iPad 2 receives 4 out of 10 in repairability, 512MB RAM confirmed, 25% slimmer display package




iFixit took apart Apple's iPad 2, and revealed a way thinner LCD display package, making it incredibly hard to separate the front panel without breaking it.

512MB of RAM were confirmed via software, and a few Broadcom, Texas Instruments and ST Micro chips have been used for various duties. The A5 dual-core chipset seemed to be marked by Samsung, but that is to be confirmed at a later time. Recently we wrote Apple might have gone with TSMC Foundries for the manufacturing.

The low repairability score of 4 on a 10 scale the iPad 2 got since now the glass is just glued with adhesives, instead of using tabs as in Apple's first tablet, and almost impossible to separate easily. Add to that a thinner overall package - both the LCD panel, and the glass on top, are about 25% thinner than those in the 9.7" display package of the first iPad - and trying to disassemble the iPad 2 without shattering the glass seems to be a mission impossible. Oh, the rear camera is confirmed to be less than a megapixel, so it's most likely the fixed-focus one we have on the iPod touch. The battery pack has almost the same capacity as on the first iPad, though - here we have about 6570mAh (25Wh and 3.8 volts) - which is a tribute to the efficiency of the dual-core chipset, since the iPad 2 lasts roughly the same as the original iPad.

iPad vs iPad 2: RAM performance in Mobile Safari




As you can see from the video above, the iPad 2 using the Apple A5 chip combined with more RAM performs much better than the original iPad when browsing in Mobile Safari. If you load up all nine tabs, you’ll see that the original iPad starts to choke up pretty badly when compared to the iPad 2. This is due to the original iPad only coming with 256MB of RAM while iPad 2 comes packed with 512MB. (We hoped for as much as 1GB in the video before getting more test results back. Maybe next year!.)

The original iPad tends to “kill” background tabs whenever it runs out of available memory, which can get pretty annoying if you use the iPad primarily for web browsing. The iPad 2 performed flawlessly and had no hiccups when browsing. Also the dreaded “checkerboard effect” — where significant lag would occur before Safari could render the web page content — is nowhere to be found. Scrolling in Safari is smooth as butter, and gone are the days when switching between tabs meant loading the entire page from scratch.

The difference in performance is quite clear, and browsing on the iPad 2 is definitely a step up from the original iPad in every way. If you were able to pick up an iPad 2 then let us know your thoughts on RAM performance and how it compares to the first iPad in the comments below!

iPad 2 Owners Complain of Backlight Bleeding


Numerous reports of blacklight bleeding on the new Apple iPad 2 are surfacing online. Engadget and MacRumors forum users are posting images of their devices online and some have already returned the affected units to Apple.

Engadget notes that this is not to be confused with the yellow tint issue.

The second issue, which is being conflated with the first, is characterized by light bleeding through from the outer edges of the LCD panel. The bleeding is most noticeable when watching a dark scene in a movie or using an app with a black background as demonstrated in the picture above and video embedded after the break. For those affected, the issue can be minimized or exacerbated by adjusting the brightness in settings.

iPhone Used to Hack Times Square Video Billboards?


A new YouTube video demonstrates a hack which purportedly takes over the video display of Times Square's massive screens using an iPhone. CBS posted the story saying, "First off I'm going to state that I do not know if this is in fact real or fake. My gut is telling me it has to be fake... but if it's real, I'm so going to buy one!"

Here's how the poster describes the hack...

"the way it works is pretty simple: plug in my transmitter into the iphone 4 and play back any video clip. you can play it through the ipod feature or through the camera roll. the transmitter instantly sends the video signal to the video repeater and the video repeater overrides any video screen that it's being held next to. it doesn't matter what shape or size the hacked screen is because the hack video will simply keep its correct dimensions and the rest of the hacked space will stay black.

i chose times square for my demo because it has lots of video screens to try it on. it is also one of the most monitored and secured areas in new york city and that made it that much more fun . you can see in my video that the repeater is pretty powerful but the signal is not very stable yet. i'm working on that. i will post a new video later this week explaining how i made this prototype."

Even if the hack is fake, the video is pretty impressive.
