Pistons sign 2nd-round pick Terrico White

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP)—The Detroit Pistons have signed Terrico White(notes)  to a two-year contract.

The team announced the signing Friday. White’s salary will be $475,000 this season as a rookie and the second year of the deal is not guaranteed.

Detroit drafted the Mississippi guard in the second round with the 36th pick overall in June. The 6-foot-5 White, who is from Memphis, Tenn., averaged 15 points last season as a sophomore.

Detroit’s first exhibition game is Oct. 5 at Miami.

Brandon Jennings Intends to Set the League on Fire in 2010-11

Brandon Jennings’(notes)  rookie season was overwhelming, both in terms of his production and personality. As point guard of the surprising Bucks, Jennings overcame some poor shooting to help the team to the playoffs and take the Hawks to seven games even without inside stalwart Andrew Bogut(notes)  in the lineup.

Around the time of the 2009 draft, Jennings made noise as a brash young man with big expectations for himself and his team. To the surprise of many, he exceeded those goals as a rookie. To the surprise of no one, Yung Buck has set a new, higher bar for himself and the Bucks in 2010-11. From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

    "This year I’m working hard to come back," Jennings said. "I want to be a double-double guy. I feel like with the talent we have I can be that.

    "All-star weekend is in Los Angeles, and that is a goal to be an all-star. Win 50 games, win the Central Division and get out of the first round and see what happens."

Jennings averaged 15.5 ppg and 5.7 apg last season, so he’ll have to boost his assist numbers considerably if he wants to achieve that goal. If he does so, then he stands a decent chance of making the All-Star team, but it’s still a tough accomplishment to reach. The team goals will also be tough, but the Bucks should have a healthy Bogut and made several pickups this offseason.

Clearly, Jennings has fancy plans, and pants to match. But even if he does reach those goals, the season could still be a success. Jennings is the type of person whose own self-regard makes him work harder. In other words, he needs to set high goals for himself to succeed.

Sometimes, that comes across as arrogance, and he appears to be something of a jerk. But as Jennings makes more comments like these, it becomes clear that it’s an essential part of what makes him such a good basketball player. Without talking up his own ability, he wouldn’t be able to lead his team to more wins.

Lakers sign 2nd-round draft pick

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP)—The Los Angeles Lakers have signed second-round draft pick Derrick Caracter(notes).

The 22-year-old forward was taken with the 58th pick in the June draft.

He averaged 15.4 points, 8.6 rebounds and 1.4 blocks starting all five games for the Lakers’ entry in the Las Vegas summer league.

Caracter averaged 14.1 points and 8.1 rebounds at UTEP last season. He played his first two seasons at Louisville before transferring for his junior year.

Terms of the deal announced Friday weren’t disclosed.

The Lakers signed their other second-round pick, forward Devin Ebanks(notes), a day earlier.

Malone gives short Hall of Fame jacket to boy

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP)—The Mailman delivered again.

Karl Malone will go home with a spot in Hall of Fame. Unlike the other inductees, though, he’ll go without his Hall of Fame jacket.

The sports coat with the Hall of Fame logo now belongs to a young boy in a wheelchair, who watched as Malone and the other new members of the Hall of Fame class took questions and posed for pictures Friday.

“I told him when he graduates from high school he will have a jacket to wear,” Malone said.

The coat didn’t exactly fit to begin with. The sleeves were well short on his arms and so tight that Malone joked maybe it was supposed to be fellow inductee Scottie Pippen’s.

“My 12-year-old daughter couldn’t get into it,” Malone said, laughing.

The former Utah Jazz star wondered what he would do with the jacket anyway.

“Put it in some closet and years from now blow the dust off of it, light up a cigar, and look at it?” he said. “This little boy will do something with it. I loved that I did it.”

A Hall of Fame spokesman said he didn’t know the boy’s name.
