U eri kada mobilnim telefonima vladaju Symbian i Windows operativni sistemi pojava novog igrača na tržištu unosi posebnu draž.

Kompanije NXP Semiconductors i Purple Labs najavile su konceptualno zanimljiv mobilni telefon koji će raditi pod Linux mobilnim okruženjem.

Telefon će biti potpuno funkcionalan, sa svim opcijama kao što je video telefoniranje, reprodukcija muzike i video sadržaja, brzo pretraživanje interneta... A što je najzanimljivije proizvodjači tvrde da će cena telefona biti ispod 100 američkih dolara.

Purple Magic telefon donosi potpunu 3G podršku, ali pored toga i napredniju 3,5G multimedijalnu platformu. Ove dve mreže podržava ARM926 procesorsko jezgro, a Linux operativni sistem podržava i UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) tehnologiju, koja je jedan od standarda u prenosu podataka. Purple Magic telefon poseduje sve preduslove i za nadgradnju na neke buduće aplikacije i servise operatora mobilnih uredjaja.

The State of the Smartphone Market

Ah yes, I always leap upon new official figures from Canalys - kind of like tuning into radio chart shows to find out which song is 'number 1'. 118 million smartphones were sold across the world in 2007, but who were the winners and losers? Read on to find out.

Of the annual figures, Nokia shipped over 60 million of the 118 million total, with just over half the market, with RIM in second place on 12 million, with noone else (including HTC, Motorola and Sony Ericsson) even getting close. In terms of OS, Symbian OS powered 67% of all smartphones sold during the year, with Microsoft's Windows Mobile on 13% and RIM's Blackberry on 10%.

Looking more specifically at the stats from Q4:



I can see that the smartphone market is still growing very healthily, as expected, 72% year on year, I'd expect to be near the 200 million smartphones sold in 2008 mark in 11 months time. Nokia's market share has held pretty steady too, showing that S60 and Symbian OS are still working out very well for them(!)

Apple, perhaps not surprisingly, made a strong entrance to the worldwide market at the end of last year. To get to 6% so quickly (and with a single product) is an impressive achievement. RIM's OS continues to improve at a rate of knots (see my Smartphones Show Blackberry slots, for example) and it continues to be a surprise how fragmented the Windows Mobile world is, in terms of manufacturer success. Plus, even in their home territory of North America, Microsoft is now down to 3rd place in terms of their mobile platform (after RIM and Apple). If Microsoft don't pull a cat out of the bag very, very soon then their in big trouble.

Also disappointing is Sony Ericsson's market share for their UIQ 3 smartphones. Even in the EMEA region, they ranked below number 5, with less than 2 million device shipments during the quarter.

Microsoft urges Nokia to offer Windows Mobile devices!??

Software giant Microsoft is in discussion with Finnish mobile phone giant about plans to have the handset maker add Windows Mobile-powered devices to its portfolio? What does it means for Symbian?

We know that all Nokia smartphones currently run the Symbian operating system and such a move would be a major change for the industry leader.

Actually Nokia is the major shareholder in Symbian, whose operating system it uses for its Series 60 mobile platform and I really doubt that Nokia will switch that easy to another platform, at least I hope because I really don't like windows powered mobile phones.

Microsoft’s mobile communications business international marketing director John Starkweather confirmed talks were taking place with Nokia but would not confirm when any announcement would be made.

“They obviously have significant investments in Symbian but there are a lot of places where we have significant synergies and we would love to see the day where those synergies would extend completely with Windows Mobile,” he told IT Wire.

While Nokia phones don’t yet have a Windows OS, they do use a range of other Microsoft software. This includes ActiveSynch for connecting to Exchange Servers and the PlayReady DRM technology used to protect purchased music and video content.

Krusell - Top-10 Selling Phones in January 2008

The Swedish manufacturer of carrying cases for portable electronics, Krusell, has released their "Top 10"-list for January 2008. The list is based upon the number of pieces of model specific mobile and smart phone cases that have been ordered from Krusell during January 2008. Krusell's list is unique due to the fact that it reflects the sales of phones on six continents and in more than 50 countries around the globe.

"Nokia 6300 is number one at Krusell’s Top 10 list for the 2nd consequent month. Six out of ten phones on the list are Nokia which reflects their strong position on the market. "Firstly, iPhone buyers are eager to equip their device with a well designed case, and secondly Krusell has gained market shares in North America over the past period, since iPhone is not so widely spread in Europe yet," he ends.
