriented companies that might not be happy? Oh, right. There's been some speculation that Hop-on is actually developing a phone for Yahoo!, since it has some deals in place with AT&T and Verizon, but it's pretty unlikely the company is also in charge of branding to the point where it's registering trademarks. No, our guess is that someone's hoping that the folks up in Sunnyvale are a little too distracted by the clumsy advances of one Mr. Ballmer to keep track of a little thing like potentially infringing trademark registrations -- yeah, we don't think that's going to work out so well for you, guys.

Spyker iPhone Clone



Could the Spyker be the European version of the iPhone clone? Well, the possibility is definitely there - just take a good look at the photo above and you'll probably think it shares the same father as the iPhone. Paraded at MWC '08, the Spyker does not come with a full touch screen display though, replacing a small section of it with a physical keypad instead. Other than viewing it through a glass case, very little is known about the specifications of the Spyker.
