Twitter releases its official Android app



Android 2.1+ Two weeks ago, Twitter announced it was developing its own official Android app. Today, that client was released. You can find it now in the Android Market. There's been a bit of gnashing of teeth over whether Twitter is effectively stabbing outside developers in the back. But after just a few minutes with the app, that's certainly not the case yet, for a couple reasons. One is that the app is open source -- Google will release the code. The other is that, so far, the app is pretty simple.

That's not to say the app is bad. Far from it. But it's pretty basic. It currently only handles one account at a time (that's a deal-breaker for me). Tweets are displayed simply but effectively. You won't have a problem reading them. All of the usual features are there -- search, retweet (only native retweets, unfortunately), picture upload, etc. But the bells and whistles that you find on such apps as Seesmic and Twidroid keep them at the top of our must-have Twitter app list for now. New Android Browsers – Skyfire 2.0 vs. Firefox Mobile


Phonescoop takes a look at a pair of new browsers for Google’s Android OS that were launched this week. They got their hands on the SkyFire 2.0 browser with Flash video support, and the FireFox Mobile (aka Fennec) browser, with FireFox Weave Sync built in.

Dolphin Browser HD arrives for Android 2.0+ users

Good news for you Android 2.0+ users. A new version of the popular Dolphin Browser, named Dolphin Browser HD, has just been released on the Android Market. Dolphin HD boasts some pretty awesome enhancements including multiple tab viewing, full multi-touch gestures,  a thumbnail “flick” menu, gesture based search and URLs, YouTube downloader, and browser extensions.

Dolphin Browser HD is now available on the Android market. More details on the browser can be found in the following video released by the developer.

Android Launcher Pro beta makes an OK home screen even better



Let’s face it people, the stock Android launcher is straight up boring. You can’t configure it, and on most phones, you can’t have more than 3 home screens. Luckily, LauncherPro has arrived, and although it’s very similar to Helix, it’s got some strengths of its own. The first thing I noticed was the speed – this thing is blazing fast. Everything from sliding through the screens to pulling up the app drawer is much faster than stock. Let's check it out after the break.

For all you dock bar fanatics, fear not; it’s there, complete with phone, contact, e-mail, and web shortcuts. Unfortunately, you can’t customize it with your own apps, but it will open whatever software you have set as default. Before you grunt and immediately dismiss this as a contender for your phone, realize that it’s still in beta, and you can bet that more customizations are on the way.

 

If you’re a widget freak like myself, then a mere three screens just ain’t gonna cut it. LauncherPro lets you have three, five or seven home screens, and also lets you choose which one out of the seven will be your default home. To adjust the screen settings, simply hit menu and go to preferences where you can adjust it to your liking. Another useful gimmick this launcher has is when you hit the "home" key at your default home screen, all of your screens will appear, just like the "Leap" feature in HTC's Sense UI.

The app drawer produces a slick “fly-in” effect which is a copycat version of the N1, except without the 3D. You’ll notice that the scrolling is very responsive and produces virtually zero lag.



The bottom line is that this launcher is probably the fastest on the market, however, its current lack of customization (if you're using Google Voice for text messages, you're out of luck here) is holding it back from taking the number-one spot. Be sure to keep your ear to the street, because this home replacement has potential.

Angry Birds hitting Android this summer



We’ve already talked about Angry Birds and the fact that it has crossed the half million downloads mark pretty fast. What I didn’t know is that it was also available for (select, I assume) Nokia (NYSE: NOK) handsets through the Ovi Store. And now we also learn that it will hit the Android Market during the summer.

No additional details are known at the moment, exact release date included. Moreover, we’ve no idea whether the Android game will have some platform-specific features, which if I may speculate, could take advantage of a larger screen found in many of today’s high-end devices powered by Google (NSDQ: GOOG)’s mobile OS.

And that’s about all we know at the moment. Angry Birds is a super fun game, and I’ve no doubts it will be almost as popular on Android as it was on the iPhone — almost, because there are still more iPhone users and they are more likely to purchase an app than Android users.

Adobe Reader now available for Android



Adobe Reader is now available for download in the Android Market. A nice follow-up to the Flash Player 10.1 BETA app released onto the Android Market, for those of you who’ve updated their Nexus On that is.

As we’ve seen before, Adobe Reader is only available for Android 2.1 and up. A search on my MyTouch 3G yielded no results, but both my Nexus One and EVO 4G both had Reader available to download. It should become less of an issue as many handsets that have been waiting for their respective update have begun to see the Android 2.1 OS update recently, but it still must be annoying to users on a lower firmware version.

According to the system requirements, the all Adobe Reader-compatible devices need to have at least a 550 MHz processor, and 256 MB of RAM available. Wah wah.

If you’ve got the horsepower, you can have access to PDF files from anywhere in the Android OS. Once you’ve download a PDF file, Adobe Reader will be ready to open the document. Multitouch has also been implemented in the form of pinch-to-zoom as well as flick-scrolling and panning around the page. Adobe also went a step further by adding a feature they call “reflow,” which is just fancy talk for automatically resizing text to adjust itself for smaller screens.

The information page says that Reader is supported on the Motorola (NYSE: MOT) Droid, Milestone, and Google (NSDQ: GOOG) Nexus One. But as long as the specs on your device are up to snuff, you should be fine. For some reason, some of the comments in the Android Market indicate that devices with the HTC Sense UI perform better.

The official app has a transition from portrait to landscape which is pretty much the same animation as the iPhone OS’, which is nice, but not needed. The official Reader app also has smoother zooming in and out. But other than that, they are pretty much just as functional as one another. One thing that I wish was available in the official Reader application that the EVO’s built-in PDF viewer has is the ability to search a document.

So while the introduction to the official Adobe Reader application is nice, it’s been done already. That said, I will still hang on to the official application because of its speed, and the look is overall nicer. Keep em’ coming Adobe!
