Toshiba TG01 - another reason why Windows Mobile is not dying

To the consternation of onlookers, companies continue to release extremely desirable devices using the Windows Mobile platform. The latest entrant is Toshiba. Of course they are no stranger to Windows Mobile devices, but this would be the first device which addresses the style question so directly.

The Toshiba TG01 is a super-slim 9.9mm (about the thickness of an iPod Touch), device with an extremely large 4.1 inch WVGA resistive screen. It features the same minimalist look of the HTC Touch HD, but sports even fewer actual buttons, but features a virtual trackpad.

Behind the pretty facade however the TG01 is actually a beast, being the fist announced device with Qualcomm’s 1GHz Snapdragon QSD2850 chipset with dynamic speed control to ensure good battery life. This apparently allows the device to run Windows Mobile 6.1 pretty snappily, not to mention apparently run full Flash without any issue at all. It also features Toshiba’s own 3D user interface, which features vertical blinds and swiping gestures. Phone calls can be answered by shaking the phone, and the accelerometer can also be used to rotate the screen.

The device has otherwise the standard Windows Mobile feature set, meaning HSDPA, WIFI, GPS, microSD memory expansion.

The smartphone should come to Europe some time in Q3 2009, but may be exclusive to some carriers. Pricing should be similar to the Touch HD. More details will be available at Mobile World Congress.

Acer Relaunching Eten DX900 Dual-Sim Phone

Remember the DX900 Eten unveiled last June back in Computex 2008? Well, the exact same device will make an appearance once more, at this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in a couple of weeks. According to the French site Mobinaute, Acer who bought ETEN last September will unveil new Windows Mobile devices, including a rebranded version of the Eten DX900.

Nothing new is expected in terms of features or design except a slightly different colour range. Dual SIM, 2.8” VGA screen,  an SiRF Star III GPS chip, 3 mega pixels camera and Windows Mobile 6.1 are all expected on the new-but-not-really Acer device.

The Eten DX900 was already available in some markets, but you should now expect Acer to take full advantage of its huge distribution channels and ship the device globally.

We only hope that Acer will unveil as they promised, “even” better smartphones,  because we can’t really see how the almost one year old DX900 could be any real competition to any of the expected HTC devices for the 2009.

New Gigabyte smartphone coming - the year of WVGA?

Gigabyte has announced that they will launching a new smartphone at Mobile World Congress, and has included this picture with their promotional material.

The picture clearly depicts new smartphone with the characteristic screen aspect ratio of a WVGA or WQVGA smartphone, and with Gigabyte already having done a number of VGA devices, WVGA is very likely.

The phone shares the same aesthetic as all black slabs these days, with minimal buttons and what looks like a trackball. The device also features a front-facing camera, indicating its almost certainly a 3G device.

Toshiba TG01 GUI, video playback demoed on film

We just saw Toshiba's newest, Snapdragon boasting, offering -- the TG01 -- bust onto the scene, and now we're catching some demo action, too. We're not really expecting to get any alone time with the device until it's unveiled at MWC in Barcelona, so Slashgear's impressions will have to do for now. They seem pretty satisfied overall with the GUI, are "not convinced" about the device's resistive touchscreen's (and lack of buttons) potential for gaming, but the 1GHz CPU and 800 x 400 display seem to impress. The screen looks pretty frustrating to use, but check the GUI video demo after the break for yourself, and hit the read link for two other, in-depth peeks.

Toshiba TG01 - a 4.1 inch WVGA touchscreen display and only 9.9mm thick

When you say Toshiba, you think about Japan. And when you think about Japan, in terms of mobile technology, it’s probably high-res displays that first come into your mind.

Well, Toshiba TG01, the latest handset unveiled by the Japanese company, apparently has the largest display in the history of mobile phones: a 4.1 inch one, with a WVGA (800 x 480 pixels) resolution.

The TG01 was presented today, during an event held in London. Pocket-lint has a set of images with the handset, which show it to be among the thinnest touchscreen devices ever, as it measures only 9.9 mm in thickness.

Even more, the TG01 comes with other advanced features, including HSDPA connectivity, GPS, DivX support and a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset that runs at 1GHz. The OS is Windows Mobile 6.1, improved with Toshiba’s own Tosh 3D interface.

There’s no word about the handset’s camera yet, so we don’t know its Megapixel count (but it’s probably a high one).

As Toshiba puts it, the new TG01 is set to “revolutionize the mobile entertainment world”, and, with those specs, I think it can to that indeed.

(TG01 vs. BlackBerry Bold)

We will probably see the Toshiba TG01 at MWC 2009, when exact details about its availability and price might also be unveiled.

Garmin joins forces with Asus - new handsets to sport Windows Mobile

Asus and Garmin has just announced they have upgraded their relationship from client and ODM to partner status, and will be working together closely on Garmin’s Nuvifone and also a series of upcoming devices, all branded under the Garmin-Asus label. Sources close the the company report that while the Nuvifone will not feature Windows Mobile, all the devices after will.

The new Windows Mobile devices will feature Asus’s custom overlay, which will apparently be the most advanced on the market, and integrate seamlessly and deeply with the underlying OS.

Three devices are planned from the partnership for 2009, the first being the Nuvifone G60 which will be based on Garmin’s proprietary OS and will not come to Europe, the other two Windows Mobile devices will have wider distribution.

In Garmin’s earlier press release they said:

    LBS functionality is core to the Garmin-Asus nüvifone series, which will offer the same turn-by-turn, voice-prompted navigation features found on high-end Garmin portable navigation devices (PND). It has preloaded maps and millions of points of interest that allow drivers to quickly find a specific street address, establishment’s name or search for a destination by category. In addition, the nüvifone includes quick access to online points of interest through internet enabled local search. The nüvifone harnesses the power of the worldwide web and information about local merchants and attractions is continually updated. The nüvifone also features Ciao!™, a social networking application that bridges the gap between multiple location based social networks and integrates them seamlessly into one device.

It appears Asus will be giving up on their own smartphone roapmap with this joint venture, and after releasing a smartphone code-named the Glaxy5 they will not be releasing any further devices under their own brand.

In general this announcement is good news for the Garmin Nuvifone platform, as buying a handset just for GPS functionality does seem a bit of a niche market, while a multi-function handset running a good-selling OS is much more likely to succeed.

Remember that Samsung C6620 that was exclusively launched by TIM in Italy? Well, it looks like there’s a slightly different version of it, called Samsung C6625 and sold unlocked.

The C6625 was spotted at Expansys, where you can pre-order it for £249.99 (around $360).

Running on Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard, Samsung C6625 is kind of like a Samsung BlackJack, but it has a more rounded overall look. Its full QWERTY keyboard will surely appeal to business users, who are, in fact, the smartphone’s main target.

Here are the main features and specs of C6625:

    * 2.6 inch non-touchscreen display with 320 x 240 pixels
    * Tri-band GSM connectivity (900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz connectivity)
    * HSDPA 2100 MHz  connectivity
    * A-GPS
    * Stereo FM radio with RDS
    * Stereo Bluetooth
    * 2MP camera with video recording
    * 100MB of on-board memory
    * MicroSDHC card support
    * Talk time: up to 420 minutes
    * Standby time: up to 300 hours
    * 113.6 x 63 x 11.6 mm
    * 107.7 grams

No word yet on when the new Samsung will become available, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s soon outed across Europe.
