Android 2.2 Froyo source code available today

It's still not hitting the bulk of Nexus Ones as far as we can tell, but for what it's worth, Google has unleashed the source code for Android 2.2 today, which is a solid sign that the code's been bulletproofed to the Open Handset Alliance's satisfaction and is ready for deployment across a number of phones from different manufacturers and carriers. It's still ultimately up to a bunch of gatekeepers in suits to decide when various models will get the upgrade, but this is basically zero day -- so let the countdown begin.

Mobile Viewer Brings Google Docs to Android Handsets

Google Docs has made document portability a breeze for the desktop, and now you will be able to access the same files from your Android handset with the newly released version of the mobile viewer. Accessible now on Android devices as well as iPhone and iPad, the mobile viewer allows you to view PDFs, .ppt, .doc, and .docx document types without ever downloading a file.

Users need only head to docs.google.com to load the new version of the Google Docs mobile viewer. It doesn’t look like the Android version supports pinch to zoom at the moment, but document viewing is quick and easy to navigate. Power users of Google Docs should be pleased.

HTC Desire, Legend and Wildfire to get Froyo (2.2) by October

HTC is having to play cat and mouse once again it seems, following Google's roll out of Android 2.2: Froyo for the Nexus One, as it looks to update its latest handsets with the latest build.

"We are working hard with our partners to update the HTC Sense experience on Froyo [2.2] and distribute it to our customers as fast as possible. We expect to release updates for several of our 2010 models including Desire, Legend and Wildfire beginning in Q3".

Is the official line from the company in a statement to Pocket-lint.

The news, while welcomed by most HTC Legend and Desire owners, will also bring with it frustration that yet again they are being forced to wait months to get the most recent version of Android on their phones.

HTC Hero owners have had to wait over a year before being bumped from Android 1.5 to Android 2.1, something that is only just rolling out this week.

While the Nexus one can easily get the latest updates as they happen thanks to its unfettered operating system approach, HTC's decision to offer a skin, the Sense UI, on top of standard Android is clearly slowing the update process down.

Should Google slow down the updates to just one a year, or is the every couple of months approach better? Let us know in the comments below.

Zadovoljio bi se i sa Vanilla ROM-om za Hero-a (bolje išta nego ništa).

Official Froyo for Nexus One Being Rolled Out Now

According to a post at Google's Nexus One Blog, the "official" Android 2.2 ("Froyo") update for Nexus One is being rolled out over-the-air (OTA) even as we speak.

According to the post, "Starting today <06/28/2010>, Nexus One users will begin to receive the Android 2.2 (codenamed Froyo) over-the-air software update on their phones. <...> In order to access the update, you will receive a message on your phone's notification bar. Just download the update, wait for it to install, and you should be all set."

Google goes on to say that the upgrade will be a gradual process. "This update will be rolled out gradually to phones - and most users will receive the notification by the end of the week."

Of course, this update only applies to phones that are running Google's stock Nexus One ROM. Those of us using custom ROMs (such as CyanogenMod) will have to wait for those ROMs to be updated by their respective ROM developers.

Od sada bilo ko može da napravi Android aplikaciju

Era WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) razvoja mobilnih aplikacija je upravo počela.

PretpAn application is born just by combining building blocks and arranging components on the screen. We suppose that this will boost the growth of Android Market even faster. Zato, šta čekate, prijavite se na ovoj lokaciji i isprobajte App Inventor čim postane dostupan.

HTC beginning Froyo rollout tomorrow? Maybe, maybe not

HTC Europe director Mark Moons caused quite a stir this morning when he tweeted that the company would begin rolling out Android Froyo updates to devices tomorrow, starting with the Desire, but we wouldn't get too excited yet -- HTC tells us that it's possible a rollout will begin tomorrow, but nothing's finalized yet pending some final testing. We've certainly got our fingers crossed -- and we're sure Desire owners the world over will be hitting that System Updates button nonstop for the next few days.

Android Takes A New Approach To Fighting Piracy With Licensing Service

Pirates looking to illegally copy Android applications are about to face a new challenge: today, Google’s Android team announced  that it is releasing a new application Licensing Service for Android. The service, which is meant to help developers secure their applications from piracy, forces apps to ping Google’s home server at regular intervals to verify that they were legitimately purchased. Fail that check, and the app can lock you out.

According to the Dev Guide, developers are free to decide how they want to deal with an application that is deemed to be pirated (a developer could disable the app entirely, or perhaps they could activate a trial mode prompting the user to purchase the real thing). Only paid apps can currently be used with the service, though I’m not sure why you’d want to pirate a free one.  The feature can be implemented on Android versions 1.5 and above using a set of official libraries.

Of course, cloud-based verification requires that your phone has network access — Google’s guide says that in the event that a device can’t communicate with the server, developers can add license caching behaviors. For example, you could set you app to only require verification, say, once a week.

So why go through all of this? Android has historically stored applications in a device’s internal storage — often with only be a few hundred megabytes or less available — but it recently began allowing developers to add support for encrypted SD card installs as well (SD cards typically offer far more storage space).  But now Google appears to be abandoning the copy protection strategy in favor of this server-side verification. Google gives a few reasons for this:

    * A limitation of copy protection is that applications using it can be installed only on compatible devices that provide a secure internal storage environment. For example, a copy-protected application cannot be downloaded from Market to a device that provides root access, and the application cannot be installed to a device’s SD card.
    * With Android Market licensing, you can move to a license-based model in which access is not bound to the characteristics of the host device, but to your publisher account on Android Market and the licensing policy that you define. Your application can be installed and controlled on any compatible device on any storage, including SD card.

If this effectively wards off pirates then it will be great news for Android developers, but it adds one more potential issue for users: it’s up to devs to decide how often they want to have their application phone home to request verification, and an over-restrictive application could be really frustrating if you’re trying to use it on a plane or in an area with poor connectivity. That said, if a developer implements a policy that forces you to ping Google’s servers every time you launch the app for no good reason, then it’s probably going to get hammered with negative reviews.
