EMPOLI - Marco Materazzi's injury-time own goal gave Empoli a 1-0 victory over Inter at the Stadio Castellani, a result which guarantees the Tuscan outfit Serie A safety, but sees the Nerazzurri lose any remaining chance of a second-place place finish as AC Milan beat Livorno 2-0 at the Meazza.

In the first of three added minutes at the end of the second half the Italian defender beat Empoli substitute Pozzi to a ball then saw his 40-yard back pass sail over Julio Cesar and into the net.

Despite the result Inter had the lion's share of the chances, with Argentine pair Javier Zanetti and Santiago Solari sending long-range shots wide before Buscè rose above Cesar to head a Lucchini cross behind off the crossbar.

Julio Cruz fired wide from 20 yards then Balli saved long-distance efforts from Figo and Zanetti before Obafemi Martins sent a flicked header from Cesar's cross over at the end of the first half.

The Nigerian striker headed over a Javier Zanetti cross, with Balli saving a Pizarro free kick as Inter continued to dominate after the restart.

Empoli were limited to counter-attacks, with Buscè firing wide before Julio Cesar twice intercepted to deny Vannucchi.

With the match heading for a goalless draw Materazzi lobbed into his own net to hand Empoli their fifth consecutive home victory.

APPIANO GENTILE - The day after Inter's 1-0 defeat at Empoli, Roberto Mancini analysed the Nerazzurri's Stadio Castellani performance with Roberto Scarpini on Inter Channel programme Bordo Campo:

Mancini, let's start with your formation in Empoli. You continued with a 4-3-3, even though it could also have been a 4-4-2 due to the versatility of the players who played.
"Yes, it's true. There's not much difference between a 4-3-3 and a 4-4-2. There's not much difference, it depends on how those who play interpret it. If used well, the 4-3-3 perhaps gives us the chance to play with more strikers and attack with more players. It also gives you the chance to defend with the central midfielders. But there's not much difference."

Inter dominated the match. Empoli were more aggressive in the first half but the tempo dropped after the restart.
"It was a faster match in the first half, and this changed also because of the results that came through from the other grounds. In the second half Empoli brought all their players behind the halfway line, and even though we always kept the ball and did better in terms of our game, we had a few problems in the last twenty metres."

Like you said after the match yesterday, you have often had these problems in the last twenty metres this season. You've had lots of ball possession and played many balls, but you've had fewer scoring chances. Do you agree?
"If we have played nine or ten away matches without scoring it means we have had a few problems, otherwise we would have collected more points."

In the second half you fielded three strikers ( Cruz, Martins & Adriano), but as you often say, it's the team's general attitude that makes an attacking team, and not the number of strikers on the pitch. Is this right?
"Yes. If I have three strikers and each time they get the ball they go one on one and create numerical superiority, this situation becomes lethal. But if this doesn't happen everything is a bit more difficult because you give reference points to your opponents and you're without those who get up from the back. We were a bit unlucky yesterday because we were without Stankovic and Cambiasso who are good at getting up. We didn't have that kind of solution."

Even though you underlined the good job done by Javier Zanetti and Santiago Solari who played in different roles from their usual ones.
"This is true. It was their first time in this midfield and they did well. We used this solution because we had many players out, and those two still did well."

Inter didn't give much away to Empoli. This is characteristic of Inter's season away from home: you have conceded the same number of goals at home and away, but you have scored half the number scored at the Meazza. Will this be a starting point for the work you will do to improve, with the Tim Cup final first leg away from home in mind?
"Definitely, even though in Rome on Wednesday it will be a different match and the motivations will be different from the Empoli game. What happened to Inter yesterday must not happen again. The result didn't count for much, but losing is never nice and is always annoying. Inter are obliged to play to win. Away from home we manage to be superior to our opponents in terms of our game, and in those cases a goal can change the match for you. Unfortunately this hasn't happened to us much away from home. We have had this problem."

Rome drew 4-4 with Chievo yesterday. Looking ahead to the Tim Cup final first leg are you more worried about the four goals scored by the Giallorossi or more confident about the four goals conceded?
"What gives me confidence is the fact that we're in good physical form and that we'll have back a few players who rested yesterday. The confidence in the team is unchanged. Also, it's a final and we'll have to be careful because Roma have fast players who run, sprint and move forward quickly."

Inter are mathematically sure of third place in the league.
"This is true and it certainly wasn't our goal. We wanted to do better and we had the chance. The defeat against Juventus in Milan aside, we have had the chances to to do better. Something has probably been lacking. We need to understand what it is and try to improve."

Do you think Juventus wrapped up the Scudetto yesterday?
"Anything can always happen, but I don't believe Juventus will have any problems winning their next two matches."

Roma can still reach that fourth place in the league which means a place in the Champions League qualifying round. Could the Giallorossi be distracted by this in the Tim Cup final? Could the race for fourth place distract your colleague Spalletti a little bit?
(Mancini smiles) "If I were him I'd focus more on the championship... Jokes aside, they're already in the UEFA Cup but getting into the Champions League is always very important for a team."

[FOTO Wednesday, 03 May 2006 22:49:04] ROME - Amantino Mancini replied to a Julio Cruz goal as Roma held Inter 1-1 at the Olimpico to keep the Coppa Italia final perfectly poised ahead of next Thursday's return leg.

Cruz combined with strike partner Adriano to give Inter the lead on eight minutes. The Brazilian forward split open the Giallorossi defence with a deft through ball and El Jardinero obliged, sliding past Doni to silence the Olimpico.

Spurred on by a vociferous 70,000-strong crowd Roma went on to dominate the first half but their only real chance fell to Daniele De Rossi, whose floated cross-shot was turned round by Julio Cesar at the angle between bar and post.

Doni did well to parry Dejan Stankovic's blistering long-distance free kick on the stroke of half time to keep Roma in the game.

Spalletti's side showed no signs of slowing down in the second half and the pressure paid off with a deserved equaliser ten minutes in when Amantino Mancini fired low past Julio Cesar after De Rossi played the Brazilian into space with a neat backheeled pass from Taddei's cross.

Julio Cesar denied Alvarez a dramatic winner with a crucial save from the Roma sub's low diagonal shot in injury time.

At this difficult time for Inter, how important is last night's 1-1 draw at the Olimpico?
"It hasn't been easy for us lately, but last night's draw in Rome is an excellent result for us. They were really motivated, the stadium was packed and the atmosphere was very heated, and we administered the match well. We played better in the first half than after the restart. If they had told me before the match that we would have drawn 1-1, perhaps I would have settled for it."

At Milan they say they wouldn't swap their season with yours, not even if Inter win the Tim Cup. What do you think about this?
"They're two different things. It's nice when you're fighting until the end, I said this before the start of this season. It's more fun. Everyone says this season has gone badly for Inter, but I don't agree. We'll start by winning the Tim Cup then start off next year with the same goals we had this season, and with a bit more determination. Then we will see what happens."

What are the main differences between this year's Inter and last season's team?
"There were many draws last year. This year we have drawn few matches but we have administered less well the important matches and the big clashes. We must put both years together and take the best from both."

How do you show your character if you are an important squad?
"Our squad is definitely important. Inter's squad is one of the five or six best in Europe. For me, you either have character or you don't. It always comes out, but there are times when you need it more. You need to have pride, and show it in the difficult and important moments."

A while ago you said Barcelona and Inter were playing the best football in Europe. Are you still sure of this?
"Yes, even though Inter have found it a bit hard-going in the last month. Things would have gone differently if we had believed until the end."

Adriano was decisive last year. He has done less well this year. What has changed?
" Adriano is a fantastic player. He can't be considered a phenomenon or an emperor one day then just a talent the next. He is a fantastic player and he has showed us all his talents. He has had a bit of a crisis this year, but every striker goes through these periods. We should also consider the fact that he has had a few extra injuries that have blocked his progress. Adriano is an important player in this Inter side."

Do you think Adriano will have a great World Cup?
"Yes, I'm convinced of this. Adriano is strong and he plays in a squad of world-class players."

Do you think many changes need to be made for next year, or does the team just need a few reinforcements?
"It's not up to me to talk about these things. If a few reinforcements are needed the president, the managers and the coach will decide what to do."

Are Cassano and Ronaldo decisive players?
"They have been decisive for every team they have played for. Cassano probably a bit less so because he hasn't played much in Madrid, but he has showed his talents here in Italy. But as I said before, the managers make these decisions."

They say Henry is very close to joining Real Madrid. There are also rumours that you could move to the Spanish capital. Is it just a rumour?
"When the league ends the journalists have fun with the transfer market. As far as I'm concerned, I'm fine at Inter. Maybe I will end my career here when I'm thirty-five. Over the last three years Henry has showed he is one of the best strikers in the world, so it's not surprising that many clubs are after him and that he has many offers."

But can a player who plays for Inter be tempted by other big clubs?
"I already play for a big club. The only problem, in inverted commas, is that Inter hasn't managed to win an important trophy, but it's at the same level as all the big clubs in the world. I don't see why I should change team. I came here to help the team improve. I want to try and win with Inter because like I said when I arrived in Milan two years ago, winning a Scudetto with Inter is worth five at any other team."

Is it dangerous to play the Champions League qualifying round in the World Cup year?
"Not really. The only problem is that pre-season training starts earlier, but twenty-five days holiday are enough to relax, recharge the legs and have the strength to play two important games."

Are Serbia&Montenegro big favourites to win the World Cup?
"We're a great squad and we have great pride. We have managed to give our best, we conceded only one goal in our ten qualifying matches, and we finished the group in first place. At the World Cup we were drawn in the so-called 'Group of Death' with Holland, Argentina and Ivory Coast. Just getting through the group stage will be a success for us."
