Nokia making a crazy Sidekick-esque phone for Verizon?



This rumor's got more holes than swiss, but stranger things have happened, so it'll be an interesting scoop to keep an eye on nonetheless. A tipster to Boy Genius Report claims that Nokia is working on a "swiveling E71-type handset" for -- get this -- Verizon, of all carriers, featuring a full QWERTY keyboard and running Series 40. Judging from the mockup here, that sorta puts it in the same vein as the Sidekick -- a form factor most carriers and manufacturers (especially Nokia) have avoided. Given that Espoo's still basically dipping its toes in the CDMA waters -- and the fact that a Verizon device running Series 40 proper seems implausible at best -- we're going to be shocked if this thing sees the light of day. Pleasantly surprised, yes, but still shocked.

Nokia 5530 XpressMusic in works?



Daily Mobile has an interesting story, which unfortunately we can’t check at the moment. According to the Swedish website, Nokia (NYSE: NOK) is working on a smaller version of its all-touchscreen handset, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, that will be called Nokia 5530 XpressMusic.

And while there are no images at the moment to confirm this, Daily Mobile says the specs include 2.9-inch touchscreen, WiFi, 3.2 megapixel camera, Symbian S60 5th edition, standard 3.5mm audio jack, FM radio with RDS, 150MB of internal memory and of course a microSD memory card slot. GPS receiver is not on the list, and we’ve no information whether this is a 3G (HSDPA) enabled device, or not.

It’s not hard to imagine the logic behind a device such as the Nokia 5530 XpressMusic. It sounds like a winner designed to grab the attention of users in emerging markets. Without a 3G radio and GPS, it should be significantly cheaper than its older brother, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, yet providing decent functionality all round. We’ll see where this goes…

Nokia 5530 XpressMusic rumored as Nokia's third full touch phone

As rumors have it, Nokia seem to have another full touch phone in store for us - one that's even cheaper than Nokia 5800. The unannounced Nokia 5530 XpressMusic is said to be due for September and will be more compact and won't have a GPS receiver.

A "reliable source" to Daily Mobile claims that the upcoming 5530 XpressMusic is another touch-based device form Nokia. The rumored specs include a 2.9-inch touch display, Wi-Fi, FM radio, 3.2 megapixel snapper, 3.5mm audio jack and 150MB internal storage expandable via microSD slot.

As you can see there is much similarity with the 5800 XpressMusic, but the screen is smaller. There is also no info on GPS or 3G support, but the OS remains Symbian S60 5th Edition.

It seems the 5530 XpressMusic is a smaller sibling of 5800 and hopefully it will be cheaper due to the smaller screen size and missing GPS receiver.

According to the source the phone will be introduced in September this year.

Nokia XpressMusic 5900 leaks out?



Sure, this could just be a really nice KIRF, but we've got a hunch these pics of an upcoming Nokia XpressMusic 5900 are the real deal -- it's just too understated to be shanzhai. Compared to the 5800, the updated handsets are said to feature a slightly larger 3.5-inch display, a five megapixel camera, and more or less the same build of S60 5th edition, all in a slightly thinner case. That's all we know for now, but we're told we'll find out more soon -- keep it locked.

Next Nokia touch smartphone to come with capacitive touchscreen and multi-touch?

As you’ve probably heard, Nokia’s first full touchscreen phone – Nokia 5800 Xpress Music has been a huge success.

But there was one thing in 5800XM,  that the geek’o’sphere have been loudly complaining about. Resistive touchscreen used both in Nokia 5800 and in their second full touchscreen phone – Nokia N97.

The main reason Nokia reps have  been giving for this, was Nokia’s Asian market, where the stylus based character entry feature is considered a must. And capacitive touchscreen devices are not up to the task on this. Well, resistive touchsreens also appear to be cheaper, so that might have also  been a reason to have one on such a low priced device as 5800XM.

But Asian character entry and price issues apart, for now,  the capacitive touch technology makes for better and more responsive  full touchscreen devices.

Well, it looks like Nokia reached the same decision too and will soon launch full touchscreen devices with capacitive touch screens.  If this report is true.



According to Digitimes, Nokia has decided to adopt Synaptics touchscreen IC solution for a high-end smartphone to be launched in Q3 and it does not rule out multi-touch functions.

And, since Synaptics doesn’t do resistive touch, focusing on development of capacitive sensing instead, it stands to reason that the new Nokia full touch smartphone will have capacitive toucscreen too.

There’s no official N98 touchscreen handset coming from Nokia anytime soon but that doesn’t mean you can’t get a Nokla N98. That’s right, someone cloned a concept that didn’t have any success with Nokia yet. The clone phone will offer a 3-inch QVGA screen and dual-SIM support but there’s no 3G and not even EDGE support. You should also expect no great warranty and absolutely no customer support but I am just speculating here. Maybe Nokla have cloned that too. Nevertheless, in case you will get the phone, let us know how it works. It has a bargain price of only $78 which is still too much for a clone device.
