FunMobility’s YouTones is the first user-generated ringtone application for the iPhone



FunMobility has recently launch a new application for the iPhone called YouTones. Touted as the “first user-generated ringtone application for iPhone,” it allows iPhone users to easily create custom ringtones or audio messages by combining their own voices with an audio mixing engine to add special sound effects.

According FunMobility, since its introduction in August of this year, YouTones (for other platforms) has become one of the hottest mobile applications on carrier decks, averaging about 10,000 paid downloads a day. Now, iPhone users can create their own ringtones, too, if that’s their goal. YouTones is already available through AppStore for $4.99.

Commenting on the announcement, FunMobility’s CEO Adam Lavine said: “We’re committed to making the best UGC applications available so that consumers have several options to create and publish unique content on today’s most popular platforms and handsets.”

iPhone Dev Team getting closer to a 3G iPhone unlock

It looks like the iPhone Dev Team are getting closer to the elusive unlock of the 3G iPhone.



    Here’s a screenshot of a 3G iPhone whose baseband has been modified.  And even though it’s modified — and fails the integrity check — it’s still running.  Can you guess where the patch was made?

    Running modified baseband code is a very useful ability, but it’s still not possible to accurately estimate how close we are to the ultimate goal.

You have to give these guys respect, they have put a serious amount of work into this and the previous unlocks, lets hope they get a bit of luck and get it unlocked.

6.9 Million iPhone 3Gs sold until now, Apple says

So Apple’s financial results for the fiscal 2008 fourth quarter are out. Said quarter ended on September 27, leaving the Cupertino company with a revenue of $7.9 billion and a huge net profit of $1.14 billion.

An important part of this profit was made thanks to the iPhone 3G, which went on sale starting July this year. Apple reports that, worldwide, there were 6,892,000 iPhone 3Gs sold until September 27. That’s more than the total number of first generation iPhones, which were sold in 6.1 million units in a whole year.     

The high iPhone 3G sales allowed Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO, to pick on Research In Motion, the manufacturer of BlackBerry handsets, by saying:

We sold more phones than RIM.

OK, and? That doesn’t make RIM’s devices “inferior”. Needless to say, their touchscreen BlackBerry Storm is not released yet. And when it will be, it might steal lots of possible iPhone 3G buyers. 



Anyway, apart from iPhones, Apple has also reported excellent Mac and iPod sales. 2,611,000 Macintosh computers were shipped during the last quarter, while 11,052,000 iPod sales were registered.

Intel: ARM's the reason the iPhone... sucks?



Okay, look, whether you adore or despise the iPhone, it's pretty hard to make a cohesive argument that it's slow or lags its competitors in offering the "full Internet." Somehow, though, a pair of Intel execs at the Intel Developer Forum in Taipei this week have whipped up a whole spiel based on the shaky claim that the iPhone's a dog for processing power and isn't capable of offering a rich Internet experience, going on to suggest that ARM architecture is to blame for the nasty pickle Apple's gotten itself into. Here's the best part, though: until only very recently, Intel itself was a huge player in the ARM game with its XScale line, now owned by Marvell. Isn't it too soon to harsh on a technology you so heavily bought into, guys? Of course, the moral of the story -- if you're buying the execs' line, anyway -- is that the iPhone wouldn't suck if they'd gone with an Intel stack, which they claim is a good two years ahead of the best that ARM has to offer. Said Intel's Pankaj Kedia, pressing on with the smack talk: "I know what their roadmap is, I know where they're going and I'm not worried." Of course, knowing the roadmap inside and out gets a little easier when you're a ginormous ARM licensee.
