A superb strike from Jermaine Beckford gave Leeds United a half-time lead in a tight encounter at Elland Road.
There appeared to be little danger when the striker picked the ball up on the right edge of the box on 33 minutes, but he cut inside and fired an unstoppable curling effort into the top corner.
Millwall thought they had opened the scoring ten minutes earlier when Gary Alexander met Dave Martin's cross with a far post header which was scrambled off the line amidst protests from several Lions players that it had indeed crossed for a goal.
In a feisty and competitive match, clear-cut chances were at a premium. Izale McLeod put an early header wide for the visitors, whilst Beckford lashed an effort off target and Andy Robisnon saw a longe range strike deflected just over for Leeds.
After the break The Lions enjoyed good spells of posession but struggled to find a way through to United keeper Casper Ankergren.
Dave Martin began to get some joy down the left flank and one deflected cross-shot almost fell invitingly for Izale McLeod.
The hard-working Alexander again went close to finding the target just past the hour with a free-kick that skimmed the bar. Then with the closing minutes ticking away Dave Martin hit a rasping 25 yarder that was well save by the Leeds keeper.
Leeds' had offered little threat in the second half, but with The Lions pushing forward in search of the elusive equaliser they were caught out by the old 1-2. Ankergren's long free-kick was flicked on by sub Luciano Bechio for Beckford to slam home his and Leeds' second deep into injury time.

James Henry struck a superb injury-time winner as Millwall underlined their promotion credentials with their first-ever win at Huddersfield's Galphram Stadium.
Henry's third goal since joining The Lions on loan from Reading could not have come at a better time in the final of four injury-time minutes.
Having gone 1-0 ahead courtesy of Marc Laird's 69th-minute effort, Millwall were then hauled back to level peggings just four minutes later through Gary Roberts effort.
But with the game heading for a draw, a stunning break by sub Scott Barron set up Henry, who swept the ball home to send the travelling fans behind the goal wild.
It was a fitting finish to a game that, for large chunks, was dominated by Kenny Jackett's League One high-fliers.
Lions boss Jackett made a surprise to both his starting line-up and formation, bringing Richard Duffy back into the side at the expense of striker Ashley Grimes.
