HTC Dream G1 scale mockup reveals design

And the HTC Dream leaks keep on coming. Not that we mind, or anything.

Following on the recent publication of the HTC Dream’s length and width dimensions, courtesy of the FCC, a newly leaked scale wire-frame mockup of the HTC Dream gives us a glimpse of what to expect when the HTC Dream G1 launches in the not-too-distant future.

The rightmost diagram includes measurements that can be applied to the rest of the scale mockups. In doing so, we find that the HTC Dream G1 is likely going to hit somewhere between 16mm and 17mm in thickness. That means the HTC Dream will be portlier than the iPhone but slimmer than the QWERTY-wielding HTC Touch Pro and Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1.

And, adding a little bit of a twist to our HTC Dream-story, the HTC Dream looks to be sporting a bit of a “chin.” The lower-section of the device - below the huge touchscreen (how huge, we still don’t know) - sports a “kicked out” lip. There’s speculation flying around that the HTC Dream will be an “arc slider” with that “chin” tilted toward the user. We’re not sure if the “chin” will make it to final production, and we’re not sure if we like it or not.

So, to sum it up, we know that the HTC Dream will be sporting the long-awaited Android OS, a gloriously high-resolution touchscreen display, super-fast CPU, slide-out QWERTY keyboard, and the regular assortment of high-end accouterments befitting a smartphone of the HTC Dream’s caliber. Now, we have the dimensions of the device - 115 x 55 x ~16.5 mm - and a darn good idea of the HTC Dream G1’s overall design.

Now, the next step is to get one of these badass Android-powered smartphones in our hands. With a little luck, the HTC-gods will drop off an HTC Dream at our doorstep sooner rather than later.

Android Developer Challenge winners announced

Google has wrapped up judging on its very first Android Developer Challenge, and some twenty dev shops (or in some cases, individual developers) are finding themselves considerably richer as a result. Of the fifty apps to make it through to the final round, ten have been awarded $275,000 each and another ten have made off with a cool hundred grand -- good coin for some really good ideas. As you might expect of anything being backed by Google and the Android platform, a good number of the finalists made location-based services an integral theme; take grand prize winner Locale, for example, which automatically switches device settings based on your current location (if that's not a "why didn't we think of that?" kind of product, we don't know what is). The more we scan it, the more we realize that the list of winners reads like a who's-who catalog of apps we know we want installed on our Dreams out of the gate -- and more importantly, it looks like Google has a great way here to encourage best-of-breed Android development over the long run.

Google’s Android Market officially announced

Back in May, we wrote about Google’s apparent plans to introduce an Apple-like AppStore for its Android platform. Well that’s confirmed now, with the official Android Developers Blog posting an article on the subject.

First of all - it’s not a store, it’s a market, because they feel developers should have “an open and unobstructed environment to make their content available” (unlike Apple’s AppStore?). Second, being an open platform means there will be tons of apps available for the users. To help future Android-powered handset owners make decisions, Android Market will have a feedback and rating system similar to YouTube, enabling community to filter things out for the rest of us.

As for the developer, they will be able to quickly put their apps available for the grab — the process is explained as easy as publishing a video on YouTube, consisting of three steps: registration, upload and description of the newly uploaded app. Additionally, Google will provide developers with a “useful dashboard and analytics to help drive their business and ultimately improve their offerings.”

Initially, the first beta version of Android Market will support free apps, only. Paid applications will be added later, and so will be other features like versioning, multiple device profile support, analytics, etc.

HTC's Android-driven Dream revealed in glorious spy photos

Sure, we've seen some blurry videos and a few stolen glimpses when Andy Rubin demonstrated this beast, but now we've gotten our hands on a slew of pictures showing off a very real T-Mobile-branded Dream in all its Android-running glory. Not only does this confirm the design spied in those FCC docs as well as show off that nearly-done version of Android, but it seems to confirm the fact that this will be headed to T-Mobile, and sooner rather than later judging from the looks of the above device. Needless to say, our inner-geeks are completely geeking out right now.

T-Mobile to sell Dream starting late October, sez WSJ

Lining up nicely with most (but not all) of what we've been hearing, the Wall Street Journal is spouting off about some "people familiar with the matter" who are claiming that the Android-christening Dream will go on sale late in the month of October. What's more, these same folks say that we can expect a formal announcement about the worst kept secret in Seattle on September 23, though exact pricing is yet to be determined. That would leave about a month for anticipation -- "Dream Fever," if you will -- to build to a nice, rolling boil, which is important considering rumors that HTC looks to push somewhere between 600,000 and 700,000 Dreams before the year's out. Assuming the sticker shock is kept to a minimum, there's only one question left to be answered: white, black, or brown?

Google shows off masked Android handset

It looks like Google was doing its best to spread Android fever in London this morning, with it taking advantage of its Developer Day event to show off a working Android phone for the first time in Europe. While Google apparently wasn't quite ready to take all the wraps off the suspiciously Dream-like handset itself, PC Pro reports that it looked "far more polished" than it did in earlier leaked videos, and that by all accounts it was actually a "finished commercial device." Google's Mike Jennings was, on the other hand, more than eager to talk about the OS, and he even dropped a tantalizing "why not?" when asked if Android could be used on devices other than phones. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any video of the event available, but you can check out a few first hand reports by hitting up the links below.

Read - TechRadar, "Google shows off final Android handset"

It's official: T-Mobile unveiling first Android handset next Tuesday

So it's really no big secret at this point, but we've now received confirmation that T-Mobile will be unveiling its first Android handset -- presumably the Dream, G1, or whatever they decide to call it -- at a press event in New York City on September 23. The event is a whole shindig, too, kicking off in the morning and featuring "presentations from T-Mobile, Google and other company executives" followed by hands-ons with the real deal. Naturally, we'll be on hand in full force, so stay tuned!

HTC Dream G1 Pricing Details Emerge

New pricing details are coming out today on the HTC G1. Word is that the device will sell for $200 with a new contract. No word if any rebates or other discounts will be available. The G1 will, as I’m sure you know… run on Google’s new Android platform.

For me, the price sounds right. It looks like one heck of a sweet device. I’m simply curious to know what the term of the contract would be, and would actually like to know what the out-of-contract price would be. You never know, I might want to add this one to my growing collection Smiley

What do you think? Is $200 too much to ask? I don’t think so!

T-Mobile G1 (or whatever it's called) takes in some fresh air

Why wait for next Tuesday's grand unveiling? Well, the short answer is that most of us have no other option -- but a small handful of exceptionally lucky individuals are getting their Android on just a little early. This particular example of the G1 (or Dream, Nightmare, Slumber, whatever the hell it's going to end up being called) allegedly hails from a Google staffer, looking a little less... shall we say, "controversial" than other shots have made it out to be. Yeah, we're jealous, we admit. Anyone want to give theirs up for a few hours?
