Mancini, is there anything positive at the end of this strange week?
"The positive thing is that we have a match to play against Reggina. A match should always be fun so it's definitely a positive thing."

A comment on Adriano's declarations?
"I don't want to say anything about his declarations because I don't think it's right. I will just say one thing about something that concerns me directly: that I apparently put him on the pitch in the derby when he wasn't fully fit. I'm sorry he said this because after training on Thursday morning I spoke with Adriano and asked him how he was. He told me he was okay. I told him to be careful, against our interests, because if he wasn't in top form and had got hurt in the derby he could also have put his World Cup chances at risk. He confirmed to me he was fine so I delayed making my decisions until the final training session on the day of the match to see if he could play. I wanted to point this out. I don't want to enter into all the rest, I would just like to talk about tomorrow's match."

Continuing on the subject of Adriano, can you still consider a 24-year-old player as young and put things down to errors of youth?
"You're still young at twenty-four years old. Besides, each person matures at different times, we're all different."

Adriano said yesterday he feels he is Inter's most important player. Do you agree?
"I have already said that I don't want to talk about these things, otherwise a few words in one of my sentences will be reported in a different way. I have been talking about Adriano for twenty months and I always say the same things. I say he is fundamental, that he is Inter's most important player and the only player who can get us to win. But let's talk about other things today. We can't always say the same things."

Do you notice the fact that the rapport between Adriano and Juan Sebastian Veron doesn't have the same serenity as those between other players?
"In a group of twenty-five people with different minds, and different nationalities, you can get two people who don't go out to dinner together every evening. But I think that these twenty-five people have the same objective: to honour the Inter shirt in the best possible way. This is the only goal a team should have. You can get two people who don't have dinner together every evening, but I don't think this is a big problem."

Why hasn't Adriano been called up for the Reggina game?
"You spoke with Adriano yesterday... I believe Adriano is not okay. He's not here today. I believe he's with (Inter chief of medical staff) Dr Combi for a check-up."



Where do you find the motivations to finish off this season in the best possible way and threaten Milan's second place?
"There are always many motivations for a match of football. Each of us has to find them because they are there every time. No one wants to play to lose and make a bad impression. We still have four matches from now until the end of the season, we have the points available so let's see what happens. We will try to do well because we have to."

Are you thinking of using one striker against Reggina like you did in the derby?
"There are two reasons why we played the derby with just one striker: Milan were in better condition than us, also psychologically, and they had come from a series of victories; and I had only two strikers available - Adriano and Martins, because Recoba had a calf problem just before the match. We have always played with two strikers, and sometimes with three. And in any case, the derby was a very balanced game and no team was superior to the other."

Besides Julio Cruz and Obafemi Martins, your only other striker for tomorrow's match is Matteo Momentè. How will you make your choices?
"I'll have no problems choosing... We will play with two strikers."

If a player like Juan Sebastian Veron decides to return to Argentina at the end of the season will you need to find someone with his characteristics or could you also look for something different."
"You can look for other kinds of players. I don't think there's a player like Veron around, but there are players with other characteristics who could fit the bill. More a playmaker or a half-striker? Let's say a midfielder with the inclination to attack and who is good at defending."

Do you have the feeling Veron is more inclined to stay compared with a few months ago?
"I don't know."

MILAN - A Julio Cruz brace and goals from Obafemi Martins and Cesar gave Inter a 4-0 home win over Reggina in Serie A Week 35.

The result keeps Inter five points behind second-placed AC Milan with three games remaining, as the Rossoneri won 3-1 at Messina.

In a spectacular display of attacking football the Nerazzurri were 3-0 up at half time, with Julio Cruz opening the scoring from the penalty spot on 18 minutes after a foul on Pizarro by Modesto.

Moments after the Chilean midfielder saw a shot hit the upright Oba Martins doubled on 23 minutes with a first-time shot past Pelizzoli after a delightful ball into the box from Cristiano Zanetti.

Brazilian winger Cesar rose to head home a Cruz cross on 28 minutes and put Inter in total control.

In between, Serbia&Montenegro midfielder Dejan Stankovic crashed a header from Pizarro's corner on to the Reggina crossbar.

Inter defended their lead in a low-key second half, offering more coming forward than their relegation-threatened opponents. Julio Cruz added insult to injury in added time, directing a Solari pass over the line to make it 4-0.

 APPIANO GENTILE - Roberto Mancini analysed the Nerazzurri's performance in Inter 4-0 Reggina on Inter Channel programme Bordo Campo:

On Saturday Inter started with a 4-3-3 formation which could also have been a 4-4-2. Your thoughts on this?
"It could have been like this, but it was a different situation. We tried a different situation and it went well."

To be honest, we always see you try out different formations than the 4-4-2 in training. Formations that are maybe not used after.
"We usually also try out other things. We had tried out this 4-3-3 and we had been doing it for a while in training and had never used it in a match. We used it a bit in the derby, but by playing in a different way. We have been trying it out for a while because it could be a good solution."

Against Reggina you creating loads of scoring chances right from the start which embarrassed the Calabrians a bit. Perhaps they weren't expecting an Inter with three strikers.
"Perhaps they weren't expecting it because we had never done it. But the interpretation of the match is important. You can play with any formation, but on the pitch it's the players who run, move and want to get the ball and enjoy themselves. The formation is important, but it always depends on the boys when they play."

You found it very easy to play in the first half. The team created a lot and had fun.
"We started off well and created many scoring chances from the start. The match was over at half time, we really did play well."

Do you feel that defending your result in the second half was also out of respect for your opponent?
"When the other team is two or three goals down and the match is going in a certain direction, I think you have to have a bit of respect. And perhaps there was on Saturday."

Obafemi Martins was criticised a lot for the scoring chances missed and the misguided passes. What is happening to him?
" Martins is young and there's definitely enormous room for improvement. Perhaps he's a bit too apprehensive at the moment and he too knows that he could have scored many goals and that he has made a few mistakes. So when he tries to make up for it he sometimes thinks a bit too quickly and sometimes tries to finish in a hurry when instead he could wait a bit. But apart from this I think he has improved a bit this year. But when a player is young the period in which he's making mistakes can pass and then maybe things change. Martins has great potential and I think he can still improve a lot."

Martins hasn't scored the goals he scored in January and February last year. In these months this season he was away at the African Cup of Nations. Is this a coincidence?
"It's not a coincidence. He was away for about a month, and when you're away for a while you feel the effects when you come back. He has definitely paid the consequences of being at the African Cup of Nations. He has also played less and he has obviously scored less."

From a media point of view were you hoping for a calm day after the 4-0 victory over Reggina?
"No. Honestly, no."

But what has changed since Mancini was a player? Do journalists look for problems more or do players have less respect for the rules?
"I think both situations you mentioned are important. Journalists always tend to look for polemics and create a bit of confusion. And sometimes the players could avoid talking. I think these two things have definitely worsened."

Is a coach's work different as a consequence of this?
"Our job has definitely become more difficult. It used to be different."

Reggina coach Mazzarri complained a lot about the penalty given for the foul on Pizarro. Your thoughts?
"I honestly didn't see from the bench. I saw it after on television. The Reggina player probably grazed the ball, but if he hadn't touched it Pizarro could have shot on goal. Perhaps he grazed the ball because it changed direction slightly, but it was still in Pizarro's path. Also, I don't think you could see anything at normal speed, but perhaps you could on television."

Has the championship race reopened?
"It's possible, even though Juventus have some fairly easy matches from now until the end. It was normal for Juventus to drop a few points because you can't always win."

This Juventus seems like the Inter of last year that drew all the time. But is it better to start off well then draw matches, or drop a few points at the start then win all the time?
"It is definitely very important to start off well. Let's say that Juventus are in a bit of difficulty now compared to the start, but they have accumulated such a big advantage that can be handled."

Inter play at Empoli on Sunday. Will you also be thinking about the Tim Cup final?
"We have to try and win at a ground that's not easy because Empoli need points to stay up. We want to win to get more points than last year. It's important to always improve. But three days later there's the first leg of the Tim Cup final and we will clearly also have to take this into account."

We heard your words the day before Inter v Reggina, when you said that you hadn't called Massimo Moratti after the derby defeat because you were a bit ashamed. Then the same evening Moratti said some nice things about you at the dinner held to celebrate ten years of Inter Campus. Are you pleased?
"Definitely, but I don't think there has ever been any lack of faith. There's always a bit of resentment when you don't win, but there has always been faith and I'm pleased about what Moratti said on Friday evening. You can never look back when things have passed. You have to look forward and try not to make the same mistakes again."
