Nokia Patents Multi-touch Like Technology?



Although Apple is not alone in the arena of multi-touch and multi-touch technology itself is far from being an Apple invention, Apple has indeed filed a patent for future multi-touch products.

The first multi-touch like interface was introduced way back in 2006, when the NYU professor Jeff Han wowed the crowd at the March TED (Technology, Entertainment and Design) conference with a demo of his multitouch research.

Not to mention that Bill Gates demo'd Microsoft's top secret project, a Surface Table in early 2007, months before the iPhone release and even Apple CEO Steve Jobs reportedly used Microsoft's work with tablet PCs as the jumping-off point for iPhone development.

So, despite lots of big players in multi-touch patent game, it seems that Nokia isn't worried about infringing anyone else's technology as they are working on its own multi-touch user interface!?

Latest Nokia’s patent application with the USPTO (patent application 20080316181) reveals the user interface that is very similar to multitouch. "The touch sensitive service is capable of detecting multiple simultaneous points of touch."

Yeah I know, it sounds complicated but multiple simultaneous points of touch are nothing but the multi-touch in simple words.

The rest of the documents describe a ways on how you can perform different actions by swiping a dedicated finger in a pre-determined matter on any part of the screen.

What are your thoughts? Apple's patents are strong enough to absolutely stop others from using similar technology or maybe Nokia has found a hole!?

Nokia 6208c pops up on Nokia China’s web site

Fashioned from Nokia’s first touchscreen with a built-in keypad hybrid, the Nokia 6708, the Nokia 6208c is now official on Nokia’s Chinese web site. This handset has been confirmed to be running Nokia’s S40 software, and will feature a full alphanumeric keypad as well as a 2.4-inch touchscreen display for input.

This makes the Nokia 6208c the very first S40 Nokia handset to sport a touchscreen, though it hasn’t been specified whether it will have a capacitive or a resistive one at launch. But judging from the presence of a stylus in its retail package, I think it’s safe to say this will have resistive screen that’s tailored for use with handwriting in mind.



The Nokia 6208c will be a Tri-band EGSM 900/1800/1900 handset, with Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity and support for tethering. It also comes with a built-in 3.2-megapixel camera with 4x digital zoom and dual-LED flash. A 3.5 mm headphone jack is also present, making this an instant music player for those who find carrying a separate device to be a hassle.

It will be available in Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, India, the Middle East and North Africa, for an unspecified price. We’re guessing you’ll have to contact local retailers for that information.

Nokia Gun cellphone might make you hit more dead spots than usual 

If Nokia had been a company back in the Wild Wild West, I have a feeling this “gun phone” pictured here would be one of their greatest flagship products.

The magazine appears to be a Nokia 6020, with the LCD screen and keypad sticking out on the gun handle’s side. It wasn’t specified of what caliber this gun will be, though it should work fine with all bands being a handset-handgun hybrid.



Needless to say, this gun cellphone won’t be available through retail units any time soon. Nokia would probably have to be very near bankruptcy, and not to mention crazy, before they start going for the market this product will serve.
