Android Running On Eee PC 1000H



Guess the Android platform is not limited to just T-Mobile's G1 and its ilk, but has been made to run on an Asus Eee PC 1000H, although that does beg the question of "why?". Two guys at VentureBeat found it a snap to get Android up and running on the Eee PC 1000H, even offering the support required for functional computing such as sound, graphics and even Wi-Fi connectivity. This isn't a first though, as a Google developer did manage to get Android running on an Eee PC 701 a few weeks back. Does this mean the age of more affordable MIDs is about to dawn on us that runs on Android? Interesting times are ahead this year for Android, that's as much as we can tell.

Kogan Agora Pro Caught on Video



If you’ve been waiting to see the Kogan Agora Pro running Android in an actual demo, your wait is over. The folks at Kogan (well ok, they’re PR agency) have been distributing the video above to show the device running Android without a hitch. Check out the shiny metal frame/bezel around the display. Man that thing is reflective… Could be a tad annoying? Nothing more than a minor annoyance I’m sure. The device does look pretty solid. Expect more news on the Agora and Agora Pro from Kogan from CES. Will and Simon will be all over it!

Note: I’m used to seeing ‘Mr. Blurrycam’… But in this case we can see it must be one of his cohorts holding the camera. I think it’s ‘Mr. Blurryvideocam’. I think they’re cousins.

Asus to make an Eee phone with Android?

The fact that Asus is planning to release at least one Android handset this year is no longer a surprise.

What might be surprising, though, is that the Taiwanese company also wants to come up with a handset under the Eee brand (you know, those small and affordable notebooks).

And to make it all even more interesting, this Eee Phone might be running on – yes – Android.

TechRadar reports that Johnny Shih, Asus’ CEO, talked about the company’s intention to build easy to use pocket-sized devices that:

    “play MP3s, offer GPS services, work like a PDA and offer Mobile TV altogether.”



Now, if one of these devices is meant to run on Google’s open source OS and if it’s affordable and good looking, it will almost surely be a success. 

Asus has also said it wants to bring Android to its Eee PCs, but I think an Android Eee Phone would be more interesting to see.

Video: coder whips up working multitouch demonstration on T-Mobile G1



Ryan Gardner did wonders when he proved that multitouch was a real possibility on the G1, and now Sir Luke Hutch has taken things one giant leap further. Put simply (or as simply as possible), he has figured out a way to demonstrate full working multitouch on a stock T-Mobile G1, and he even provides the video to prove it and a list of instructions for developers to follow suit. For those just casually interested, the vid after the break is apt to be enough to get your saliva flowing, but for the hardcore data snoopers in the crowd, the incredibly lengthy read link is where it's at. Go where you must -- it's like a choose-your-own-adventure book, but for nerds.

Skype Launches on Android, Java Handsets



At CES Skype announced a lite version of their app featuring basic functions like Skype-to-Skype calls, instant messaging, outbound and inbound calling, and contact viewing on over 100 Java-based phones and Android. That seems to be the lion’s share of what Skype is used for, and getting onto the Android bandwagon just as apps are going premium is a smooth move, since they’ll be able to easily offer subscription and pay-as-you-go options right through the device. iPhone and BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM), however, will see a tougher time getting their Skype clients in action due to restrictive carrier relationships. In the meantime, the free beta should be available in the Android Market, while those with Java handsets should go to www.skype.com/go/mobiledownload to get started.

Dream G2 Shows Android with Graffiti Text, Stylus Support (VIDEO)

We happened across a video this evening which shows the Dream G2 phone. You know, the one coming from China… The one that looks like it would end up more fantasy or nightmare. Well it looks like it’s a little more tangible than we expected.

Watch this 7 minute video and check out some features and software running with Android that have yet to make their debut here in the US.  We’re jealous of things like Google Reader, Notebook, and Docs.  These are the perfect Google apps to bring out to show everyday folks the type of services available on an Android handset.

One thing we’re not too jealous of is the use of a stylus.  Yeah, graffiti input is nice and all, but didn’t we just put our stylus back in the box in 2008?  Obviously there’s need for some additional help for typing since the handset lacks a physical keyboard.

The Dream G2 does seem to be responsive and quite fast as well.  Did anyone catch the Android charger?  Man, how bad do we want one of those!

Kogan Agora is “delayed indefinitely” - QVGA resolution too small for Android?

After Kogan Agora’s official announcement, many Australian mobile users were happy, thinking that they would have the chance to buy the world’s second Android smartphone at a reasonable price.

Unfortunately, the Agora will not be available too soon, although Kogan initially said the handset would ship starting January 29 2009.

The Australian company now says that the Android smartphone “has to be delayed indefinitely”. The main reason for this is Agora’s screen resolution: 240 x 320 pixels, which, apparently, isn’t compatible with some Android applications.



In consequence, Kogan will try to re-make the smartphone, but there’s no word on when they intend to finish and finally release it.

Well, at least we know that the handset will have a bigger screen.

Those who pre-ordered the smartphone, thus paying without getting it, will receive their money back, Kogan said.

Leaked T-Mobile G2 pics unveil a thin, keyboardless smartphone

Believe it or not, images with what looks to be the real T-Mobile G2 smartphone have just leaked onto the Web.

Like the G1, T-Mobile G2 is built by HTC. Unlike the G1, when it comes to design, the G2 resembles the Touch 3G. And I guess that’s a good thing.

You may or may not expect this, but the new Android handset has no physical keyboard. in consequence, it’s thinner than the G1.

Currently, there are no details about the features of G2, save for the fact that it sports a 3.2MP camera, most probably with autofocus.

It’s said that the smartphone could hit the market in May 2009, so let’s wait and see if this turns out to be true.
