LG najavio najtanji telefon
Petak, 11. april 2008. 16:11

BenQ T60: 8.9 millimeters, 3.2 megapixels

LG may be about to deliver the thinnest device at 5 megapixels, but at 8.9mm, BenQ's new T60 is holding down the 3.2 megapixel camp with some serious hotness. The slick candybar features a 2.2 inch QVGA display, "high quality media player" (whatever that means), integrated radio, 24MB of onboard memory, and microSD expansion -- you know, for actually making the camera and music player useful. BenQ's touting the whole package as being "affordable," too, which makes sense considering that the data flow appears to top off at measly GPRS speeds. Look for it to launch in Taiwan, Turkey, and Bangladesh this month -- quite a hodgepodge of countries if you ask us -- this month.

OpenMoko FreeRunner to be available for $399 - Open-source Linux handset set to launch

Fans of the OpenMoko Neo1973 open-source Linux handset will be glad to hear that they'll soon be able to get their hands on the Neo1973's successor in the near future. The OpenMoko FreeRunner sports a faster processor than its predecessor and adds three-axis motion sensors to the mix. As we saw previously, the overall aesthetic of the FreeRunner is largely unchanged from the Neo1973, and the glorious VGA touchscreen, Bluetooth 2.0, WiFi, and microSD card slot also make the cut.

The FreeRunner should alleviate the open-source Linux handset-drought caused by dried-up  OpenMoko Neo1973 supplies. OpenMoko is considering its production options and will hopefully start shipping the $399 FreeRunner by month's end. There will only be one version of the FreeRunner for sale - a departure from the Neo1973's availability in basic and advanced trim options.

If you're in the market for 10 or more FreeRunners, OpenMoko will even hook you up with a per-unit price of $369.

Motorola Q9h beats Apple iPhone in text messaging tests

What's this? Another usability study? A recent study found that the heralded Apple iPhone takes a back seat to the Motorola Q9h in SMS text messaging prowess, among other things. Good Housekeeping Research Institute took 11 QWERTY keyboard-packed handsets with subsidized (after 2-year contract) retail prices of $300 or less and pit them against the $400 iPhone in a test of text messaging ease, speed of delivery, battery life, voice quality, and ease of placing a voice call.

The results? Well, not unexpectedly, the T-Mobile BlackBerry Curve scored top billing as the fastest to send and receive SMS text messages. The battery life of the BlackBerry Curve was also noted as top notch. And, the iPhone took a back seat, in terms of text messaging ease, to the Windows Mobile 6.0-powered Motorola Q9h. The study noted that users liked the Moto Q9h's large, easy to read display and voice quality.

First off, I'm playing with my Motorola Q9h loaded with Windows Mobile 6.1 right now. Let me just say that Windows Mobile 6.1 really dresses up the long-in-the-tooth Windows Mobile 6.0 interface and brings some serious functionality improvements - like threaded SMS text messaging. In terms of text messaging speed (sending/receiving), the iPhone and Motorola Q9h are on par with each other - neither is BlackBerry Curve-fast, but they're both on the same level. Battery lives on the iPhone and Q9h are relatively similar with similar usage. But how about ease of use for text messages?

I'm going to have to disagree (surprise, right?) with the study. The iPhone's SMS text messaging application is so much easier to access and start-up (not to mention actually tracking past text messages) than its Windows Mobile 6.0 counterpart - keep in mind, WM6.1 improves the UI and makes text messaging even easier. In terms of hardware, the on-screen keyboard on the iPhone allows for much faster typing speeds than the Motorola Q9h. Granted, the iPhone's keyboard takes some getting used to, but thanks to the on-the-fly error correction I think the iPhone's keyboard allows for faster text input. I've said it before and I'll say it again - I can type faster on the iPhone than any other QWERTY-toting handset, and I'm sure I'm not alone.

Still, the keyboard on the Motorola Q9h does have great tactile feedback and the keys are well laid out. If only the Q9h had the web-browsing and user interface prowess of the Apple iPhone…

Finally, the Buddha Phone

We'll admit, there's something strangely intriguing about the over-the-top design put forth by this gilded, Buddha-themed candybar turning up in the streets of Shenzhen. The shell is alleged to be stainless steel with a 24 karat gold plating -- though we suspect that might only be true of the engraving on the back -- and not a single square inch of the thing has been left without some sort of intricate detail that you're not going to find on your average Nokia or Samsung. No proper Buddha phone would be complete without a microSD slot or a touchscreen, of course, and this example is no exception; it also seems that the phone has been blessed by a monk, so you shouldn't have much trouble with evil spirits taking residence in your decidedly materialistic purchase. Seriously, how can you go wrong with a keypad that fancy?

Dutch treat: Samsung surprises with three reveals

Letting the Instinct bask in the limelight back at CTIA earlier this month, Samsung has gone and saved a three-pack of fancy new phones for Dutch show Televisie 2008 this week. First up, the U800 (pictured) is the latest Ultra Edition piece, and at 9.8mm thick, the candybar appears ready for the job -- not to say the 3.2 megapixel camera or 3G radio hurt much, either.

Next, the L870 represents Samsung's newest S60 entry, seemingly slotting in under the N95-killing G810 but still managing to offer a full 3 megapixels on the cam along with Bluetooth, 3G, and quadband GSM. Give us triband HSDPA here, Samsung, and we can be besties forever.

Finally, the long-rumored i900 finally gets some face time, looking ripe to take on LG's fashionable KS20 with UMTS (HSDPA too, if we had to wager a guess), a full 5 megapixels of shooting power, WiFi, and Windows Mobile 6.1. No word yet on when we might be seeing any of these outside the safe confines of a trade show floor, but at least we know they're all real now.

Samsung i900 Tactile-Only Phone

Ok, one last Samsung phone for the next few hours… The i900 is another attempt to create a touch-phone that runs Windows Mobile 6.1. We know that there is a 5 Megapixel camera, but from what we can see there is no sliding keyboard similar to the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1. I’m curious to see what the user interface look like.
Highlights

    * 5 Megapixel Digital Camera
    * GSM/3G
    * WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0
    * USB 2.0
    * 112x56x13mm

TAG Heuer's €3,400 Meridiist handset gets official

Surely those rumored shots of TAG Heuer's luxurious first handset from last week are still stuck in your head, right? Go on and purge those puppies right on out, as we've got the very first press shots (more in the read link) of the now-official Meridiist to focus our attention on. Reportedly, the handset was indeed developed in partnership with Modelabs, and beyond the all-metal casing, you can also expect a sapphire crystal screen, 2-megapixel camera, multimedia player, 1.9-inch QVGA display, Bluetooth and a battery good for 7-hours of yappin' aimlessly about how pricey your new mobile is. Speaking of which, did we mention this prized piece will run you between €3,400 ($5,420) and €3,900 ($6,216), depending on customizations, when it sashays onto the scene in Q2? Yeah, ouch.

First quad-band GSM watch phone with Windows CE 5.0

There really seems to be a market for these GSM watch phones. At least, it seems that way from the myriad manufacturers that are rushing to push watches that double as GSM cellphones.

The latest watch phone to float its way to the top of the mobile industry news cycle is the EPOQ watch phone. Not only does this Alligator-skinned watch sport a quad-band GSM radio, the spec-sheet boast a grocery list of impressive features. The watch is powered by a 266Mhz ARM CPU running Windows Mobile CE 5.0 and packs in a SIM card slot, MP3/MP4 player, 1.3 megapixel camera, microSD card slot, and WiFi underneath a 1.45-inch touchscreen display. And, for the super-dexterous, the display touts handwriting recognition.

Skype, MSN, and other apps come pre-loaded on the handset watch. And, the box includes a Bluetooth headset, two (2) batteries, memory card, earphones, charger, and data cable. Should the watch crap out on you, there's a 1-year parts/90-day labor warranty.

For what it's worth, the watch's spec-sheet is "tentative." That could mean more features will be packed into the watch before launch, or it could mean that some of the more impressive features could get the ax. You'll have to wait until April 25 and save up $629.95 to get your hands on one of these Windows Mobile watch phones.
