Siberia ablaze: Raging forest fires engulf five Russian regions



Siberian cities are cloaked in smoke from raging wildfires whipped up by winds. The blazes are raging in five regions, covering an area over 22,200 acres (90 square kilometers).

­The situation is hampered by extreme temperatures. And though all flights in the regional city of Omsk have been grounded by the blaze, firefighters say it poses no threat to populated areas or industry.

Thick smoke is holding back containment work and is preventing the emergency planes and helicopters from reaching the worst-hit areas.

Some 3,000 people, 412 units of fire-fighting equipment and 24 aircraft have been mobilized to fight the blazes.

Around 34 wildfires have been identified. Weather forecasters say hot and dry weather with temperatures of up to 35 degrees Celsius will remain until at least August 5.

Earlier authorities were forced to close two airports in the cities of Tomsk and Omsk, due to heavy smoke and poor visibility.

Ecologists fear this year’s blaze might become real catastrophe

And while the local authorities claim they have the situation under their control, Greenpeace ecologists are convinced that though summer fires have become commonplace in Russia’s Siberia and Far East, this year it is a real catastrophe.

‘If the situation is going to develop like it is doing right now, this year will see a record large area affected by fires,” Greenpeace activist in Russia Maksim Yaroshenko told Radio Svoboda (Russian Branch of Radio Free Europe).

His colleague Grigory Kuksin also is convinced that people are unable to deal with the blaze and only rain could possibly extinguish the fire, even though all of the emergency workers are called in.

The ecologists believe the reasons for the catastrophe lie in the country’s inability to fight wildfires due to calamitous changes in legislation. Forest management has become gravely dilapidated since 2000, when the Federal Forestry Service was liquidated.

A new and highly ineffective Forestry Code introduced in 2006 appeared to be the last straw. It abolished centralized state forest control, distributing its functions among regional authorities. The latter, as a rule, are unable – or unwilling – to allocate enough finance to forestry protection and monitoring.

From 2006 to 2010, the number of forestry employees shrank by half. Now it is unclear who bears responsibility for prevention and battling wildfires.

Russia criticism of Gita absurd, says India minister

Indian Foreign Minister SM Krishna has described as "absurd" a complaint in Russia that the Hindu holy book Bhagvad Gita is an extremist religious text.

Indian MPs have expressed outrage at a court case in Russia that could see the Hindu holy book banned there.

State prosecutors in Tomsk, in Siberia, recently put Bhagvad Gita say the text sows social discord and want its distribution banned.

Russian embassy officials in Delhi said they had great regard for the text.

But SM Krishna told parliament that the complaint was filed by "ignorant people" - the holy book had also been put on a list that includes Hitler's Mein Kampf.

Russia recognises freedom of religion among its four main faiths, Orthodox Christianity, Islam, Buddhism and Judaism.





"The government has taken up the issue with the Russian government and Indian embassy officials are in touch with the officials of the International Society of Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON)," Mr Krishna said.

Earlier on Tuesday, members from the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party expressed outrage over the move in Siberia to ban the holy book.

On Monday, several MPs demanded the government protect Hindu rights.

"We will not tolerate an insult to Lord Krishna," said Laloo Yadav, leader of the Rashtriya Janata Dal party.

Bhartruhari Mahtab, leader of the Biju Janata Dal, said: "I want to know from the government what it is doing. The religious rights of Hindus in Russia should be protected. The government should impress upon the Russian authorities through diplomatic channels."

Russian authorities said they were saddened by the development.

"It is strange that such events are unfolding in the beautiful university city in Siberia, as Tomsk is famous for its secularism and religious tolerance," Alexander M Kadakin, Russian Ambassador in India, said in a statement on Monday night.

"Well, it seems that even the lovely city of Tomsk has its own neighbourhood madmen. It is sad indeed."

He said: "I consider it categorically inadmissible when any holy scripture is taken to the courts. For all believers these texts are sacred."

The case in Tomsk concerns a Russian translation of the Bhagvad Gita by ISKCON.

The book is central to the Hare Krishna movement and dozens of its adherents protested outside the Russian consulate in Calcutta on Monday.

The court in Tomsk on Monday suspended its ruling until 28 December to seek the opinion of the Russian ombudsman and religious experts.

Последњи месец она је порасла три одсто и сада Путина подржава 67 одсто грађана.

Популарност премијера Дмитрија Медведева је знатно мања и њега подржава 23 одсто. Истовремено рад владе подржава 59 одсто грађана, показује истраживање московског ”Левада центра”.

После Путина и Медведева, најпопуларнији руски политичар сада је Сергеј Шојгу, нови губернатор Московске области.

Лидера комуниста Генадија Зјуганова подржава 11 одсто руских грађана. За њима следи контроверзни политичар Владимир Жириновски, лидер Либерално-демократске партије. На шестом месту је милијардер и биши председнички кандидат Михаил Прохоров. Одмах за њим је министар спољних послова Сергеј Лавров, а на осмом месту је лидер Праведне Русије, бивши спикер Савета федерације Русије, Сергеј Миронов. На деветом месту популарности у Русији је патријарх Руске православне цркве Кирил, а на десетом нови спикер Савета федерације Валентина Матвијенко, која је пре тога била губернатор Санкт Петербурга.

Ако се упореде спискови популарности са онима из минулих година, лако се може приметити да је ново лице милијардер Прохоров, а сви остали су ”староседеоци”. Од министара је сада на листи једино Сергеј Лавров, дугогодишњи шеф дипломатије. Иако су многи предвиђали да ће Сергеј Миронов потонути после сукоба са руководством у Кремљу, време је показало је он респектабилан самосталан политичар.

Ни оркестрирани напади на патријарха Руске православне цркве нису смањили његову популарност, па је он и даље међу десет најпопуларнијих. Иначе, 18 одсто грађана не верује ниједном руском политичару.

Руски премијер Дмитриј Медведев би желео да се поново врати у Кремљ. Он је британским новинарима за време боравка у Лондону рекао да не искључује могућност да се поново кандидује за председника ако буде имао подршку народа.

„Ако досадим народу, и он ми каже ‘довиђења’, почећу да пишем мемоаре“, рекао је Медведев.

Москва је изјавила намеру да лансира неколико британских сателита. Постоје и планови о постављању ГЛОНАСС-а у Енглеској, „што ће побољшати сигнал у Европи“. О томе је изјавио председник Русије Владимир Путин за време своје кратке радне посете Лондону.

Русија и Велика Британија сада раде на читавом низу космичких пројеката, а такође на могућности војно-техничке сарадње, рекао је Путин. Он је такође поставио задатак увећања робне размене две земље 2,5 пута. Сада се она процењује на 21 милијарду америчких долара.

Muslim sect holds children underground for decade



Led by a self-proclaimed prophet, more than 70 members of a reclusive Muslim sect, including 20 children, have spent a decade in an eight-level catacomb in Russia’s Tatarstan without access to education, healthcare or even daylight.

Its founder, 83-year-old Faizrakhman Satarov, who claims he is the last Muslim prophet, ordered his followers to live in catacombs they had dug under his estate in the suburbs of the city of Kazan.

There they lived, completely isolated from the outside world, in insanitary cells without light, heat or ventilation. The investigators have reportedly found extremist books in the compound.

The authorities had to remove 19 under-age children and temporarily place them in care as conditions in the bunker were unsuitable for living in. The children, aged between one and 17, had never left Satarov’s estate. Some of them were born underground and have never even seen daylight.

The children have been examined by a number of medics who found the health condition of the “underworld” children satisfactory, saying they were properly nourished, but very dirty. The final medical assessment also required a full set of samples for analysis be taken from the children.

Russia’s Children’s Ombudsman, Pavel Astakhov, said that their parents will have to undergo special treatment before they can be reunited with their children. “Unfortunately the rehabilitation of sect victims takes a long time and requires the participation of professionals. Parents who are members of the sect first have to undergo proper treatment and only after that may be allowed back to their children,” he told RIA Novosti.

Self-proclaimed prophet Satarov has been charged with negligence and warned that if he does not end his extremist activities, the sect will be outlawed. He had forbidden his followers, who called themselves “muammin," from the Arabic for "believers," from receiving any medical assistance and children were not allowed to attend schools. Thus, the leader of the sect had denied them their constitutional rights, Irina Petrova, assistant to the state attorney, told RIA Novosti.

Satarov used to be a top cleric in the neighboring region of Bashkiria. However in the 1990s he proclaimed himself a prophet and founded the sect, an act that that goes against the principles of Islam, as it recognizes only the Prophet Muhammad.

Sect members do not recognize the state or laws and do not leave the territory of their compound. They are only allowed to read the Koran and Satarov’s preachings.

“They have decided to eliminate our community, decided to wage war against Allah. They won’t defeat Allah,” one of the sect’s members told Vesti news channel.

The sect has been discovered by authorities, who were investigating the assassination of Tatarstan’s top Muslim cleric, a staunch critic of radical forms of Islam.

Zaljubljeni bik i krava u Irkutskoj oblasti, u Sibiru, popeli su se na peti sprat jedne stambene zgrade, ne bi li se posvetili produžetku vrste.

Kako se navodi na sajtu Čunskog rejona, njihova ljubav je bila toliko glasna i zastrašujuća, da su stanari pozvali snage Ministarstva za vanredne situacije.
 
U Irkustkoj oblasti to je prvi put da se tako ponaša rogata stoka, ali su spasioci izašli na kraj, iako nije njihova dužnost da oslobađaju ulaze.
 
Hvatanje krave i bika prošlo je glatko: spasioci su spremili laso od konopca, i, kada je kravi popustila pažnja, zabacili joj laso na rogove i poveli je niz stepenice.
 
“Bik se muvao-muvao, a onda i on pošao za kravom”, saopštila je lokalna vlast.
