Adobe Air Launching Officially on October 8th!

About two weeks ago rumors started to surface about Adobe launching its Air run-time on the Android Market. According to TalkAndroid Adobe announced that Air will in fact be hitting the Android Market on the rumored release date.

What’s so great about AIR?

Adobe Air allows you to publish ActionScript 3 projects to run as a native application (apk.) for the Android OS. Air will give developers the power to write new code or reuse existing web content when building new AIR applications. Having a reusable source code and assets across other flash run times, Adobe Air, or Flash Player allows developers to target other mobile and desktop environments easier.

A word from the chief architect for BlogRadio, Bruce Hopkins

“It took about four days for us to make the AIR Android version, and 1/2 of those days were spent getting up to speed with the Android tools.

“Code reuse? You bet. Both the desktop and mobile clients use the same interfaces and api calls to interact with server-side infrastructure (which includes our web services platform and our FMS 3.5 servers).

“Two different clients and one server interface; we love AIR!”

PayPal Payments on Android Market Coming This Month?

After this spring's news about PayPal coming soon for app purchases from Android Market besides iPhone App Store we recently heard that PayPal is in the talks with Google to bring its payment and billing services to Android for Google's Market purchases.

According to recent rumors, the two companies reached an agreement which will enable PayPal's services to be used for Android Market purchases starting later on this month. Even more TheStreet's Scott Moritz reported "sources familiar with the situation say the deal is all but sealed, with an announcement coming as early as Oct. 26 during the PayPal developers’ conference in San Francisco". PayPal's having the upper hand here with its services available in more than 200 countries over Google's Checkout who's currently reaching out to under a quarter of PayPal's. Will this boost Android Market sales? Are you a person who always wanted to buy an app from the Market, you couldn't and you will be able to using PayPal?

I is for Ice Cream: Android OS 4.0

We’ve got a name for the next next release of the Android Operating System.  Gingerbread will be out fairly soon, then Honeycomb, and next up: Ice Cream.

Forbes blog has the “scoop” from ARM president Tudor Brown.  The Cambridge, England-based company says its processor technology is used in more than 95% of the world’s cellphones and over one-quarter of all electronic devices.  That includes plenty of Android devices.

It was Samsung, not Google, who divulged the Honeycomb name at a trade show, so there is precedent for a partner passing along this information.

Google isn’t commenting about future release names.  Expected release dates for upcoming versions are end of the year for Gingerbread, early 2011 for Honeycomb, and mid-year 2011 for Ice Cream.

Forbes also wonders how the expected statue commerating the Ice Cream release will be distinguished from the Froyo statue already at Google headquarters’ front lawn.

Android Gingerbread Screen-Off Animation

What happens when you turn your Android's screen off? Right now the screen goes off, right?

Some of us still remember when TV's were big cathode ray tubes that took time to "warm up" and were just a "little" thicker than the LCD and plasma panels that we have today. When you turned off the screen there was sort of a "pinch" effect that ended in either a line across the screen, or a bright dot in the middle. That's just the way the technology worked.

If the folks over at Phadroid are correct, Gingerbread (the next version of Android) comes with a little eye candy when turning off the screen -- a throwback to the CRT days of old. Take a look!

PayPal coming to Android Market Nov 2? [rumor]

Rumor alert!  I've received a tip from a very trustworthy source that Google will announce support for PayPal payments in the Android Market on Nov. 2.  It's no secret that PayPal and Google have been working on making it happen, and we honestly expected an announcement last week during PayPal's developer's forum, but it didn't materialize.

We take all rumors with a grain of salt (and you should, too!), but the details surrounding this one sure sound right, and I'm going with it.  There's not much more I can say, but be on the lookout for this news as well as some other announcements from developers and publishers on Nov. 2. Thanks to our anonymous friend!

Nexus One Getting Android 2.3 “Gingerbread” Update In “The Next Few Days”?

Google had originally wanted to launch the Nexus Two device alongside Android 2.3, the next release of their mobile operating system, also known as “Gingerbread”. That’s not going to happen. The Nexus Two has been delayed. But it appears that Google is full steam ahead on the Gingerbread release. In fact, it may be hitting the Nexus One in the next few days.

This news comes by way of a tweet today from one Alvaro Fuentes Vasquez. While Vasquez’s Twitter profile may not show much, his LinkedIn profile reveals that he’s on the “leadership team” of the Open Handset Alliance, one of the governing bodies backing Android. In other words, this guy should know what he’s talking about.

His Tweet today:
Citat

That translates (roughly) to:
Citat
Prepare your Nexus One (Developer version) for Android OTA update 2.3 (Gingerbread) in the next few days:-D

This news, spotted by the blog The Android Phone, goes along nicely with the rumorsfrom last week that Gingerbread would land on November 11. For those keeping score at home, November 11 is this coming Thursday — a few days away.

The Nexus One roll-out plan also goes along with the way Google rolled out Android 2.2, late at night back in May. Further, a strange Flash Player for Android note seems to suggest an Android update is imminent as well.

And remember, a couple weeks ago, the Gingerbread Man landed at Google HQ.
