Mobilna izdanja Mozilla softvera Mozilla je objavila da uvećava napore da donese nove softverske platforme na mobilna tržišta, uključujući i mobilnu verziju popularnog Firefox pretraživača. Predstavnik inženjeringa Mike Schroepfer je objavio na zvaničnom blogu da je doneta strateška odluka u vezi sa ovim zbog toga što "je pravi trenutak za tako nešto". On je naveo da su do pre izvesnog vremena ograničenja od strane samog hardvera drastično otežavala razvoj mobilnih aplikacija i da je zbog toga bilo neophodno pisati od nule, što sada više nije neophodno. Mozilla se opredelila za cross-platform pristup i smatra da je to ispravan put, dodao je on. Kompanija planira da poveća broj članova razvojnih timova za mobilne aplikacije. Trenutno je mobilna verzija Mozilla softvera dostupna za Nokia N800 mobilni telefon, koji je istovremeno neka vrsta test platforme. Schroepfer je rekao da će u bliskoj budućnosti spisak podržanih naprava biti proširen.

S60 Touch Interface Launched  October 16th 2007 Today at the Symbian Smartphone Show Nokia showed S60 running with a touch interface. The touch interface will support both finger and stylus input, has full multi lingual support, has support for tactile feedback (haptics) and is backwardly compatible with the existing S60 platform. S60 announcement about future technologies at the Symbian Smartphone Show revolved around three areas:

StyleTap: the software Palm OS soon compatible with the smartphones Symbian The Canadian company StyleTap has proposed for a few years already a software - paying - allowing to use a part of the applications Palm OS on a smartphone or PDA under Windows Mobile. This emulator Palm OS is compatible with the programs developed on the platform Garnet OS (5.2 and inferior).

This time the company announces that it is more than 20 000 applications Garnet OS which will be soon compatible with the smartphones Symbian S60 and UIQ. According to Gregory Sokoloff, the CEO of StyleTap, that will have two consequences. The first will make it possible to use more applications on a smartphone Symbian and the second will make it possible the developers to be focused on only one platform to see their compatible applications Symbian OS and Windows Mobile.

Side availability of the solution, StyleTap hopes to be able to start to sell its software in the current of the first quarter 2008. The price was not finalized yet but the named platform "StyleTap CrossPlatform" will be compatible with the terminals under Symbian S60 3rd edition and UIQ 3.0 only. Coming soon: NSBasic for S60 and UIQ

Following on from the news that StyleTap is currently porting its Palm OS application emulator to Symbian comes news that NS Basic (a popular BASIC langauge for the Palm OS) will use the StyleTap technology to enable NS Basic applications to run on S60 3rd Edition and UIQ 3 devices.

The first betas should be available before the end of the year. In the S60 version a virtual mouse will be used to emulate touch screen capabilities and to allow the user to interface with the application.

There is, of course, a comparison to be drawn with OPL. OPL was Psion's much loved BASIC like language that struggled to survive the transition to Symbian (it was open sourced, but is not available for the more recent devices). It will be interesting to see what the level of demand for this amongst developers.

Interesting Nokia Slider Concept?!?





Pretty busy days for folks over the Nokia research labs, they are very productive nowadays and just surprised us with another QERTY slider concept.

Also we've had some forum discussions related to slider Nokia phone with QWERTY keyboard and large screen but it was obviously just a nice Photoshop work with some really bizarre solution and or even terrifying ideas in my personal opinion.

As usually, patenting generally makes the details of new technology publicly available and according to a new patent filing, Nokia is indeed working on some kind of the slider phone with QWERTY keyboard and the very big dominating screen which means that this patent is most probably related to the upcoming Touch UI devices.

The specification and drawings present a new apparatus and method for applying a turn and slide concept for opening and closing a device. A turning part of the device can rotate around a pivotal axis in an angle range, e.g., from a first position to a second position by a predetermined angle, the turning part is being pivotally connected to a first part (e.g., a base) of the device, thus opening the device by sliding a second part (e.g., a lid) from an initial position to a further position using an adjusting mechanism.

The first part may comprise a first functional area and the second part may comprise a second functional area located on an exposed surface of the second part, wherein the second part is configured to cover the first functional area in the initial position and to reveal the first functional area in the second position.



FIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0001] The present invention relates to compact devices, and more specifically to applying a turn and slide concept for opening and closing the device.

BACKGROUND ART

[0002] Various devices (e.g., computers, mobile phones) comprise a processor, memory, circuitry, keyboard (typically with QWERTY), a display, etc. In portable computers, for example, the display is typically attached to the computer base by a hinge forming a single pivot axis, wherein the display can be folded down for carrying or up so that the user can select an appropriate viewing angle.

DISCLOSURE OF THE INVENTION

[0003] According to a first aspect of the invention, a device, comprises: a first part comprising a first functional area; a second part comprising a second functional area located on an exposed surface of the lid; and a turning part, pivotally connected to the first part such that the turning part is configured to turn by rotating around a pivotal axis in an angle range, wherein the second part is in an initial position and configured to cover the first functional area when the turning part is in a first position and wherein the second part is configured to slide using an adjusting mechanism to a further position revealing the first functional area when the turning part is rotated by a predetermined angle in the angle range around the pivotal axis to a second position.

[0004] According further to the first aspect of the invention, the second functional area may be a display comprising a viewing surface and the first functional area may be a keyboard.

[0011] Yet still further according to the first aspect of the invention, the second part, when in the initial position, may be substantially parallel to the first functional area of the first part, and the second part, when in the further position, may form a predetermined angle with the first functional area of the first part.

[0014] According to a second aspect of the invention, a method, comprises: rotating a turning part of a device, the rotating part being pivotally connected to a first part of the device, from a first position to a second position by a predetermined angle around a pivotal axis, thus opening the device by sliding a second part from an initial position to a further position, thus opening the device, wherein the first part comprises a first functional area, the second part comprises a second functional area located on an exposed surface of the second part, the turning part is configured to turn by rotating around the pivotal axis in a pre-selected angle range and wherein the second part is configured to cover the first functional area in the initial position and the second part is configured to reveal the first functional area in the second position.

[0027] According to a fourth aspect of the invention, a turning part module of a device, comprises: a grasping part, pivotally connected to a first part of the electronic device such that the turning part module is configured to turn by rotating the grasping part by a user around a pivotal axis in an angle range, wherein the first part of the electronic device comprises a first functional area; a second part of the electronic device comprises a second functional area located on an exposed surface of the lid, and the second part is in an initial position and configured to cover the first functional area when the grasping part is in a first position and wherein the second part is configured to slide using an adjusting mechanism to a further position revealing the first functional area when the grasping part is rotated by a predetermined angle in the angle range around the pivotal axis to a second position; and a groove, adjacent to the second part and the second part is configured to have a pin on a second part side adjacent to the turning part, such that when the grasping part is rotated between the first position and the second position, the second part is moved between the initial position covering the first functional area and the further position which reveals the first functional area using the pin which is configured to move along the groove.
