Wing 2 and G2 Coming to T-Mobile Soon?

Our friends over at AllShadow.com are reporting that two new devices will be heading over to T-Mobile soon. First up is the update to T-Mobile's Windows Mobile Professional line to replace the Wing. The new device will sport 3G and UMA for the @Home service. The Android update, or G2 if you will, will have some hardware variations: no keyboards and slimmer hardware buttons. You can read the story over at AllShadow.com.

LG's KS360 to be company's first Android phone?

It was about this time last year when we heard that LG was aiming to push out Android-powered handsets by 2009, and sure enough, it looks like it'll happen by this summer. According to T3, the company's altogether bubbly KS360 will be relaunched with Google's operating system, though the actual specifications (outside of the OS, obviously) will remain the same. Marketing Manager Jeremy Newing also confirmed at Mobile World Congress that LG would be releasing two other Android phones this year, though he wouldn't divulge any model names or favorite colors for us to guess.

Huawei's Android touchphone is a mystery wrapped in an enigma

We were really hoping MWC would be Android's coming out party, but while there's a hefty amount of name-dropping at the show, nobody much seems ready to put hardware on the line. And then there's Huawei. We were expecting a handset from them at the show, and they're halfway there, announcing an Android phone, but only bringing a non-working prototype to show for it. The touchphone hardware is decidedly iPhone-esque, and almost seems too button scarce to work with the traditional Android interface, but that's where the rest of the story comes in: Huawei is working with an "established design consultancy" to develop its own custom interface for the device. The as-yet unnamed phone will be coming to market in Q3 of this year, and Huawei is currently in talks with a carrier who will rebrand the device -- the lack of finality there left much of the rest of the info on this phone shrouded.

#MWC09 Confirmed: Acer is working on Android device in Q4

I just got back from the interview and new device check-up with the Acer.

As far as the new first generation devices (M900, F900, X960 and DX900) go, I’m underwhelmed.They are all pretty well specc’ed out, have nice design and tons of features. And Acer made its own interface for the for touch navigation.

But they all run on WM 6.1, and, contrary to other vendors launching new WM products, Acer does not have any plans to provide free WM6.5 upgrades to first gen handsets.

The touchscreen and UI responsiveness on four new handsets leaves a lot to be desired too, and is not much different from two year old, pre-touch craze WM devices, which is not what I expect from touchscreen phone these days.

Acer is working on the next generation of its touch interface for a number of new WM6.5 handsets (including 4 previewed at MWC). From hardware and design standpoint they look really cool. Let’s hope the software side will catch up soon.

I’ll post video and live pics of all new Acer devices soon, and there’ll also be an interview with Acer’s Senior Corporate VP Aymar de Lencquesaing on UV shortly.

But the news bit I wanted to report now is that Acer’s reps confirmed that they are working on an Android device to be launched in Q4, along with the introduction of other new WM 6.5 Acer handsets.

When I asked Mr. Lencquesaing about other OS’es in Acer’s devices, e.g. Symbian or Android, he confirmed that there will be a non WM Acer device this year, it’ll be based on one of the OS’s I mentioned, and it will not run on Symbian.

Acer rep in their product display area confirmed as much, saying that there will be Android based Acer device in Q4.

Stay tuned for live pics and videos of new Acer products.

Yuhua's Xphone-SDK runs Android, doesn't look like poo

If you enjoyed feasting your eyes on that DSTL1 from General Mobile a couple weeks back, pay extra close attention here. Turns out that phone was designed by Chinese firm Yuhua, and they're back at it with a second Android device -- this time a reference design, seemingly without a distributor lined up -- the Xphone-SDK. We'd argue that this one looks even better than the DSTL1 did (from the renders here, anyway), but the specs suffer, stepping down to just 128MB of RAM and 256MB of ROM on board. As usual, you're left with just EDGE data, though a 3G version is promised down the road -- not to say it matters too much unless a brand decides to pick it up and sell it. What do ya say, General Mobile?

Samsung’s first Android smartphone pictured

Although Samsung’s Android intentions are not a secret anymore, the South Korean giant has still not announced any handset powered by Google’s open source OS.

Well, not officially, because today, during an online event held in Amsterdam, Samsung showcased what seems to be its very first Android smartphone.

The available image shows a full-touch device with rounded edges and some buttons on the lower side. Sadly, the picture quality is simply awful, but hey, at least we now know the handset’s overall aspect.

Details about the features packed by Samsung into its first Android device are scarce. It’s said it has a responsive capacitive touchscreen (of unknown resolution), quad-band GSM connectivity, HSDPA / HSUPA connectivity, a photo camera and memory expansion slot.

Stuff like Google Maps, Gmail and advanced Web browsing capabilities should also be in there – since the smartphone is an Android one.

The handset will most probably be released in Europe and the US, but for the moment there’s no clear info about this.

Samsung S8000 to Pack Android

Samsung had officially acknowledged that they would be putting out three Android handsets this year, and we had seen some blurry hints of the first, but now we’ve got a clear view of the second: the S8000. The specifications, as leaked by Russian reseller Euroset, are:

    * 3.1″ AMOLED WVGA touchscreen
    * 5 megapixel camera with dual LED flash
    * FM radio + RDS
    * 2 GB internal memory and microSD slot
    * 3.5 mm headphone jack3G, Wi-Fi, aGPS
    * 12mm thick
    * DivX andXviD support
    * 3D UI  (S-Class?)

Considering the European source, we might not be seeing this one in North America any time soon, but for those on the other side of the pond, the preorder price was set at 470 euros before the S8000 was taken down. It looks like a very sleek device - borrowing that cube-ish home button from the Ultra Touch was a good move.

Samsung i7500 confirmed as Samsung’s first Android phone?

After the Samsung S8000 was unveiled, many have thought this would be the first-released Android smartphone to bear Sammy’s brand.

But it looks like that’s not true and, instead of the S8000, we’re going to have the i7500 as the first Samsung handset to run on Google’s open source platform.

According to the::unwired, Samsung i7500 will be released in Germany sometime in June, exclusively via O2.

The new Android smartphone is only 11.9 mm thick, it has no hardware keypad and it looks pretty good:

Here’s a list with the rumored specs of Samsung i7500:

    * Android 1.5 (Cupcake)
    * Quad band GSM/GPRS/EDGE connectivity
    * Dual band UMTS/HSPA connectivity
    * 3.2 inch capacitive touchscreen display with HVGA (480 x 320) resolution
    * GPS
    * Wi-Fi
    * Bluetooth
    * 5MP camera with LED flash
    * 3.5mm headset jack
    * 528 MHz Qualcomm MSM7200A CPU
    * 8GB of internal memory
    * MicroSD card support

The retail price of Samsung i7500 is said to be of around €300 ($398) – not that much for a smartphone with features like the ones listed above.

Now let’s wait for some official details to come from Samsung or O2.
