 Espanyol squander chance to move up

 MADRID: Espanyol squandered the chance to move up to second place in the Primera Liga, at least overnight, when they were held to a 2-2 draw at Real Mallorca on Saturday and the Barcelona-based side remain in fifth.

 Mallorca’s Juan Arango opened the scoring after just two minutes when the Venezuelan striker volleyed home a free-kick from Ariel Ibagaza.

Arango then went from hero to villain 18 minutes later when he headed Luis Garcia’s free-kick into his own net.

 Having lost their lead, Mallorca then seemed to lose their heads and six minutes later Sergio Ballesteros hacked down Espanyol’s Raul Tamudo and the Spanish international striker gave the visitors the lead from the penalty spot.

 Ballesteros was also sent off for the foul, the 11th red card of his career which makes him the most dismissed player currently in the Spanish First Division, but Espanyol couldn’t capitalise from having a one man advantage.

 The numbers were evened up early in the second half when Espanyol leftback Clemente Rodriguez was booked for the second time after 55 minutes.

 Arango nearly redeemed himself in the eyes of the home supporters, who had loudly whistled their team off at half-time, when he hit the post after 67 minutes.

Two minutes later, Mallorca did get back on level terms when Daniel Guiza hammered home an Arango pass.

 However, the hard-earned point which moved Mallorca up to sixth was not enough to stop the majority of the home crowd barracking their own players for the second time as they left the field at the end of the game.

 
    Madrid And Espanyol Discuss Riera, Soldado And Saviola

 Espanyol and Real Madrid directors discussed the possibility of Albert Riera heading to the Spanish capital and either Roberto Soldado or Javier Saviola heading the other way at the weekend.
 
 In a pre-match dinner in Barcelona, the clubs' board members revealed their admiration for each other's players and three names came to the fore, according to AS.

 Riera's purple patch for both club and country has not gone unnoticed and Madrid inquired about the player's buy-out clause, which stands at €24m, but were told his official asking price is €20m.

 The report does state that the left-sided midfielder, who scored for Spain on his debut and against Madrid later the same evening, is not officially on Madrid's wanted list for next season.

Ramón Calderón is said to have enquired as part of his scheme to sign more Spanish players for the squad.

 In response, Espanyol asked about a possible loan deal for Soldado in the winter transfer window and were told that there could be a possibility of a deal.

The Catalan outfit are still after another striker after allowing Walter Pandiani to join Osasuna in the summer.

 Soldado made his first appearance of the season in the defeat in Montjuïc and has previously stated that he could leave if he is not given more minutes this term.

 Benfica are said to be interest, but it is thought that Soldado would welcome the chance to stay in the Spanish top flight over a move abroad.

 Interest in Saviola was met with a much cooler response, as Madrid's directors explained that the coaching staff are delighted with Argentinian and see him as part of their long-term plans.

 Espanyol wanted Saviola when he was at FC Barcelona two seasons ago and were infuriated that he was loaned to Sevilla, despite stating that he wanted to join Los Periquitos.

Tamudo Backs Catalunya National Team 

Espanyol captain Raul Tamudo has thrown his weight behind the campaign for an officially-mandated Catalunya national football team...


Espanyol and Spain striker Raul Tamudo added his voice to the campaign for a FIFA-recognised Catalunya football team.

The Catalonia autonomous team already exists and generally plays at least one match a year; most recently, a squad containing the likes of Recreativo's Gerard Lopez, Barcelona's Albert Jorquera and Ajax's Albert Luque drew 2-2 with a Basque XI in late 2006.

However, the call for an official team to compete in FIFA and UEFA tournaments is growing louder, with Catalan-born Tamudo agreeing.

"Clearly, I'd like that Catalonia could compete," he said.

"Catalonia has always shown a high quality of footballer.

"I'm convinced that we'd do well in international competition; in fact, we've seen that in the matches that we've played."

However, the all-time highest Espanyol goalscorer exercised caution.

In what could be a politically-charged atmosphere, he insisted that any given player must be able to choose his association without any threats or punishments.

As for himself, he wouldn't hint one way or the other.

"Throughout my football career, no matter where I've been called, I've always represented with enthusiasm my teams," he said.

"And so have many other Catalan players, not just me."

Tamudo captained the Catalan XI against Brazil in 2004 as the Selecció lost out 5-2 to Brazil's Seleção, declaring this his proudest moment in the black and yellow.

Raul, who recently received a recall to the Spain national team, is eagerly awaiting a rematch with the Basque Country in December, recognising that fixture congestion often renders these matches hard to arrange.

"The season is intense, and that complicates everything," he said.

Catalonia has had a national football team since 1912, but it competed only fitfully after 1916, with spells of activity mostly in the 20s, 30s and 70s. Since its 1997 revival, the squad has competed on 13 occasions.

 Espanyol chief: Barcelona want Valverde

Espanyol chief Sebastian Javier admits they face a battle to hang onto their highly-rated coach Ernesto Valverde.

After confirming interest from rival clubs in Valverde, Javier was asked about reports linking his coach with Barcelona.

"(Barca sports director Txiki) Begiristain knows what's good, and Valverde is it. I want them to leave us alone. There are many good trainers, they should leave Valverde where he is," said Javier.

"Ernesto will continue at Espanyol, he has a contract until 2009, is very happy and we are with him."

  Kameni: I Want To Play For A Major Club, Even Barça

Carlos Kameni has revealed that he dreams of playing for one of Europe's biggest clubs and even named Espanyol's arch rivals FC Barcelona as a team he would love to join.
 
The Cameroonian international has been linked to several major teams after impressing with los Periquitos and he is delighted to have attracted their attention.

Despite listing the clubs he fancies playing for, Kameni also stated that he is still has plenty left to achieve with Espanyol before he thinks about leaving.

"The start of my career was so tough that I'm absolutely thrilled with what's happening to me now," he told fifa.com.

"I've still got my dreams of course, and I picture myself playing the Champions League, winning the World Cup and playing for one of Europe's big teams.

"Manchester United, Arsenal, Milan, Inter, Real Madrid or Barcelona; it would be an honour to play for any of them."

Kameni was then asked whether his desire to play for Barça would upset Espanyol supporters, but he admitted that attraction of a move across the Catalan capital would to be hard to resist.

"I don't think the fans would be too happy about that," he joked. "But you know, I'm a professional footballer and Barcelona is a great club. So if the chance comes up, then why not?"

From a young age Kameni wanted to play at the highest level and after tasting life in Spain, he has admitted that the Premiership and Serie A are still attractive to him.

"I'd always wanted to play in one of the world's big leagues. Having hopes and dreams keeps me going and I've always aimed to be among the best;" he explained.

"Spain wasn't a specific goal of mine, though. I was always attracted to the idea of playing in England and Italy as well."

To pacify Espanyol though, the custodian explained that before he even thought about joining another team he wants to help Espanyol to a top four finish.

"Our dream is to qualify for the UEFA Champions League," he continued. "The way I see it you have to really believe in your dreams and work hard to make them come true.

"I don't think it's out of the question for us to be in the top four places by the end of the season and to make it into the competition."
