Nokia makes the N9 official, fails to mention launch date, price, and the lack of a MeeGo ecosystem



Every time Stephen Elop, Nokia’s new CEO, gets up on stage he repeats his infamous “we’re no longer in a battle for devices, but in a war of ecosystems” speech, the one where he explains the reason why he decided to switch Nokia’s primary operating system to Windows Phone. Today, at Nokia Connection 2011 in Singapore, Nokia took the wraps off the N9, the very last smartphone the Finnish handset maker plans on building with the MeeGo operating system that they spent years working on, but in the end decided it was not a viable platform for the long term success of the company. From a pure hardware perspective, it’s impressive. The N9 has a 3.9 inch curved Gorilla glass AMOLED screen with a resolution of 854 x 480 pixels, 1 GB of RAM, quadband GSM (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) and pentaband (850/900/1700/1900/2100 MHz) 14.4 Mbps 3G support, it takes microSIM cards, making it the first device other than the iPhone 4 or iPad 2 to do so, it also features an 8 megapixel camera with a Carl Zeiss wide angle lens, the ability to capture 720p video at 30 frames per second, near field communication support, and your typical WiFi/Bluetooth/GPS radios that most every new smartphone comes with.



That’s all well and good, but let us repeat just how limited this device will be. There will be no additional MeeGo devices coming out, meaning developers making applications for the N9 are going to address an incredibly limited market. Worse yet, the N9 doesn’t come with a ship date or price tag, so for all we know it can cost over 800 EUR and hit store shelves in the last week of December. No matter how good this device is, you’re better off getting something that’ll actually have the backing of more than a few hundred thousand loyalists of the Nokia brand. That makes us rather sad since the UI looks reasonably lick and shows us a future that could have been if Elop wasn’t put in charge.

Nokia unveils three new affordable phones – The Nokia C2-02, Nokia C2-03 and Nokia C2-06



Nokia today added to its device portfolio with the launch of three new affordable phones – the Nokia C2-02, Nokia C2-03 and Nokia C2-06.

The Nokia C2-03, the third Dual SIM phone Nokia has brought to market in the past month, comes with Nokia’s unique Dual SIM capabilities. These include features that allow the user to personalize up to five SIM cards with a dedicated look and feel, and an Easy Swap option that lets users change SIM cards in seconds without having to turn off the phone or remove the battery. The Nokia C2-02 is a single SIM version with a similar feature set, as well as push messaging options and a broad range of IM providers included, and the Nokia C2-06 comes in a range of fresh colors with a clean, smooth finish.

The phones all ship with new Nokia Maps for Series 40, where local maps and places of interest are pre-installed on the phone. This means users can view maps and plan routes when the phone is in offline mode, thus saving on the costs of downloading maps over the mobile network.

Internet for all
All three phones also deliver a great internet browsing experience through the data compression technology of the Nokia Browser, which keeps the costs of surfing low and speeds up page downloads – benefiting both consumers and operators. The browser loads with a localized start page, giving the user instant access to the most relevant content, and is tabbed to give easy access to favorite or previously viewed information.

“We want the web to be easy to access, fast and affordable for all,” continued McDowell. “The technology behind the Nokia Browser means that consumers, especially those new to the mobile internet, can get the information they need quickly, as the Nokia Browser serves up relevant local content – making the whole experience more personal and enjoyable.”

The three phones also pack a stereo FM radio, media player and memory support that can be expanded to a whopping 32 GB, letting users store thousands of photos, videos and music files.

The estimated retail price of the Nokia C2-02 and C2-03 is approximately EUR 75 (USD 105) and for the Nokia C2-06 it is EUR 80 (USD 112). All of the devices are expected to hit the market in the third quarter of 2011.

Nokia: Symbian Anna available starting July



In April, Nokia introduced its newest Symbian software update, called Symbian Anna, along with the launch of the Nokia E6 and the Nokia X7. At the Nokia Connection event in Singapore today, Nokia announced that it will start shipping Nokia N8s, E7s, C7s and C6-01s with Symbian Anna in July. If you already own one of these devices, you can download the software by the end of August.

Upgrading to a ‘new look’ phone is free and easy. You can update your device with your PC or over-the-air from the software updater in the phone. The Symbian Anna upgrade gives you a set of new icons, a faster web browser, improved text input and enhanced maps. In other words, your phone will get a free make-over, giving you a better experience while remaining reliable and easy to use.

One of the most anticipated enhancements in Symbian Anna is split screen view while typing, so users can see their message thread. There is also virtual portrait QWERTY for quick, one handed typing. And the web browser is faster and easier to use, delivering quicker page loads and improved navigation.

Ovi Maps has been refreshed with simpler and quicker search, new public transportation routes and check-in to Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare or local social networks. You can also share places via email and SMS, even with friends using non-Nokia phones.

Business users will benefit from instant messaging with Microsoft Communicator Mobile, email enhancements including full meeting request support, and true business grade security with hardware accelerated encryption. There is also easy and secure intranet access for people who want to get on their company intranet.

Introducing Nokia C2-03 with Dual-SIM functionality



Nokia C2-03 combines Dual-SIM functionality with Touch and Type technology. A great phone for those who want to combine their varied needs into a single device. The Easy Swap feature allows you to open the slot on the side of the phone and simply insert your new SIM, with no need to reboot. Should you have more than two SIM cards, the Nokia C2-03 is capable of remembering the settings for up to five separate cards. Measuring 103 x 51.4 x 17mm (L x W x H) and weighing 118g, it fits perfectly in your pocket, or hand. The phone has standby time up to 400 hours with a talk time of up to five hours.

Nokia N950 - developer device
In addition to the commercially available Nokia N9, there is another MeeGo 1.2 Harmattan based device from Nokia available now, the N950. It is aimed at software developers, manufactured in limited quantities, and will not be available 'commercially'.

The N950 has mostly the same hardware as the N9, including 1 GB of RAM and the ARM Cortex-A8 (3630) processor clocked at 1 GHz, with the most important differences being the addition of slide-out hardware keyboard, 4" TFT LCD screen rather than 3.9" AMOLED, bigger dimensions and aluminum casing vs. a polycarbonate unibody of the N9, different camera module (same 8 MPix resolution and similar quality but without Carl Zeiss branding), no NFC chip, Bluetooth version 2.1+EDR (the E9 has version 4.0) and a 1320 mAh battery compared to 1450 mAh one in the N9.

The N950 will NOT be sold. It is a part of the N9 DevKit aimed at developers working on applications for the Nokia N9. Details about the MeeGo Community Device Program can be found here. There are just 250 units available for loan.
