A few days ago, Sony Ericsson invited selected press and bloggers to a special meeting about the company, its future and future products and plans. According to Belgique Mobile, Sony Ericsson has been working on “the green wave” and wants to make future products more friendly to the environment. The company showcased three ideas.


Product packaging
The packaging of the 100+ million products Sony Ericsson ships a year is a huge post, that could be improved to reduce the amount of CO2 released. Sony Ericsson has developed a special envelope that - in theory - could replace the original packaging.

Chargers
Another one of the large and rather obvious posts on the “green wave”-plan is the charger. Sony Ericsson has developed a charger that will stop completely when nothing is connected. By pushing the connector into the phone, it’ll start, and when it’s removed, it’ll stop again. It’s an ingenious solution and according to Sony Ericsson, the charger will be generalized soon.

Say goodbye to paper manuals
Sony Ericsson’s last idea is about going away from paper manuals, and instead integrate the manuals into the phone software. The huge advantage here, other than the large amount of trees that can be left standing, is that the manuals can be updated and even integrated into various functions, so you’ve got help available for every single feature on the phone.

Sony Ericsson Rika in red, new leaked images confirm the Walkman phone

Sony Ericsson fans, a red surprise is coming towards you. An unannounced Walkman phone, codenamed Sony Ericsson Rika, has been spotted in the wild, in a good-looking red color. Another silver edition of the handset is said to exist too, and SE might come with even more colors for the new Walkman phone. I can already see fashion-loving mobile users having a hard time deciding which one of them to buy.   

Sony Ericsson Rika is said to be the music-oriented version of G705, the slider announced by the Swedish-Japanese company earlier in September.

The pictures with the red Sony Ericsson Rika have first appeared on the Thai forum of SE Club, but it looks like they have been removed from there. Anyway, here they are: 





The specs of Rika are not known, so besides the fact that it comes with a decent-sized display, a photo camera and a video-call camera, we can’t say too much about it.

Sony Ericsson will probably present the phone in the near future, so we’ll write more about Rika when this happens.

Sony Ericsson might go crazy with a 12 MP camera phone

2008 has brought more 8 Megapixel camera phones than the world has probably expected, but if these are still not enough for you, wait and see what 2009 will come with.

Apparently, Sony Ericsson, the one and only maker of Cyber-shot mobile phones, plans to raise the bar with a 12 Megapixel handset.

This should be the successor of Sony Ericsson C905, codenamed Shiho, which packs an 8.1 MP camera with autofocus, xenon flash and all the other features required for high-quality photography.

MobileMentalism has got tipped off about the new Sony Ericsson 12 megapixel phone codenamed Kokura and says that it’ll be based on TI3240 chipset, Symbian 9.4 S60 OS and will have iPhone like touchscreen interface.

The SEMC blog got some info  about it too and says that 12 Megapixel Sony Ericsson will be released in the second half of 2009. The handset will resemble the C905 in design and specs but it should be thinner.

Well, this is just a rumor for the moment, but Sony Ericsson should have no problems in coming with the said 12 Megapixel phone. Its parent company Sony has lots of high-end digital cameras in its portfolio, hence SE theoretically has access to all the technology and knowledge needed for creating the world’s first 12 MP camera phone.

Guess we’ll find out next year if the Swedish-Japanese joint venture can actually do this.

Sony Ericsson is working on automatic zoom for it’s cameraphones

Sony Ericsson is pretty serious about the picture quality in it’s cameraphones. They were the first to announce 8 megapixel handset this year. And now rumor has it they may be working on a 12 megapixel SE handset for 2009.

But megapixel count is not the only thing that makes the camera in a mobile phone good. The shutter and autofocus speeds, zoom functionality and many other things are no less important. And Sony Ericsson is working to improve these things too.

Their recent patent application shows how Sony Ericsson may go about improving zoom functionality and ease of use in it’s camera phones.



The basic idea is to make zooming automatic by following the handset movement. When you move a camera away from your body, the image zooms in, as you move it back, the image zooms out.

The technology involves accelerometers and proximity sensors to measure the movement of the handset, it’s  distance from your  body and a software to convert the movement values into a zoom parameters.

Nothing really groundbreaking here, but the whole thing looks like a nice touch to improve the overall interface and make the process of taking pictures with cameraphones a more seamless experience.

Sony Ericsson ( C912 ?) Kate appears again, clear shots this time

Sony Ericsson Kate is the rumored codename of a new 5 Megapixel Cybershot phone said to be the successor of K750, the 2 MP candybar released in 2005. The new phone first surfaced on the Web at the end of September, in a few blurry shots that didn’t let us see much of it.

Thanks to a new set of photos from Cell Phone Sail, K750’s successor has appeared again, but this time the available pics are quite good.

The display of Kate seems to have similar touch-sensitive camera keys, like the C902, another 5 MP Cybershot phone that SE released this year. Kate’s display also seems to be slightly larger, which is good news, since the one of C902 only has 2 inches.



The 5 Megapixel camera of Sony Ericsson Kate comes with autofocus and a Xenon flash, so it’s worthy of having the Cybershot branding. This although it might not be as great as the 8 MP camera of C905 - currently the ultimate Cybershot phone.

Apart from the camera, little else is known about the new Kate. Still, HSDPA connectivity is said to be included, on top of the quad-band GSM/EDGE one. The phone apparently lacks GPS and it runs on the same Java platform the C905 does.

As for the official name of the new Cybershot, this might be Sony Ericsson C912. Since it has obvious similarities with the C902, Kate might be seen as its follower and, according to the new naming system of SE, the C912 designation would fit it.

By the way it looks, Sony Ericsson Kate (or whatever its official name will be) might be launched for a decent price. The Unofficial SE Blog, which first came with the Kate dubbing, said the phone could be announced by the end of October, so let’s wait and see if that turns out to be true.
