Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan may look to offer Leeds striker Jermaine Beckford a route out of League One.

The big striker is reeling from the prospect of another season in the third tier of English football and could be a target for a host of Premier League and Championship clubs this summer.

Leeds, who lost to Doncaster in the League One play-off final, could face a fight to keep hold of the 24-year-old and are wary that former manager Dennis Wise, now executive director at Newcastle, may go back calling for Beckford.

His form dipped at the turn of the year although he did still reach 20 goals for the season for the Elland Road outfit and manager Gary McAllister would be a reluctant seller.

MLSE in talks to buy English soccer club: Report

Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment is in talks to purchase English soccer club Leeds United, British newspaper the Sunday Mirror reported on its website.

Citing unnamed sources, the Mirror reported preliminary talks between Leeds and MLSE have already taken place. Leeds chairman Ken Bates would not confirm the discussions occurred.

MLSE president Richard Peddie and chief financial officer Ian Clarke visited England last month and met officials from a number of clubs, including Southampton and Reading.

MLSE owns the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Toronto Raptors, American Hockey League team Toronto Marlies and Major League Soccer franchise Toronto FC.

Leeds currently plays in League One, England's third professional division.

Leeds duo pen new contracts

Leeds have prepared for another season in League One by handing new one-year contracts to striker Tomi Ameobi and goalkeeper David Lucas.

Youth-team graduate Ameobi, brother of Newcastle's Shola, made his first-team debut against Portsmouth in the Carling Cup last season.

The 19-year-old finished the season on loan at Scunthorpe, where he made nine substitute appearances.

Former Preston and Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Lucas, 30, joined Leeds last September. He has made five starts for the Yorkshire club.

Defender Darren Kenton has been released after joining from Leicester on a permanent basis in January.

The versatile defender, 29, initially arrived on loan and went on to make 16 appearances.

Becks Happy At Leeds - Agent

Jermaine Beckford is set to stay with Leeds next season, so long as the club do not cash in on their 20-goal striker, according to the player's agent.
Beckford will be the subject of some interest this summer after United's failure to win promotion, but he is not expected to request a transfer out of Elland Road, despite Sunday's defeat to Doncaster Rovers in the League One play-off final.

The 24-year-old has two years remaining on his contract, and he is one of the most valuable members of Gary McAllister's squad after becoming the first Leeds player since 2003 to score 20 goals in a season.

McAllister is under no obligation to sell this summer, despite Leeds facing a second season in League One, but a decent offer for the ex-Wealdstone striker might persuade the Scot to part with his top goalscorer.

Newcastle United, Norwich City and Reading are already reported to be among the clubs to have been linked with a bid for Beckford since the final at Wembley, but the forward would be happy to begin another season for the Whites, should McAllister decide to retain him.

Beckford's agent, Nick Rubery, told the YEP: "Jermaine won't be walking into Leeds United and asking for a transfer.

"He's got two years left on his contract and he's very settled in Leeds. He's very down after Sunday because it was a chance for him and the club to move to a higher level, but that's football.

"If Leeds accept an offer from another club then we'd have to consider it, but that's up to the club to decide.

"Jermaine won't be making any demands, and at the moment he's just getting over Sunday's game. He's happy at Leeds."

Wortley FC: Young footballer signs for Leeds United

Young Wortley FC footballer Rhys Jenkinson has hit a new goal in his aim to play professional football by signing a one-year contract for the Leeds United Academy.
The 11-year-old, who plays in right midfield, will be in the Academy under-12s team next season, facing top Premiership Academy teams such as Manchester United and Liverpool.

His father, Steven, of Wadlands Close, Farsley, said: "It's a dream come true for him. We are all very proud. He's worked very, very hard."

A pupil at Springbank Primary School in Farsley, Rhys started playing football with Wortley Boys when he was seven and has also been a member of the Leeds City Boys under-11 squad.

His older brother Luke, 17, another midfielder, plays for Farsley Celtic.

Leeds fans eye Westwood and Maynard

Carlisle United goalkeeper Keiren Westwood certainly made an impression on the supporters of Leeds United during the clubs epic play-off semi-final matches. The 23 year old was outstanding in both ties, and features highly in a poll of potential Summer signings that fans would like to see arrive at Elland Road.

Westwood has been the Cumbrian's number one for the past three seasons and his recent progress has seen him gain international recognition, being called into the Republic of Ireland squad by boss Giovanni Trapattoni on the strength of his play-off heroics against the Whites.

The quick, agile keeper was named in the League One team of the season, and with only 12 months left on his current contract, is sure to attract a lot of interest during the transfer window.

Also attracting big support in the poll of potential new recruits is Crewe Alexandra's young striker Nicky Maynard. The 21 year old has hit 32 goals in just 59 appearances for the Railwaymen, and is another player that will not doubt appear on the radar of Leeds boss Gary McAllister.

Riordan could move to League One Leeds

One of the names always high on the agenda during the January transfer window was that of Celtic striker Derek Riordan, but come February he was still with the SPL Champions.

It is thought we made at least two bids for him, the last one coming on the last day before the window closed, and it was expected that we would renew our interest during the summer months. However, there has been no mention of a move for Riordan since the end of the season and the keen interest in Martin Paterson suggests there might not be.

Things haven't gone too well for the Celtic striker since our bids failed. He's made only one first team appearance, and that as a late substitute for Gary Caldwell in a Scottish FA Cup tie, and he's also had a very public disagreement with manager Gordon Strachan that more than outdid the Lafferty/Coyle spat.

The two clubs to have been linked with him in the last couple of weeks are Preston and League One Leeds. Preston have denied any interest but it now looks as though an offer could be coming in from LOL.

Manager Gary McAllister is looking to rebuild his squad after they lost at Wembley to Doncaster Rovers in the play off final and it is thought he's made Celtic an offer of around £500,000 for Riordan.

It is unlikely that will get him away from Celtic but he is expected to move before the start of next season and McAllister is expected to be back with a bigger offer.
