First Garmin-Asus Windows Mobile Nuvifone pictured

In a seemingly unseemly haste to relegate the Garmin Nuvifone G60 to obsolescence, Garmin-Asus will be showing of the Windows Mobile version of the product called the Nuvifone M20 at Mobile World Congress.

The Windows Mobile 6.1 phone will offer the usual complement of 3G, WIFI and off course GPS, and is said also to have a 3 megapixel camera (with geo-tagging) and a “desktop-like Internet browser that allows users to pan and zoom with a swipe of a finger” which may be 6-on-6 or another browser like Opera Mobile. The nüvifone M20 has a 2.8” TFT touch screen and built-in 4Gb/8Gb My Storage.

Of course the whole point of a Garmin phone us the navigation features and Garmin-Asus says the M20 offers “the most advanced (location-based services) experience of any Windows Mobile phone.”

“Navigation functions are linked to frequently used applications such as calendar, contacts, e-mail, Internet applications and more,” the companies said in a release.

It will also feature Garmin’s Ciao! software that lets users find and navigate to friends from social networks such as Facebook.

Pricing information is expected by June 30.

GIGABYTE Communications is Headed to Barcelona With Multimedia, Business and Style.



Here is a little bit more news on what GIGABYTE Communications plans on bringing to the show at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next week. GBC plans to bring a gang of devices under the categories of Multimedia, Business and Style. Very exciting.

The company has stated that it will be showing off two new devices in the Multimedia category, one of which, the MS820, was reveiled last year, with full disclosure of the device taking place at this years event.

Also on GBC’s itinerary is a new handset with higher specifications, and a PDA device that may just be the multimedia powerhouse some of you have been awaiting, with  DVB-T and/or DVB-H capabilities.

Here is more excerpts of what GIGABYTE will have up it’s sleeve when they arrive in Spain:

“In the Business area, GBC will announce a device that is rather different from what it has unveiled before. The product is stated to come with more functions meant to ensure that the business operation is smoother and more secure.

The GSmart S1200, a device that can be seen in the invitation card next to this article, will be added to the Style category. The S1200 comes with a chic and stylish design, featuring a simple round arc shape and including a special coated texture meant to avoid fingerprints on the handset. The device will run under Windows Mobile Professional 6.1 OS, and is powered by a Qualcomm 7200A (528MHz) processor meant to deliver great performance.”

The S1200 will also be rocking Smart Zone, a new UI developed by GBC, which is reportedly one of the most efficient UI’s available today, allowing the user to access any program in one or two steps. This is known as the ‘Core’ concept. We are now officially intrigued.

Dual-faced Acer DX650 and Acer X960 spotted

We all know that Acer, currently the world’s third largest computer manufacturer, is getting ready to announce new smartphones at MWC 2009.

Well, it looks like the Taiwanese company wasn’t able to keep the upcoming handsets from leaking onto the Web, as two of them have appeared today on the Vietnamese website Tinh Te.

The first one, Acer DX650, is a dual-faced device that runs on Windows Mobile and comes with two displays. Unfortunately, these are nothing to get excited about: a QVGA touchscreen display and a 128 x 96 pixels monochrome one. The side with the small display also has an alphanumeric keyboard:







The features of Acer DX650 apparently include:

    * HSDPA connectivity
    * GPS
    * Wi-Fi
    * Bluetooth

Acer X960, the second leaked smartphone, looks better than the DX650 and it also comes with better specs.









The X960 offers the following:

    * A 2.8 inch VGA (640 x 480 pixels) touchscreen display
    * Windows Mobile
    * HSDPA connectivity
    * GPS
    * Wi-Fi
    * A 3MP camera
    * Bluetooth
    * MicroSD card support
    * 128MB RAM, 256MB ROM
    * 533MHz Samsung processor

There’s no info yet regarding the availability of Acer DX650 and Acer X960, but we’ll probably find out more about the handsets at MWC 2009.

i-mate Legionnaire and i-mate Centurion to come with Windows Mobile 6.5

Apart from unveiling the world’s toughest Windows Mobile 6.1 smartphone (the 810-F), i-mate has also announced two smartphones which will be launched with Windows Mobile 6.5 on-board: i-mate Legionnaire and i-mate Centurion.

The Legionnaire is a full-touchscreen handset that’s scheduled for a Q3 2009 release, together with a UMPC called i-mate Warrior. Apparently, the Legionnaire would fit into the Warrior, act as its touchpad and send info to its large XVGA display.

i-mate Legionnaire will have a retail price of $500, while the Warrior UMPC should come for less – only $199.



i-mate Centurion (picured below) doesn’t have a touchscreen display, but it’s very small (almost like a credit card) and comes with a full QWERTY keyboard.



The Centurion features HSDPA connectivity, internal GPS, Bluetooth and a 2MP camera. It should be available in the second half of 2009, for a retail price of $550.

Asus P835 officially unveiled: WVGA display, 5MP camera and more

Despite the alliance with Garmin, Asus doesn’t give up on announcing its own handsets after all.

The Taiwanese manufacturer has just unveiled the Asus P835, a brand new Windows Mobile 6.1 smartphone that offers a large 3.5 inch touchscreen display with 800 x 480 pixels, plus a set of other nice features. 

In Asus’ own words, the P835 is made “for business-savvy professionals who appreciate a screen as big as their ambitions.”

The new device has a simple design and uses an improved Asus Glide interface, said to be “the most innovative, intuitive and interactive mobile user interface available today”.



The full list of specs and features includes:

    * Quad band GSM/GPRS/EDGE connectivity (850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz)
    * Tri band UMTS/HSPA connectivity (900 / 1900 / 2100 MHz) for downloads up to 7.2 Mbps and uploads up to 2 Mbps

Asus said nothing regarding the price and availability of P835, but we’ll probably see the smartphone in stores in the next couple of months.

Mio Explora K70 GPS phone looks pretty pretty



Mio has  for a while now produced Windows Mobile smartphones with a GPS focus but pretty good eye on design.  The Mio Explora K70 is another device in the same vein, but besides looks this device also has some pretty good specs too.

The 11.9 mm thick  Explora is one of the few devices that are Quadband GSM and Tri-band 3G.  It has a massive 3.5 inch screen, only let down slightly by its 240×400 resolution, and unusually these days also has infra-red connectivity.

The device also comes with a desktop application called Mobile Assistant which helps with device setup and map transfer.
