Četrdeset posto svetske proizvodnje mobilnih telefona proizvedeno u Kini

Record high sales of LG Viewty in Europe

LG Electronics has announced that LG-KU990 Viewty showed record high sales (310,000 units) since its launch on the European market. The European sales started in November 2007. According to LG, daily sales in Europe (the UK, France and Germany) were 6300 units. So LG Viewty record outpaced that of LG Chocolate and LG Shine. The company expects the Viewty to succeed on other market – the company has just launched shipments to Asia and Middle East.
I’d remind you that the official announcement of LG-KU990 Viewty was late in August 2007. This is a successor to LG Prada – equipped with a big touchscreen and has no buttons. At the same time the device stands out for a high quality camera – 5-megapixel with xenon flash and Schneider-Kreuznach lens.

Sony Ericsson World View picks a global winner

Sony Ericsson have announced the global winner in their World View 2007 photo contest. The World View competition allows cameraphone "photographers" from selected countries to participate with their entries with the hope of winning the grand prize - GBP 10,000 worth of an all-expense-paid trip for two.

A Chinese entry won the competition this year, much like last year. However, as opposed to last year's winner, this year we don't find the top photo to be compelling enough to even win the first round. It's always a matter of personal taste and having some experience in similar photo contests, we know how much junk photos people are sending, but yet we cannot accept the photo in question as a leading entry.

A total of 24 countries participated this year with a total of some 14 000 entries submitted. You can take a look at some other entries that caught our attention - those are some of the best, selected by the competition jury themselves.

You can find out more about the World View contest by visiting the dedicated Sony Ericsson website. And just for your reference, here is last year's World View global winner - again from China.

Interesting Nokia handset concept
with fingerprint-scanning display?

Did you ever play with magnets as a kid? I am just not sure about you, but Nokia definitely likes to play with magnets Wink

Actually to be precise, Nokia is seriously is thinking about making its charging and headset ports magnetic, just like Apple's MagSafe ports on its laptops although with a bit different functionality.

That’s right! Nokia has filed another patent for using the magnets on cable jacks as well as on the connectors on the phone side to prevent inserting the wrong jack in the wrong port.

The idea is quite simple, the charging port would be polarised opposite to the headset port and it will be the same with respective cables so basically it will be impossible to plug the wrong plug into the inappropriate jack.

Great idea although to be honest I am not that impressed as I haven't problems with outing the right thing on the right place LOL

The patent also mentions that it would also help to avoid dust from settling into these ports as well as provide strong and more secure connection. Day by day, patent by patent, Nokia Research Labs have driven impressive gains in productivity lately.

Motorola Z12 handset with Kodak 5-megapixel camera

The Chinese-language IT168 has posted a picture of a new Motorola’s mobile phone with a 5-megapixel camera by Kodak. According to the source, this is a slider called X PIXL Z12. The new model has been already mentioned as a part of Motorola 2008 roadmap. The company has really reamed up with Kodak to add a 5-megapixel camera with xenon flash. We don’t know for sure whether the photo was true or it was just a presentation based image. At least, we have a slight imagination of Motorola Z12 phone.

New Li-Ion Battery Holds 10-Times
the Charge of Current Batteries
Photos taken by a scanning electron microscope of silicon nanowires before (top) and after (bottom) absorbing lithium. Both photos were taken at the same magnification.

Sure, some of the news and discussion that you can find here aren’t strictly related to the main theme of this blog, but in my personal opinion any news related to improving the battery life is interesting to any mobile user including Symbian Freaks, especially if you own an Nokia N95 or any other well equipped Symbian phone with weighty battery that takes up lot of space and still can’t provide enough energy for using phone on a higher activity level unfortunately.

Anyway, Stanford researchers have found a way to use silicon nanowires to significantly boost the power of rechargeable lithium-ion batteries - such as the ones used in mobile phones. The new version, developed through research led by Yi Cui, assistant professor of materials science and engineering, produces 10 times the amount of electricity of existing lithium-ion, known as Li-ion, batteries.

A laptop that now runs on battery for two hours could operate for 20 hours. "It's not a small improvement," Cui said. "It's a revolutionary development."

The breakthrough is described in a paper, "High-performance lithium battery anodes using silicon nanowires," published online Dec. 16 in Nature Nanotechnology, written by Cui, his graduate chemistry student Candace Chan and five others.

The greatly expanded storage capacity could make Li-ion batteries attractive to electric car manufacturers. Cui suggested that they could also be used in homes or offices to store electricity generated by rooftop solar panels.

"Given the mature infrastructure behind silicon, this new technology can be pushed to real life quickly," Cui said.

The electrical storage capacity of a Li-ion battery is limited by how much lithium can be held in the battery's anode, which is typically made of carbon. Silicon has a much higher capacity than carbon, but also has a drawback.

Silicon placed in a battery swells as it absorbs positively charged lithium atoms during charging, then shrinks during use (i.e., when playing your iPod) as the lithium is drawn out of the silicon. This expand/shrink cycle typically causes the silicon (often in the form of particles or a thin film) to pulverize, degrading the performance of the battery.

Cui's battery gets around this problem with nanotechnology. The lithium is stored in a forest of tiny silicon nanowires, each with a diameter one-thousandth the thickness of a sheet of paper. The nanowires inflate four times their normal size as they soak up lithium. But, unlike other silicon shapes, they do not fracture.

Research on silicon in batteries began three decades ago. Chan explained: "The people kind of gave up on it because the capacity wasn't high enough and the cycle life wasn't good enough. And it was just because of the shape they were using. It was just too big, and they couldn't undergo the volume changes."

Then, along came silicon nanowires. "We just kind of put them together," Chan said.

For their experiments, Chan grew the nanowires on a stainless steel substrate, providing an excellent electrical connection. "It was a fantastic moment when Candace told me it was working," Cui said.

Cui said that a patent application has been filed. He is considering formation of a company or an agreement with a battery manufacturer. Manufacturing the nanowire batteries would require "one or two different steps, but the process can certainly be scaled up," he added. "It's a well understood process."

Release Gets Delayed, Again
N-Gage First Access Delayed for the Next Year!!

This is getting really annoying, we have expected that long awaited new N•Gage platform will be finally released this week but unfortunately guys over at dedicated Nokia N•Gage blog just surprised me with the news that ‘Gage has been delayed yet again. Again!?!?? WTF?!??

Am I dreaming, I just can’t believe this is true, even worse it is not prolonged for the next week, it is prolonged for the next year without precise release date!!!

Unexpected and difficulties problems after years and years of extensive internal testing, c’mon guys, what is going on!?

This delay leaves Nokia without its major holiday release and I just can’t believe that this happens. How long is Nokia expecting us to wait, we want games for holidays not after the holidays?

Actually I am totally shocked and speechless, shame on you Nokia
