Ah yes, the Ki-44. Best climbing figther out of all IJAAF planes. Built rugged enough to attack B-29s. Manueverability suffered though, it was no Ki-43.

Mostly repeating what others have said but this info is from Bueschel, Ki-44 Shoki in Japanese Army Air Force Service :

9th Sentai: Sent to China as occupational force and Nanking defense. Disbanded end of war. (That is important to note, many many Sentai units did not survive the war.) Hunted B-29s.

22nd Sentai: Book says "had at least 1 Ki-44". I don't consider that a Ki-44 squad. Mostly flew manly Ki-84s.

23rd Sentai: Converted from Ki-43s, operated Eastern Japan (defense), Iwo Jima. Also flew some Ki-61s, I think.

29th Sentai: Formosa and Philipines. Disbanded Formosa end of war. Also flew Ki-43s, Ki-84s.

47th Sentai: Perhaps the most well known Ki-44 squad, first Sentai to fly them. Operated in Okinawa and also eastern defense sector. Disbanded at end of war at Ozuki, Yamaguchi Prefecter, Japan. Unit formed from 47th Independent Squadron.

50th Sentai: Had only few Ki-44s. Flew mostly Ki-43, Ki-84s.

64th Sentai: Brief use of Ki-44, flew Ki-43s. This Sentai had the highest number of aces.

70th Sentai: Homeland Defense (Manchoukuo). Also flew Ki-84s late in the war. Disbanded at end of war at Kashiwa, Japan.

85th Sentai: Operated in China (Nanking), then converted air defense of Japan. Disbanded in Korea end of war.

87th Sentai: Manchoukuo, Dutch East Indies, Japan (eastern defense sector). Flew Ki-27s early on but transitioned to Ki-44 and apparently did not fly anything else (i.e. Ki-43, Ki-84). Disbanded in Singapore at end of war.

104th Sentai: Manchoukuo, counter Soviet Patrol. Fought Soviets and Mongolian air force. (Though from my brief knowledge of history between the soviets and Japan, I can't imagine there being much, if any, action. Not sure about this...) In August of 1944, unit reorgonized as the 25th Independent Squadron.

246th Sentai: Japan, Philipines, Japan middle defense sector. Disbanded at Osaka end of war. Also flew KI-84 and Ki-46.

Notable Ki-44 aces:

Yoshio Yoshida, 70th Sentai. One of the top B-29 hunters in the JAAF.

Makota Ogawa, 70th Sentai. Credited with 7 B-29 and 2 P-51 kills.
