NVIDIA Glowball Demo Shows Off More Tegra 3 "Kal-El" Capabilities



Madfinger Games recently released a little preview of what Android games could end up looking like when running on the upcoming NVIDIA Tegra 3 "Kal-El" quad-core platform. Color us impressed, but still shots can only go so far in giving us a sense of the processing power of a system running a 3D-game; we need some videos. NVIDIA's got us covered, releasing its own demo showing a game in-action on a Tegra 3 system.

The Android in this case is a Honeycomb tablet, as the first commercial Tegra-3-based systems will be, before the chip makes it to smartphones later in the year. This Glowball demo touches upon several aspects of the power afforded by the Tegra 3 SoC; new dynamic lighting effects are possible, as well as model-based collision detection and deformation. While these aren't necessarily unique to the Tegra 3, the demo shows what happens when you try to pull them off with two of the system's four cores disabled, reducing the demo to a stuttering, jerky mess.

NVIDIA promises that the final Tegra 3 hardware will be even faster than what we see here, with a 25%-30% performance gain. Look for the first Tegra 3 devices to arrive this summer, along with NVIDIA's release of Glowball to the Android Market.

Android Market's most popular emulators disappear without a trace




If you're an Android gamer, chances are you've heard of Nesoid, Snesoid, Gensoid, N64oid, Ataroid, Gearoid and Gameboid: they're all video game console emulators developed by yongzh, and many ranked among the most popular paid apps on the Android Market. This week, they've got something else in common, too -- they've all been abruptly removed. Following a complaint from Sega, two emulators were nixed late last month, but we're hearing that Google has since revoked yongzh's developer privileges, just like PSX4Droid comrade-in-arms ZodTTD. We're currently reaching out to both yongzh and Google for comment, and hope to hear back soon, but it's looking like a bleak week for the emulation community.

Update: We got in touch with yongzh (or Yong Zhang, as he's known in real life) to discuss the matter, and he confirms that his developer account has been removed and his apps pulled without warning -- cutting off his primary source of income and leaving him with an inbox stuffed with worried email from customers. He has, however, already migrated a number of emulators to third-party app store SlideME, where they'll be free for a while, allowing existing customers to get updates without paying a second time, and likely helping a number of new individuals to mooch off his troubles. He's not too optimistic about his prospects at SlideME, though.

Android pulls two dozen virus-infected apps from the Market, over 30,000 users affected




Is Android becoming a virus haven? More and more malware-infected applications appear on the Market raising this question once again after Google removed 58 apps containing viruses in March. Just over the last weekend the company pulled an additional two dozen of them in an attempt to clear its application storefront. Mobile security company Lookout estimates the number of affected users between 30,000 and 120,000.

"This weekend, multiple applications available in the official Android Market were found to contain malware that can compromise a significant amount of personal data. Likely created by the same developers who brought DroidDream to market back in March, more than 25 applications were found to be infected with a stripped down version of DroidDream we're calling 'Droid Dream Light' (DDLight)," the company commented.

A developer tipped Lookout to put them in the know about modified versions of his applications being distributed on the Android Market.

The security company says that the listed application don’t require a manual launch for the virus to become active as it’s invoked on every phone action like a regular voice call. "The broadcast receiver immediately launches the .lightdd.CoreService which contacts remote servers and supplies the IMEI, IMSI, Model, SDK Version and information about installed packages,” the company detailed the security risks. "It appears that the DDLight is also capable of downloading and prompting installation of new packages, though unlike its predecessors it is not capable of doing so without user intervention."

It’s hard to protect yourself from malware on a mobile platform partly because virus-protection is not as wide-spread as on a regular PC, but there are a couple of steps which could help. Downloading apps from trusted sources, checking permissions required by the app, monitoring your phone for abnormal behavior and finally getting an app that would check your downloads for security are some of them.

Andy Rubin: "There are now over 500,000 Android devices activated every day"




Android activations have been a source of pride and joy for Google ever since the platform took off in October 2008, but since then the number has been mushrooming only to now reach the staggering 500,000 activations each day, according to a tweet by Google's own Andy Rubin. Google has now turned on more than 100 million Android devices across the globe and the growth of this number continues.

In December the number of activated Androids every day stood at 300,000, which means that Google has added over 200,000 daily activations for slightly more than half a year. Just over a year ago, daily Android activations stood at 100,000.



And it's not just the number of devices growing, but rather the whole ecosystem as Google's Android Market now stores over 200,000 applications with more than 3 billion downloads, according to data from May 2011. With devices ranging from low to high-end, Android truly has the scale and momentum, but do you expect the growth to continue at the same rate? Samsung plaća Microsoftu za Android


Petnaest dolara po Android uređaju koji izađe iz Samsungove proizvodnje zahtev je koji je Microsoft uputio ovoj kompaniji.



Naknada koju Microsoft traži zapravo je naknada za licencu, jer su neki patenti koje Android koristi u Microsoftovom vlasništvu. HTC već ima dogovor nalik ovom, i plaća Microsoftu naknadu za svaki uređaj na Android platformi.

Samsung, prenosi Rojters, želi da se nagodi sa Microsoftom, i plaća "samo" deset dolara po uređaju, dok bi se za uzvrat obavezao na dublju saradnju sa ovom kompanijom na polju smartfon platformi, kaže neimovani izvor ove agencije.

Kompanija Samsung drugi je najveći proizvođač mobilnih telefona na svetu, a značajan deo njene smartfon ponude zasniva se na Androidu.

Jedan od takvih uređaja, Galaxy S II postao je najbrže prodavani Samsung telefon, sa 3 miliona prodatih primeraka od aprila ove godine.
