Google Android phone prototype



At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, on Monday, a select few attendees got an up-close look at prototype phones using Google's Android software. Although the mocked-up handsets were of a piece with BlackBerry-like smartphones that have a full QWERTY keyboard, the ARM9 processor technology in the prototypes is actually used on lower-end, mass-market handsets, meaning the functionality being demonstrated could be done on most phones sold today.

LG aims for Android handsets by 2009



It looks like Android will have more than just its openness and pretty face to show to the world soon. According to a report from Reuters, LG has officially set a time-table for bringing a Google-powered handset to market (and obviously not the phone above). "We will bring it out late in 2008 or early 2009," said Chang Ma, the company's vice president for marketing strategy. The plan sounds shockingly close to competitor Samsung's scheme for a rollout of the Linux phone in early 2009. Clearly, companies are doing more than just putting pen to paper on the platform -- let's just hope those minor kinks get straightened out before the new year.

Samsung to release a "high end" Android powered phone in September?

Robert X. Cringely is claiming that he has information on two upcoming Android powered devices. Both of them are made by Samsung, but are actually Google branded. The "high end" model is supposed to come out in September with a sub $100 (with or without contract?) model expected after Christmas. He goes on to say that both have WiFi built in and might actually come with a built in VoIP client.

Shenanigans? It's only February folks, a lot can happen in 7 months.

Južnokorejska kompanija LG lansiraće 2009. godine mobilni telefon sa čuvenom platformom otvorenog koda "Android" američkog Internet pretraživača "Gugla" (Google).

Telefon s "Androidom" je za 2009. godinu najavila i južnokorejska kompanija "Samsung", dok su neke kompanije - američki "Teksas Instrument" (Texas), japanski NEC, američki proizvodjač telekomunikacione opreme "Kvalkom" (Qualcomm) - čak predstavile prototipove takvih telefona na Svetskom kongresu mobilnih tehnologija održanom u Barseloni.

Nemački operater mobilne telefonije "Ti-mobajl" (T-Mobile) i tajvanska informatička kompanija "Haj tek kompjuter" (High Tech Computer) bi, medjutim, trebalo da preteknu konkurente, jer su oni objavili da nameravaju da već ove godine lansiraju telefone s "Androidom".

Android OS shows new tricks

The Google Android OS is generating more hype the closer we get to its market debut. Therefore when Google's director of mobile platforms Andy Rubin makes a preview of a working device with it there is no way that it will go unnoticed.

From what we see from the video made by BBC (a bit makeshift we should add) the Android might just live up to the expectations of being the best thing since sliced bread. We are not quite sure if all the features are like that but the ones shown on the demo work like a charm.

On the featured demo you will see the Android OS running on a reference device based on the Qualcomm MSM7200 with a 300Mhz processor.

The chipset is gaining popularity with PocketPC manufacturers - it was also in the root of the HTC user upheaval for some reportedly missing video drivers. The Android OS however benefits from the Qualcomm integrated 2D/3D accelerator in a way that the disgruntled HTC users could only wish for - it's playing a Quake demo at 30 fps. Beat that HTC TyTN II. But we digress.
The main benefit from this video demo is that it shows the responsiveness of the Android-powered device. Its web browser is different (and more fluid) from what we saw at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona 2 weeks ago. Furthermore it is the first mobile device to feature the Street View Google application.
