Asus P552w is pretty compact, comes with 3D UI plus GPS and Wi-Fi



Asus announced their latest WinMo Pro handset - the Asus P552w - a compact device that not only features the latest Asus-grown 3D UI Glide, but also packs a powerful CPU, as well as both GPS and Wi-Fi. This nifty device seems to have almost all goodies you could wish for, except for a capable camera (just as an Apple handset we've heard about - called the iPhone or something).

Named after a supersonic fighter jet plane, Asus P552w is powered by a fast Marvel 624Mhz CPU and has 128MB of RAM. (We were just kidding about the fighter jet thing - but we had you there for a second, right? Don't worry, the new Asus device name is so complex that it could have been a fighter jet alright.)

Slightly larger but lighter than the HTC Touch Diamond, the Asus P552w also packs a 2.8-inch 65K color TFT display of QVGA resolution, Wi-Fi, SiRF StarIII GPS receiver, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, and a microSD card slot. The P552w operates with tri-band GSM support and has UMTS 2100Mhz with HSDPA to offer high-speed data transfers.

The software goodies on board the Asus P552w start with the new Asus Glide graphical user interface, which should match the HTC TouchFLO 3D. The thumb-optimized Glide interface so far has only been demoed here and there and the P552w is the first device to feature it. We hope that means the device will have a 3D accelerator on board, too. Asus have also added several touch-optimized applications, including Multi-Home, Anytime Launcher, EziPhoto, and EziMusic.

Next in the software department is the Google integration, which includes a Google search bar on the Today screen and Google Maps with an exclusive feature that allows location sending via messages.

The Asus P552w runs on the latest Windows Mobile Pro 6.1 and the only downer in the otherwise brilliant specs sheet is the 2 megapixel fixed focus camera that is also able to shoot video in only QVGA res at 24fps.

The Asus P552w will be offered in black or white, but there's no info on availability just yet.

Is ASUS prepping a 5-megapixel Omnia challenger?



It looks like ASUS has more in store when it comes to touchscreen phones than that P552w we saw the other day. According to pictures leaked to the Mobile01 forums, the company is planning an Omnia-esque device that will feature a large (WQVGA or WVGA) touchscreen, a 5-megapixel camera, a trackball for non-touch navigation, and the predictable 3G radios / WiFi. Not much is known about the device at this point, though speculation is running rampant on the forum as to CPU specs and on-board memory. It's likely this will be at least competitive in comparison to recent Window Mobile devices we've seen of this variety, though nothing's certain till we get word from ASUS... which we're waiting patiently for, fellas.

Touch Viva: the "Opal" materializes as HTC's low-end champion



Billed as an "affordable touch phone with the benefits of HTC's TouchFLO," the Touch Viva picks up where the original Touch left off and move things just a little bit downmarket for the benefit of smartphone lovers in emerging markets. To that end, the screen stays low-end with QVGA resolution, the radio tops out at EDGE speeds, and the camera's a mere 2-megapixel piece -- but by the same token, the Viva hangs onto WiFi, 256MB of ROM, and GPS. It also gets blessed with a tweaked version of TouchFLO that doesn't rely on 3D acceleration found in HTC's higher-end units. It'll be available starting next month for what we can only imagine will be a pretty reasonable price; backup smartphone, anyone?

HTC's Touch HD unveiled in very much official glory



We're still sans a press release, but a friendly tipster found this quite official page at HTC's very own site, depicting the sexy Touch HD from every angle, with every spec exposed. The rumors were naturally spot on, but that doesn't mean we're any less enthused about the 3.8-inch 800 x 480 touchscreen, 5 megapixel camera, and 3.5mm audio jack. Connectivity-wise we've got Europe-friendly HSDPA, GPS / A-GPS, 802.11g WiFi (we weren't clear on that one before), Bluetooth 2.0+ EDR and a microSD slot. On the software side there's TouchFLO 3D on top of Windows Mobile 6.1 Pro. There's also a front-facing VGA camera for video calls, 512MB of ROM and 288MB of RAM. HTC expects the 1350 mAh battery to score you 390 minutes of 3G talk and 450 ours of 3G standby, with 120 minute video calls just for kicks. The phone measures 12mm thick. Still no word on availability, price, or how you're ever going to stop us from cramming Android onto this thing.

HTC Touch Diamond Coming in White



The HTC Touch Diamond is now reportedly coming in white. If you don’t like the ’stock’ black that it has been available in, perhaps the white is for you? I’m wondering if HTC took a page out of Apple’s playbook here, offering up a black and white version of the device.



The white version of the HTC Touch Diamond should be available in October for an unknown price. Which color would you prefer?
