When Nokia announced that they'd be working with Windows Phone 7 as their smartphone platform, the implication was that Symbian, at some point, would begin to be phased out. Further details of this phase out have been released, and the grim reality is that a lot of Nokia employees are going to lose their job in the process. There's going to be a deal between Nokia and consulting firm Accenture, whereby 3,000 Nokia employees get transfered to Accenture, with an additional 4,000 Nokia employees losing their job by the end of next year. Those that are transferring to Accenture will continue working on Symbian, but on a consulting basis, which represents Nokia's shifted focus from Symbian to Windows Phone 7.

Nokia’s Dual Display 3D Communicator seen in Patent App

I saw a random tweet this morning about a Nokia 3D communicator and assumed it was spam. 5 hours on a train later and I see a tip in my inbox for the same thing and was somewhat pleasantly surprised. This is like a Nintendo 3DS crossed with a Microsoft Courier (or other dual display devices actually available in market).

Using the camera to track head movement, a 3D image will appear from the 3D display, glasses free. Unlike the 3DS from Nintendo, you don’t need to be at a precise point at which to view in 3D.

3D would handle the depth control automatically. Shadows can even be placed from the second screen.

What’s especially cool is that you can now have hover button. This is what I thought could be the evolution from touch, where you’re no longer even physically touching the screen but handling and manipulating objects in virtual 3D space.

I hope this isn’t another one of those Nokia things where they try to pioneer something and fail and someone else comes along with exactly the same thing, just polished and it flies.

Nokia holding an event in Athens next week

It seems that Nokia is planning on holding some kind of event in Greece next week. My vote goes for some kind of Windows Phone 7 event. Cross your fingers...

Video: Nokia N9 teaser promises to deliver “Our Next Sense”, whatever that means

Nokia has one more MeeGo, formerly known as Maemo, device in the pipeline before they thrown the operating system under the bus. Depending on who you ask, it’s either going to be called the N9 or N950, implying it’s a successor to either the N8, the best cameraphone on the market that sadly failed to gain mass appeal because Symbian^3 isn’t as pretty/intuitive/competitive enough compared to Android and iOS, or a successor the the N900, the only Maemo/Meego device Nokia managed to ship with a cellular radio inide that also failed to become a major success because of the bulky appearance and lack of an ecosystem and applications. The N9 has already cleared the FCC, and like the N8 that has come before it, it promises to include support for all 4 2G bands and all 5 3G bands. We’ve already seen images of it leak as far back as August 2010, but now we’ve got something a little bit more juicy. Embedded below is a video teaser that’s obviously been done by professionals and it shows brief snippets of the N9 in action interlaced with random artsy fartsy video clips set to Rick Springfield’s 1981 hit “Jessie’s Girl”.

It’s tough to judge a device based on this video alone, but frankly we’re a little frightened. What happens if the N9 turns out to be absolutely mind bendingly awesome, yet Nokia continues with their plans to scrap the OS they’ve worked on for over half a decade? MeeGo is an open source project after all, so someone can come in and build on top of it, but the chances of that happening are rather low since most handset vendors would rather blow their research and development budget on “improving” the stock Google Android experience with fancy icons and home screens.

Expect to hear more about this thing by the end of June.

MeeGo smartphones from Intel 'early next year', Nokia blamed for the delay

Intel's CEO Paul Otellini has just disclosed that Medfield based smartphones are on their way and the first models will come 'in the first part of 2012'. For the delay, Otellini blamed Nokia whom he called "a wrong partner to have picked". Fortunately, according to Otellini that time will not be wasted completely, as Intel now uses the project they developed together with Nokia as a reference design for their own MeeGo smartphone.

Nokia's WP7 phones to use U8500 dual-core 1.2GHz chipsets?

The CEO of ST-Ericsson got chatty in front of Forbes and said that Nokia’s Windows Phone 7 devices will be powered by the U8500 dual-core CPU and its successors will go on to power Windows Phone 8 phones too.

So far, Windows Phone 7 devices have been exclusively powered by Qualcomm chipsets (due to Microsoft’s limiting guidelines, which were revised recently). ST-Ericsson’s CEO however says that they will be one of two chip suppliers for Nokia’s WP7 phones (he didn’t who the other was).

The first Nokia devices will use the dual-core U8500 chipset, which has been seen running at 1.2GHz. Things might change by the time these devices come out, but they look to be the first dual-core Windows Phone 7 handsets.

The CEO also said that over the course of 2012 Nokia will release 12 Windows Phone 7 devices that will be based on future versions of the U8500 chipset. He also believes that ST-Ericsson will be a key supplier for Windows Phone 8, yep that's 8.

The Mango update is v7.5, so Windows Phone 8 is already very likely in the works (and the rumor mill suggests that it and Windows 8 will be closely related).

The U8500 has a powerful Mali-400 GPU, the same as on the Samsung I9100 Galaxy S II.

Nokia to launch new Windows Phones every 2-3 months

Although there is still no official word on when exactly Nokia’s first Windows Phone devices will be out – it may happen before or after the end of 2011 – today the company has provided some extra details on its WP strategy.

According to Jo Harlow, Nokia’s executive vice president of smart devices (who was quoted by PC Mag), new Windows Phone devices should be launched “in a rhythm that might be every couple of months, every three months, something like that.”

With new devices being introduced at such a fast pace, we’ll likely see handsets of various forms factors and price points pretty soon (for example, we’ve heard that a Windows Phone E 71 / E6-like handset is in the making).

Nokia is also seriously considering manufacturing CDMA Windows Phone handsets for North America – which wouldn’t be a bad idea at all, since Verizon and Sprint serve about 150 million customers together, and may help Nokia sell a few smartphones.

Jo Harlow hopes that Microsoft’s strong relationships with US carriers will allow Nokia to make a splash on the US market.

As mentioned earlier this week, the first Nokia Windows handsets will run Windows Phone Mango (which comes with about 500 new features, so it should be a quite capable OS).

Nokia to announce a "market disrupting device" on June 21st

One of the biggest events for Nokia, Nokia Connection 2011, kicks off in less than a week on June 21st in Singapore, but some of the mysterious devices coming up as “the next chapter” have already been teased. Namely, Nokia Australia has sent an invitation to iTWire for the announcement and demonstration of a “market disrupting device,” a definition coinciding with the terminology over at Espoo about MeeGo, “a future disruption in mobile ecosystem.”

The disruptor “will be unveiled and demonstrated for the first time by Kurt Bonnici, product and technology marketing manager at Nokia Australia.” But don't expect to hear anything more than the technical details, as swiftly after the announcement, Nokia's chief executive will go on stage for its keynote speech at Nokia Connection.

All additional business details about the mysterious Nokia handset will be given later on. But we expect to see more than just one device as the agenda for the event also includes a speech by Nokia's executive VP for Mobile Phones, Mary McDowell, who will elaborate on “the global launch of brand new mobile devices and related services.” Can we expect a Windows Phone that early? Stephen Elop has pointed out that a Nokia-branded WP device is on track for release this holiday season, so even if something gets announced it will probably take quite a while to reach the end user. What are your expectations about this “market disrupting device”? Feel free to share in the comments below.

Nokia Lankku spotted?

Why must Nokia choose such a hard-to-pronounce name like the Lankku for their upcoming handset? That’s what we think it is anyways with what you see on the right, where it is touted to be the successor to the first consumer MeeGo-powered handset (N9-00) that was more or less discontinued earlier this February. Insiders have claimed that the Lankku might keep or give up the N9-01 moniker when it is ready to ship to consumers.

Apart from that, it is said that the Lankku will be powered by the MeeGo Harmattan, where it will ship to our friends living across the pond in Q3, bringing with it a 960 x 540 resolution display, an 8-megapixel autofocus camera and a reportedly thin form factor.
