U.S. Tries Putting Patriots on F-15s

U.S. fighter jets laden with Patriot missiles may one day help shoot down incoming ballistic missiles, Lockheed Martin officials said.
Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control is working with the U.S. Missile Defense Agency to put Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3) missiles under the wing of an F-15 fighter, said Mike Trotsky, the division’s vice president.
The firm is working under a contract from 2005 worth roughly $2 million. A new contract, expected to be worth about $3 million, will start work with other fighter planes.
“We’re looking at the F-16. F-22, F-35, F-15,” said Trotsky.
Developers say the PAC-3, which is normally fired from ground launch tubes, could be fitted on fighter jets, whose speed and maneuverability can put them in a better position to fire upon incoming missiles. Trotsky outlined various threat scenarios under which “a PAC-3 on an aircraft would be in a position to take the shot.”
Another advantage, Lockheed officials say, is that PAC-3-equipped tactical aircraft could intercept an approaching threat in a much less expensive fashion than diverting Aegis ships or Patriot battalions for the mission.
The program, called Air-Launch Hit-to-Kill (ALHTK), is being developed for boost phase intercepts as well as for homeland defense against cruise missiles or tactical ballistic missiles.
A statement from Lockheed developers said “the weight of the PAC-3 and any associated launch container will be well within the capabilities of the aircraft mentioned.”
The plane’s sensors would feed fire-control data to the missile, developers said.

Da, a ja danas gledao na kablovskoj (ne znam da li je bio History ili explorer) emisiju o tome koliko je patriot neefikasan, nisam mogao da verujem koliko je omanuo u oba zalivska rata. Imali su srecu sto je SCUD toliko neprecizan inace bi bilo svasta.

kad sam prvi put ovo pročitao došlo mi je napamet......"ASAT project".......neznam zašto.......

jja sam tu emisiju gledao davno ne moze da pogodi a ako pogodi samo ga dokaci i nenanese nikakvu stetu scud-u

...With the old Patriot, known as PAC-2, a radar scanned the sky for missiles or airplanes. (By the way, this earlier model was designed to shoot down planes, not missiles. There is no reason to doubt the report that a Patriot accidentally shot down a British fighter jet.) If an object appeared in the sky, it reflected the radar signal, which bounced back. A computer identified the object and tracked its flight path. After this information was processed, a Patriot missile was launched. The Patriot was tipped with a large fragmentary warhead. When it reached a certain distance from the target, the warhead exploded, blowing up the target (or such was the hope) in the process. The PAC-3 utilizes a more precise, longer-range radar and faster data-processing systems. And the missile doesn't carry a warhead; rather, it is designed to slam into the target (this is why it's called an HTK, or "hit-to-kill," weapon). There are two major advantages to HTK, in theory. First, if the Patriot is fired mistakenly or wildly misses, it won't explode when it falls back to earth. Second, there is less room for fudging the definition of "intercept"—the term means that the Patriot actually hit the target. (Whether the target is destroyed, however, remains an issue.)

Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3)

Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3) is a high/medium advanced surface-to-air guided missile air defense system. PAC-3 is a major upgrade to the Patriot system. The PAC-3 Operational Requirements Document (ORD) represents the Army Air Defense need to buy back required battlespace lost against the current and evolving tactical missile and air breathing threat. PAC-3 is needed to ounter/defeat/destroy the 2008 threat and to extend Patriot's capabilities to accomplish new/revised missions. In tandem with the upgraded radar and ground control station, PAC-3 interceptors can protect an area about seven times greater than the original Patriot system....

drugo je sta pisu ameri scud uopste nije tako dobar stavise los je

Sa, cak su naveli primer gde  patriot pogodi telo SCUD-a ali glava nastavi da pada ka zemlji i detonira, iako izmenjenom putanjom, ali za takvu raketu to je sve jedno, ionako ne moze precizno da pogodi cilj koji gadja pa se gadja gusto naseljena zona tako da gde god udari nanese stetu.

Ма знам све то,сви смо видели оне снимке када Скад,односно његово тело бива уништено Патриотом над,чини ми се Тел Авивом,а глава пада на земљу и експлодира,али сигуран сам да су то уочили и Амери,па се да очекивати да је ово побољшана верзија...

Nadam se da jeste. Koliko sam razumeo problem je bio sto kada se patriot priblizi meti radarski upaljac posalje signal koji se odbije od mete i glava patriota eksplodira, medjutim za to vreme dok se odvija proces slanja, odbijanja i obrade signala prodje taman toliko vremena da eksplozija zakasni, sto se moze lako resiti usmeravanjem eksplozije i drugacije usmerenim snopom upaljaca. Mozda je ovo laicki ali meni deluje logicno.

The Patriot Missile Failure

On February 25, 1991, during the Gulf War, an American Patriot Missile battery in Dharan, Saudi Arabia, failed to track and intercept an incoming Iraqi Scud missile. The Scud struck an American Army barracks, killing 28 soldiers and injuring around 100 other people. A report of the General Accounting office, GAO/IMTEC-92-26, entitled Patriot Missile Defense: Software Problem Led to System Failure at Dhahran, Saudi Arabia reported on the cause of the failure. It turns out that the cause was an inaccurate calculation of the time since boot due to computer arithmetic errors. Specifically, the time in tenths of second as measured by the system's internal clock was multiplied by 1/10 to produce the time in seconds. This calculation was performed using a 24 bit fixed point register. In particular, the value 1/10, which has a non-terminating binary expansion, was chopped at 24 bits after the radix point. The small chopping error, when multiplied by the large number giving the time in tenths of a second, led to a significant error. Indeed, the Patriot battery had been up around 100 hours, and an easy calculation shows that the resulting time error due to the magnified chopping error was about 0.34 seconds. (The number 1/10 equals 1/24+1/25+1/28+1/29+1/212+1/213+.... In other words, the binary expansion of 1/10 is 0.0001100110011001100110011001100.... Now the 24 bit register in the Patriot stored instead 0.00011001100110011001100 introducing an error of 0.0000000000000000000000011001100... binary, or about 0.000000095 decimal. Multiplying by the number of tenths of a second in 100 hours gives 0.000000095×100×60×60×10=0.34.) A Scud travels at about 1,676 meters per second, and so travels more than half a kilometer in this time. This was far enough that the incoming Scud was outside the "range gate" that the Patriot tracked. Ironically, the fact that the bad time calculation had been improved in some parts of the code, but not all, contributed to the problem, since it meant that the inaccuracies did not cancel.

The following paragraph is excerpted from the GAO report.

The range gate's prediction of where the Scud will next appear is a function of the Scud's known velocity and the time of the last radar detection. Velocity is a real number that can be expressed as a whole number and a decimal (e.g., 3750.2563...miles per hour). Time is kept continuously by the system's internal clock in tenths of seconds but is expressed as an integer or whole number (e.g., 32, 33, 34...). The longer the system has been running, the larger the number representing time. To predict where the Scud will next appear, both time and velocity must be expressed as real numbers. Because of the way the Patriot computer performs its calculations and the fact that its registers are only 24 bits long, the conversion of time from an integer to a real number cannot be any more precise than 24 bits. This conversion results in a loss of precision causing a less accurate time calculation. The effect of this inaccuracy on the range gate's calculation is directly proportional to the target's velocity and the length of the the system has been running. Consequently, performing the conversion after the Patriot has been running continuously for extended periods causes the range gate to shift away from the center of the target, making it less likely that the target, in this case a Scud, will be successfully intercepted.
