Russian Nexus S Dumps S-AMOLED For Super Clear LCD?

The Nexus S manufactured by Samsung features a Super AMOLED display but it is likely to be available in Russia and maybe other regions with a Super Clear LCD display.

Russian Samsung Community hints that the Nexus S will be available in Russia with a Super Clear LCD display in February 2011, opposed to its U.S. and U.K. siblings that will still feature Super AMOLED. Whether this is a marketing catch Samsung tries to pull in order to lower the handset's price for certain regions or it's just a matter of display hardware shortage they're trying to overcome is yet unknown. One thing is clear though: while Super AMOLED display versions will have vibrant colors and deep blacks due to the backlit organic technology, the Super Clear LCD equipped device will be sporting just an LCD, with all its pros and cons. Couple that with the missing microSD card slot and no LED for notifications and the Nexus S might not be such an attractive device after all.

LG Optimus 2X (Star) goes official, 1080p video recording confirmed

LG is such a tease - it took a few leaks and a sort-of-official announcement, but it is finally confirming some of the specs for the LG Optimus 2X - dual-core Tegra 2 at 1GHz, 1080p video recording and Froyo are a go, but some other specs are still missing.

In Tuesday, while announcing the LG Optimus Mach LU3000, LG made a veiled mention of the LG Optimus 2X (formerly rumored as Star). Now, they have issued a proper press release confirming the most exciting parts of the rumored specs.

The LG Optimus 2X will be the first Tegra2-powered GSM smartphone ever and the dual-core Cortex A9 really showed in early benchmarks. The NVIDIA SoC also enables Full HD (1080p) playback and recording via the 8MP primary camera.

The HDMI port on the Optimus 2X can output Full HD video (unlike current phones, which top out at 720p) and with DLNA support you can play video on a compliant TV without a cable or alternatively pull video from a home DLNA server.

Other confirmed specs include a 4" WVGA screen, a secondary 1.3MP video-call camera, some 8 gigs worth of storage, a microSD card slot and a 1,500mAh battery. Here's hoping that the Tegra 2 in the LG Optimus 2X is not twice as power-hungry as single-core CPUs.

Finally, the OS has been confirmed as well - the Optimus 2X will launch with Android 2.2 Froyo and will eventually get updated to 2.3 Gingerbread. Phone dimensions, GSM bands and some other specs are yet to be announced.

The LG Optimus 2X will be launching next month in South Korea (as the LG SU660) and will be coming westward toward Asia and Europe after that (but no exact date was given). The Gingerbread update timeframe will be announced later too.

Samsung's Infuse 4G: Uh, Why Wasn't This Phone the New Nexus?

"Holy shit." It's not what usually comes to mind when I touch a new phone. But Samsung's Infuse 4G is spectacular. Ridiculously good 4.5-inch screen. 1.2GHz processor. 4G on AT&T. Why, exactly, wasn't this the new Nexus phone?

I pick it up. Whoa. This is quality. The first Samsung phone in ages that doesn't feel cheap—it's a radically better tactile experience than any Galaxy phone, even the Nexus S. The plastic is dense and matte, the back textured. The phone itself a nearly perfectly sculpted, sufficiently thin slab (AT&T's thinnest), the expanse of the 4.5-inch screen making it seem somehow thinner. It's what a high-end phone should feel like.

Let's consider the specs: 1.2GHz processor. The fastest Android phone yet. The screen is comically, hyperbolically named, like the umpteenth version of Street Figher II—Super AMOLED Plus—except that it lives up to the name, in that it's noticeably better than Samsung's current Super AMOLED displays (which are already great), since it packs more subpixels into each pixel. The screen definitely pops more. It's also one of AT&T's first 4G phones. (This may sound confusing, but it's 4G in the same sense as T-Mobile's 4G, since it runs on AT&T's HSPA+ network, not its LTE network.)

Any downsides? Well, I'm mildly concerned about the battery life on this beast. And it's running Samsung's TouchWiz UI on top of an as-of-yet unknown Android variant. A clean build of Android 2.3 would be killer, effectively making it the real Nexus. That said, it might wind up being one in a sense anyway: This is the new blueprint for building an Android phone.

Motorola's Atrix Android Phone Has Two Cores And Can Dock Into a Laptop

It runs Android 2.2, with HTML5 support, and is AT&T's first dual-core processor in an Android phone. And it docks into a laptop. They're calling it the world's most powerful smartphone. ORLY?

It also has 1GB RAM, a 1900mAh (that's ginormous) battery, and 2x faster than competing web browsers. You can "view HD video".

Also! There's a Motorola Atrix Webtop Application, which docks your phone into a laptop, using it to power the entire laptop. This is like Palm's Foleo idea, but, you know, maybe not crappy. Firefox browser inside, running on this device, using the desktop version.

In short, the Motorola HD Dock, the thing that hooks the Atrix to a laptop, is going to let you use your phone as a laptop, taking advantage of the keyboard and mouse on the laptop.

Samsung teases Galaxy S device for MWC – 4G LTE, NVIDIA Tegra 2?

Samsung is teasing the next generation of its Galaxy S lineup for Feb. 13, which lines up directly with the Mobile World Congress show. Could we be in store for a dual-core Galaxy S Android phone with 4G LTE support?

The teaser page shows the Android-powered Galaxy S next to an obscured phone with the date and the phrase, “Evolution is fate.” Considering that LTE stands for “Long Term Evolution,” I don’t think it’s too much of a leap to think this handset will have 4G.

We have just seen the Samsung Infuse 4G at CES 2011 and there hasn’t been a global equivalent. I wouldn’t be too surprised to see this wind up as the global Galaxy S but with LTE (the Infuse 4G has HSPA+).

We’ve also heard that the next Galaxy S device will have a dual-core processor in order to keep up with the Joneses (or the Motorolas). The interesting thing is that it may be the NVIDIA Tegra 2 chip and not Samsung’s own dual-core Orion chip.

NVIDIA previously said Motorola and Samsung will be big customers and that’s why we think the Tegra 2 will power the next-generation Galaxy S phones. While the second-largest handset maker in the world would likely prefer to use its own dual-core Orion chips, we’ve heard that these aren’t quite ready for production on the scale that it needs. Remember, the first Galaxy S lineup sold more than 10 million units.

Samsung said it will have another teaser up Feb. 1, so we can look forward to that. Additionally, the IntoMobile team will be fighting jet lag in Barcelona to give you latest up-to-the-minute news from Mobile World Congress, so keep it locked here.

What would you want from the next-generation Galaxy S lineup? Has the lack of software updates soured you on Samsung’s Android smartphones, no matter how great the specs will be?
