Nokia N9 praised for its hardware, software not so cool yet



Eldar Murtazin is a Russian tech blogger, after whom Nokia sent the authorities to collect a leaked N8 prototype. In an interesting take, he is currently playing with Nokia's next flagship phone, the N9, which is supposedly the first to run the new mobile OS MeeGo. The Nokia N9 is rumored to have a 4" screen, an 8MP camera and a front-facing camera, both with LED flashes.

Eldar describes the hardware as "near perfect", and that is something we can conclude for ourselves from the pictures - that chiclet keyboard on an aluminum sheet will surely feel great. However, it is MeeGo that interests us most, but, unfortunately, the software on the prototype is said to be "not so good at the moment". We aren't surpised, since MeeGo is still very much a work in progress, but Q1 of 2011 should have some moments in store for Nokia fans on that front.

His forum post says that in a few years the MeeGo UI will replace that of Symbian, but its core for low and midrange handsets will stay the same, most likely for compatibility's sake. Flagship Nseries phones like the N9, though, will be running full-blown MeeGo, inside and out. At least that was the original strategy, who knows what will happen at Nokia, with the new management and all.

Nokia X7 Leak – The Nokia Orion concept come true?



Back in February, Nokia Conversations covered a post about a concept phone that folks wished Nokia Made.

It was called the Nokia Orion and resembled a gameboy advance esque (now N8 esque) tapered edges. It’s a little more streamlined than the orion with totally flat seamless front unlike the N8 and E7 with bezels and plastic tips for reception. (This bodes well for the very sleak Community concept, Nokia U, no? )

Well behold what is supposedly the leaked Nokia X7. It’s Symbian^3 based candy bar touch screen. Check it out above playing NFS shift, as well as screens and a video below showing X7 with S^3 (but with 4 homescreens. This would be nice especially with the upcoming draggable homescreen)

We’ll update as soon as we find out on tech specs. Most likely it should have the same innards (CPU/GPU/RAM) as the other S^3 handsets.

Nokia going Windows Phone 7?



A range of Nokia smartphones, powered by Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 platform, could be on the cards. The move follows talks between the two companies, led by Nokia’s chief executive Stephen Elop, former Microsoft head of business. Elop joined Nokia in September this year with a brief to turn around the mobile phone giant’s ailing fortunes. The claim is made by respected Russian blogger Eldar Murtzain in Mobile Review. He says Elop has initiated talks with Microsoft, about ‘creating an entire line of Windows Phone devices that may go under the name Nokia.’

Nokia’s Symbian-powered smartphones have been struggling to compete against Android and Apple devices and it has yet to launch its MeeGo platform. Microsoft’s newly launched Windows Phone 7 is also facing a major challenge in trying to grab market share off Apple and Android. Any such deal would give Nokia’s smartphone range and Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 a much needed boost.

Nokia Concept Windows Phone 7 smartphone



As you know, lately a lot of rumors regarding the issuance of Nokia’s smartphone operating system Windows Phone 7. However, there is no official information on whether the Finnish manufacturer to use the operating system from Microsoft in their devices or not. Actually, this uncertainty has not prevented the Polish design studio Mindsailors Design Studio to develop the concept of WP7-smartphone Nokia. What came of it, you can see on the submitted images.

Nokia E6-00 specs to include VGA screen, QWERTY keyboard, 8MP camera?

If you’ve never heard of the Nokia E6-00 before it’s because the handset has not been announced yet. However, it does exist, and Nokia could officially unveil it soon – maybe at MWC 2011 in February.

Until then, this XML file found on Nokia’s website reveals some of the new Eseries smartphone’s features: VGA (640 x 480 pixels) display, HSDPA, Wi-Fi, Symbian, and an ARM processor.

Mobile Bulgaria has it that the E6 also features an 8MP camera with LED flash, and a full QWERTY keypad below the display – so it might look like a bigger Nokia E5 or something.



Another unannounced Nokia smartphone is the X7 – which should be released in the US via AT&T and may be officially presented at the same time with the E6-00.

Meanwhile, we’re still waiting for Nokia to launch its first Eseries touchscreen smartphone, the E7 (delayed until the first quarter of this year).

Nokia N9 to bust loose with MeeGo on Intel Atom power?



Nokia has to do something big if it wants to crack the US smartphone market. We can agree on that, right? And believe us, Nokia wants this -- nothing will make the mighty Finns (and the company's global investors) prouder than to gain some traction in the home of Apple pie and Google desserts. So how will the company do it? With Symbian? Oh, hell no. By introducing another MeToo handset? Nope, with MeeGo on a rockin' platform like the rumored N9 slider pictured above.

Nokia announced its hardware plans for Maemo 6 a long time ago. At that time, the company was clear that it would continue using TI OMAP processors. Much has changed since then, however. In addition to several key leadership changes including a new Canadian-born CEO who spent much of his time working in the US, Nokia has joined Intel to roll up Maemo 6 and Moblin into MeeGo with Nokia's first Maemo 6 MeeGo/Harmattan handset pushed into 2011. Simultaneously, Intel has also been doing its best to show its new Moorestown platform as a powerful ARM alternative, even showing off MeeGo handsets exploiting a Lincroft SoC and Atom processor core. And Intel has said that Medfield-based smartphones (Moorestown's successor) would arrive in the middle of 2011.

So why the build-up? Well, we've just been tipped to a claim by Prosessori, a respected Finnish technology magazine, that the Nokia N9 will launch with a 1.2GHz Atom processor. Better yet, it could be unveiled as soon as Mobile World Congress in February, presumably during Stephen Elop's keynote. Do we believe it? Not entirely, but it is possible given the chain of events that have taken place. And you can bet that the first commercially available Intel smartphone with a brand new Nokia user experience would certainly grab headlines in the US and around the world. Something that should translate into high-end market share (and profits) if it's as "exciting" as Elop claims.
