Microsoft releases first iPhone application, Seadragon

After making some rumblings this past March, Microsoft has now officially joined the iPhone development community with Seadragon Mobile, a free app that lets you "infinite zoom" gigapixel-sized images. Although Seadragon is a Silverlight application on the desktop, Microsoft isn't bringing Silverlight to the iPhone, so don't get your hopes up -- this is probably just some AJAX magic. We're itching to see if the company has any more apps in the pipeline -- wish for an Office editor but expect a Minesweeper variant.

iPhone Nano leaked once again, in slightly more detail this time

I could go on and on today to you about how Apple is wrong for ignoring the low-end market and why they should be producing a smaller, cheaper version of the iPhone that will be the iPhone nano, but what’s the use? I don’t see any, especially now that these beautiful cases of a purported, already-in-production, upcoming iPhone nano have been generously leaked. No, sir.

Apple’s past patent filings tell us a lot about what’s in store for the company’s future. But nothing tickles the fancy of fanboys greater than the real deal. And these photos, I feel, are as close to the real deal as any Apple fanboy can get. For now, at least.

The original iPhone nano patent showed us fairly old-fashioned ways of input, but apparently, Apple’s final production model will feature the same multi-touch enabled display that graces the faces of the first iPhone, iPod Touch and iPhone 3G.

Of course, all of the aforementioned information can only be true if the leaked photo of a supposed silicon casing I’ve embedded above turns out to be true. Which we’ll find out, supposedly, by the time Macworld 2009 officially begins.

From these designs, we gather that the iPhone nano will sport a display that’s probably a half-inch less than that of the iPhone 3G. It’s said to be as tall as the current 4th-generation iPod nano, but significantly wider and thicker, with the same contours as the iPhone.

There’s no telling where we’re headed with these leaked iPhone nano casing photos, but one thing’s for sure. It’s a device Apple should really set their sights on. Perhaps they’re already making one, perhaps not. But if more such things as these leaked photos get out, then this rumor will be intensified all the more.

3G iPhone dolazi u Srbiju, Crnu Goru i Makedoniju?

iPhone Doom with TV-out: Try it yourself

At Ars, nothing quite says geek like a mashup of old-style Apple and newfangled tech. Consider the following picture. Here, you see first-person shooter game Doom running on an iPhone while exporting its video to an authentically-retro Apple II monitor.

Over the weekend, iPhone developer Steven Troughton-Smith saw my iPhone Video Out write-up and decided to update his iPhone port of Doom to take advantage of the iPhone's undocumented TV-out features. This version of Doom, which uses those TV-out enhancements, has been connected to an "authentic monochrome Apple II monitor." Doom is producing a live video feed that is displayed on the Apple II's well-loved screen.

Unlike my early tests, Troughton-Smith implemented a full touch-based interface for his game. Check out the tethered iPhone in front of the Apple II monitor. On its screen, you can see the basic GUI for the game. The buttons shown control movement and weapons. These buttons are large and easy to locate and touch, even while using a secondary screen for gameplay.

At this time, Troughton-Smith has no fixed plans for adding TV-out to the public Doom build, although he says that he's open to investigating the possibility. As for why he chose to use an Apple II monitor rather than a high-end HDTV? He says, "this is what passes for 'fun' around me." Infinite Loop approves and gives his picture two (II) classic thumbs up.
Try it yourself

If you've gotten excited about this iPhone/TV-out stuff, you can give it a try. Troughton-Smith has released the Doom source as an open source Google Code repository. Here's what you need to do to put Doom on your iPhone, assuming you're a registered ($99/year) iPhone developer:

   1. Check out the latest svn repository from Google Code: svn checkout
Kod:
http://iphonedoom.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/
iphonedoom-read-only
   2. Locate the Xcode MobileDoom.xcodeproj in the iphonedoom-read-only folder. Right-click (control-click it) and choose Show Package Contents.
   3. Copy the steven.pbxuser file and rename it as your normal Xcode user name. In my case, that's ericasadun.pbxuser. Your name will obviously vary.
   4. Download a copy of the Doom levels file, doom1.wad. I found a copy at MIT. I am not sure what the copyright/intellectual property of this material is, so use your best judgment. Add the .wad file to the project folder.
   5. Launch Xcode and open the MobileDoom.xcodeproj file.
   6. Open DoomAppDelegate.m and add a one-line definition to the top of the file to enable TV-out.

            #define    ENABLE_TV_OUT      1

   7. In the Project Window, locate Groups & Files > Targets > MobileDoom and double click it. This opens up the Target Info window.
   8. In the Target Info window, click the Properties tab and update the Identfier to match your Apple signing identity. In my case, that was com.sadun.${PRODUCT_NAME}.
   9. Open the Build tab and update your Code Signing Identity, typically iPhone Developer: Your Name.
  10. In the Build tab, find Other C Flags. Set them to -DNORMALUNIX -DUSE_SOUND.
  11. Clean any previous builds, compile and deploy to your device.

Make sure you have connected your iPhone to a television using an Apple-branded cable. Then run the program and enjoy playing Doom.

Digital Chocolate goes iPhone

I’m not sure why it took so much time for Digital Chocolate to “go iPhone,” but they are here now, and we guess they’ll bring many of their titles to the iPhone and iPod Touch users in the near future.

At the moment of this writing, two of their games have hit the AppStore - Chocolate Shop Frenzy and Crazy Penguin Catapult. What’s interesting, though, is that each one of the games mentioned is available in both free and paid “form” — something we’ve already seen done by EA and their Spore Origins title. The lack of trial version support of Apple’s AppStore is sure to blame for this.

I’ll stop here. It’s good to see that one more important mobile games publisher is going iPhone.

iPhone Dev Team Launching iPhone 3G Unlock Software on New Year’s Eve

The sneaky/stealthy/ultra-popular iPhone Dev Team have announced that their long-awaited and highly anticipated software unlock for the iPhone 3G is coming soon… By New Year’s Eve in fact! I suspect they’re working out some minor bugs at this point, and are cranking up the buzz machine for a big launch on the last day of the year.

The Dev Team will be packaging the software in an ultra-easy format… which will make it incredibly idiot-proof and simple to use. When I think of simple to use unlocking apps I always look back to good ol ZiPhone for the 2G iPhone… Hook up your device, open the app, select your options, click the button… and GO! I’m expecting the same ease of use with this one.

The unlock will be available to all iPhone 3G’s running v2.11.07 or earlier. If you’ve already updated your iPhone to v2.2… Looks like you’ll have to wait a bit longer for an unlock. How long? Can’t tell ya that, but you can bet someone will be working on it.
