1. Hitler wanted to be a priest when he was a child.

In Hitler’s “Mein Kampf” he speaks highly about the local abbot, saying “What could be more natural for me than to look upon the Abbot as representing the highest human ideal worth striving for”. It turns out Hitler attended a parochial school in Lambach, Austria. He was also a choirboy and altar server at his local church.

2. Hitler’s first crush was a Jewish girl, although he never had the courage to tell her.

When Hitler was 16, he fell head over heels for a Jewish girl by the name of Stefanie Isak. The hypocrisy speaks for itself although what’s disturbing is that he never had the courage to talk to her and expressed fantasies of first kidnapping her and running away, and later on (when she ignored his fond gazes) thought of committing suicide with her.

3. Hitler had a nephew by the name of William Patrick Hitler who joined the U.S. Navy and fought against him.

Hitler’s half-brother Alois Hitler Jr. had a son by the name of William Patrick Hitler who was born in Liverpool, England and moved to Germany in 1933 to work for his powerful uncle. Not appreciating the work given and after writing blackmail letters, Hitler requested that William renounce his British citizenship. Fearing a trap, William left Germany. In 1939 while on a lecture tour in the U.S. with his mother, WW2 broke out. At this point, William decided to write a letter to President Franklin D Roosevelt to be allowed to join the fight as part of the US Navy and was allowed to do so. Imagine the awkward moment when he had to declare any known relatives he would be fighting.

4. Hitler planned to kill all residents in Moscow and replace it with a lake.

As part of the plan to invade and capture Moscow, Hitler planned to open the sluices of the Moscow-Volga Canal and create an artificial lake to permanently submerge it. Unfortunately for the Nazis, their plan to take on Russia was their downfall.

He must have been good at his job, because after being fired at by 7 bunker buster bombs and 20 cruise missiles it was pretty much unscratched. It contained a power station, air filtration plant and water treatment, and would have allowed people to live in it for more than 12 months with dried food and fresh supplies in the cold storage rooms.

6. Hitler lost one of his testicles during the First World War.

At the Battle of the Somme in 1916, Hitler was grievously wounded in the abdomen and lost one testicle. He was saved by a German medic who referred to him as a “screamer”. At the time he only had one question for the doctor which was “Will I be able to have children?”

7. Hitler adopted a vegetarian diet and stood against animal cruelty

While there are accounts of Hitler having consumed meat up until 1937, at some point he adopted a vegetarian diet and was happy to let this be a part of his public image. Apparently he also didn’t drink alcohol or smoke. While there are contradictory speculations as to his diet, there are known reports that he was distressed by images of animal cruelty and believed in animal rights.

8. In 1939, Hitler was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize
Although he wasn’t awarded, Hitler was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1939 by a member of the Swedish parliament (E.G.C. Brandt). Apparently it was only intended as a joke due to the political debate in Sweden at the time.

9. Adolf Hitler had 42 known assassination attempts on his life.
When you become the most hated man in recent history, it’s not without risks. There were over 40 attempts to take his life which even included his own administration. Unfortunately for those who made the attempt, many ended up perishing themselves while Hitler lived on and eventually committed suicide at the end of the war.

10. Hitler dropped out of high school in 1905.
At the age of 16, Hitler dropped out of high school and despite his mother’s wish for him to learn a trade or get a job, he had dreams of becoming an artist. It is also known that he had to repeat his 6th year, and was rejected twice from an acclaimed art school. During his time gallivanting as a teen he met a good friend by the name of Linz Kubizek who learnt many of Hitler’s wildest dreams and fantasies, many of which Hitler orated with passion to his audience of one.

11. Hitler relied heavily on drugs.
Only recently discovered records and letters from Hitler’s physician show that he was often prescribed a cocktail of more than 80 different drugs each day. Pervitin in particular was his favorite (the main ingredient in crystal meth), and was issued to troops on his front line.

12. Hitler was obsessed with his niece, Geli Raubal.

Hitler is known for having an unusual sex life, and in this case, a rather unsettling one. He was highly obsessed with his niece and rumor had it that the relationship was of a sexual nature. He never allowed her to get out and meet with friends, and as result of all this, she committed suicide when she was just 23 years old in 1931.

13. Hitler was addicted to chocolate.

Perhaps an odd fact many people don’t know is that Hitler used to eat approximately one kilogram of chocolate every day. He even tried to kill Winston Churchill with a bomb disguised in dark chocolate and wrapped in black and gold paper which was luckily discovered by British agents.
