“Published in Sydney newspapers, by the then Commissioner of Police to demonstrate to press and public that police could operate undercover. In answer to a suggestion that so distinctive was the build of the average detective, effective undercover work was out of the question. Seen here are a mix of detectives and civilians. The figure third from the right is believed to be Sergeant Frank Fahy, aka “The Shadow”, the force’s most effective undercover operative at the time.”

“In 1971, Germany’s Armed Forces lifted a rule that conscripts could only have close-shorn hair. The only restriction was men with shoulder-length manes had to wear hair nets - the Armed Forces ordered 740,000 nets. Some soldiers worried wearing nets for extended periods could be damaging to their health. The  Forces appointed a commission to investigate.

“Doctors stated it was impossible to care for long manes in a way that would make them fit for combat. The commission also noted longer hair required greater amounts of water, as well as hair dryers, putting a strain on military budgets.

“Fifteen months later, the defense minister decided a soldier’s hair could not touch his uniform or collar and that hair could not cover a person’s eyes or ears.”
