Apple Allows iPhone 4 Flashlight Apps, 13 Already Available

Apple has decided to allow iPhone 4 flashlight apps after originally saying they were "inappropriate use of hardware".

Michael D'Ulisse of MoreBluSky submitted his flashlight application to the App Store the day following the iPhone 4's release. After a delay in approval he was told the app was "inappropriate use of hardware". He reached to VP Phil Schiller who promised to meet with the App Review department to discuss the situation. Today thirteen flashlight applications have already appeared in the App Store including MoreBluSky's Flashlight - For iPhone 4.

You can purchase most of these apps from the App Store for $0.99.

Juggle A Virtual Soccer Ball On Your iPhone



The World Cup has inspired Americans everywhere, heck, I was even thinking about joining a soccer club. But I'm lazy and probably never will, so I'll just stick to juggling a virtual soccer ball on my iPhone. Augmented reality is awesome.

ARSoccer for the iPhone is pretty much the same augmented reality app we saw for Samsung's Bada OS, but no one got to play it because it was on Bada. The premise for the app is simple, point the camera down to your feet and juggle the virtual soccer ball by kicking it around. It costs a buck and requires iOS4 and is probably not all that accurate, but who cares, I just juggled the ball 20 times! Messi ain't got nothing on me.

An exceptionally shiny first person shooter optimized for the iPhone 4, with slick, functional controls. Best of all is the 5 v 5 team deathmatch mode, which is just like the multiplayer action you're used to on the consoles—including multiple guns, grenades, maps, and medals—except this one you play while you're sitting on the toilet. Mulitplayer works with Wi-Fi or, slightly less well, with 3G, but all in all you get a lot of pocket-size FPS intensity for just $3. Quite an achievement.

Train Conductor 2 For iPhone and iPad Is Addicting, Chaotic Fun



If you've ever played Flight Control, Harbor Master, or the original Train Conductor, you'll love Train Conductor 2. If you haven't played any of those, you'll still probably love Train Conductor 2. It's a fast-paced, time management game.

Train Conductor 2 is in America (instead of the original's Australia). The five levels in the game include New York City, Miami Beach, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon and Nasvhille, with improvements from the original being a new HUD and iPhone 4/iPad graphics. The goal is still the same: direct trains with your finger to avoid Amtravesties. These type of games are so easily digestible that they get incredibly addicting. I'd say it's definitely worth the buck. Works with iPhone/iPod Touch and iPad.

Helsing's Fire For iPhone: The Best Sassy Victorian Puzzler In the App Store



There are plenty of ways an iPhone game can set itself apart: its game play, its visual style, its voice, et cetera. Helsing's Fire, a genuinely hilarious Gothic puzzler, manages to set itself apart several times over.

The game puts you in the wing-tipped shoes of Professor Helsing, who, along with his helpful assistant Raffton, is charged with banishing Dracula and his minions to the netherworld. To do so, he/you must strategically place a torch amidst a screen full of blocks and barricades, casting its righteous, vampire-killing light on whatever baddies may lurk nearby. It's not the most action-packed game play, but the light-puzzle dynamic is unique enough to hold one's interest.

But where the game really shines is in the world it creates. New enemies introduce themselves with hilarious verve and the game is punctuated by reliably clever Victorian-era shit-talking. The puzzle-solving itself is captivating, but it's the writing of Helsing's Fire that really steals the show. All in all, it's the rare game that stands out in more ways than one, and for that it's well worth your $1.

Firefox Home iPhone App Approved and Available Now



It's been a while since we first heard about Firefox Home, an app which allows you to sync your desktop browsing session to your iPhone, but it's been approved by Apple and is available in the iTunes store now.

The app is free and basically means that your iPhone will show your "Firefox history, bookmarks and open tabs, just as you had left them on your desktop computer." The Mozilla Blog explains how it works:

       1. Install Firefox Sync, a free add-on for Firefox, on your desktop.
       2. Restart Firefox and follow prompts to create an account with both a password and a secret phrase.
       3. Go the App Store on your iPhone and search for "Firefox Home" or install it directly from iTunes.
       4. Launch Firefox Home on your iPhone. You'll be prompted to enter your Firefox Sync account info. Enter your username, password and Secret Phrase and tap "Done."
       5. Enjoy!

Seems simple enough.

Skype updated for iOS 4, background VoIP is a go (update: no plans to charge for 3G use)



Well, it's about time. Touted back in March as one of the pillar apps to benefit from the new multitasking API, Skype has finally been updated to iOS 4 compatibility. We're seeing crisper, more retina display-friendly graphics and, more importantly, background VoIP (not for iPhone 3G, naturally). A notification window will pop up when you're called or messaged, and you can use other apps while on the line chatting to international friends at reduced rates. Even on the lock screen, if you receive a call, sliding to unlock will take you immediately into the call. Video chat still isn't here -- a darn shame given the lack of other options now -- but now you've got even more of a reason to rack up those rollover minutes on AT&T's voice plan. Download away!

Update: Remember when Skype was talking about charging extra for calls over 3G starting this month? Straight from the horse's mouth: "we no longer have plans to charge a supplement to make calls over 3G."
