Qualifying Conundrum…

Tomorrow night the curtain shall fall on the qualification process for Euro 2008, yet there is still ample room for a dramatic last-minute twist in the script.

The fates of most of qualifying groups have already been decided, but Group A’s ending still offers various permutations. Such an uncertain scenario is sure to hook the interest of the avid fan who subscribes to the theatre of football. 

Still, there are some certainties. On the back of a near faultless qualifying campaign in which they collected an impressive 27 points, Poland have already secured their ticket to Austria and Switzerland next summer.

However, it is the race for the all-important qualification confirming second-placed spot that draws the audience’s attention. 

Currently, Portugal occupy the coveted second position on 26 points. But if Finland, who lay third in the group 23 points, can go to Lisbon and beat Felipe Scolari’s boys tomorrow then they shall overtake them in the qualification stakes due to a superior head-to-head record.

However, if that was to occur, Finland would only be in the driving seat heading towards qualification and not actually over the finishing line. For if Finland beat Portugal, but Serbia (20 points) beat Poland and what should be a run-of-the-mill delayed home match against Kazakhstan on Saturday, then Serbia leapfrog both the Finns and the Portuguese to claim the silver medal in Group A.

This is all due to the fact that by UEFA rules, teams that finish level on points shall be decided by their head-to-head records. Serbia have superior head to head records with both Finland and Portugal, meaning that they're in an advantageous position already in that respect, if not in terms of points.

Of course, for Serbia and its legion of fanatical fans, they will once again have to rely on the good graces of another team, but as the qualification rounds have already proved elsewhere to remarkable effect, football has a way of providing a tense, gripping and often extraordinary finale.

pa kad se 99% utakmica igra u BG i NS .Kada bi se setalo po zemlji malo interesantnije bi bilo. Licno nisam otisao na tekmu protiv bosne recimo jer me mrzelo da se klackam do bg iz nisa (a nisam jedini). Razmazili su bg i ns tim tekmama a jug i ostatak zemlje place za sportskim dogadjajem.

A gde bi se igralo u Nisu?

Ma videcete svi vi kad sutra Finska otrese Portugal i mi prodjemo na prvenstvo . Sto se tice igranja rteprezentativnih utakmica negde u unutrasnjosti mislim da ideja nije losa samo ne znam koliko gradova ima odgovarajuce stadione.
