Preview: St. Patrick's Athletic v Dundalk

it's over forty-five years since Saint Patrick's Athletic last lifted the FAI Cup but they will be hoping to advance against first division opposition at Richmond Park on Saturday evening. A resurgent Dundalk provide the opposition.

Dundalk are unbeaten in ten league games, winning seven of them to move second in the First Division of the eircom League. They have also impressively kept four clean-sheets in their last five games.

The Saints are currently seventh in the Premier Division but have a game in hand on Bohemians who also have a points deduction hanging over their heads. They haven't been too consistent in recent weeks but did cause Derry a number of problems before eventually losing 3-1 at the Brandywell two weeks ago.

The Saints must plan without Keith Fahey, who is cup-tied after playing for Drogheda in the second round. John Frost missed out on the Saints league draw with Longford last week and he may return.

Christy Doran is cup-tied for Dundalk but John Flanagan is back after a ban.

Preview: Sligo Rovers v Bray Wanderers

Sligo Rovers will look to beat Bray Wanderers for the second week running and the third time this season as the two sides meet for a place in the last eight of the FAI Cup on Saturday evening.

Sligo boss Sean Connor has an eye on collecting silverware this season and particularly a place in the Setanta Sports Cup. Lifting the FAI Cup would give Rovers that passage into the All-Ireland competition.

Sligo have to plan without Brian Cash who is cup-tied after playing for Derry in the second round. Paul McTiernan is fit and available though. Although sent off in last week's win over Bray, Gavin Peers doesn't serve a ban until Sligo's next league game and is available for selection.

Bray have now lost their last five league games and have failed to score in their last two.

Robbie Doyle is back after a one game ban for the Seagulls, as is Phillip Keogh. Goalkeeper Gary Rogers is cup-tied so Chris O'Connor should return between the posts. Also ineligible are fellow recent signings Chris Deans and Lee Roche. Colm Tresson is back after injury as is Colin Vint.

Bray will be hoping to build on the charmed existence they showed in round two, when a late late equaliser denied Kildare a shock at the Carlisle Grounds. Stephen Fox denied the Thoroughbreds a place in the third round with an equaliser deep in injury time.

Preview: Finn Harps v Athlone Town

Finn Harps have turned their fortunes around in recent weeks and are back in contention in the first division title race. On Saturday night they get the distraction of an FAI Cup tie against fellow first division side Athlone Town. Athlone are well out of the running in league action.

Harps edged past non-league Crumlin United in the second round and are five games unbeaten in the league, including a 2-1 win over Athlone in July. That result is one of six straight losses in Athlone's awful losing streak.

Harps will have Chris Malseed and Stephen O'Donnell back from suspensions but Gary Crossan is not expected to feature as he is linked with a loan move to Irish League side Institute.

Stephen Mullan and Michael Collins have recently departed from Athlone. Ian Rossitor could return after injury for Athlone but Robbie Hamm is not expected to feature.

Bookmaker is Skybet, this should be changed when all problems are going to be solved...

Most bookies have 2,25 for Tecos win, which are fair odds, IMO, while Skybet have 2,75, which is very good price, IMO.

Tecos played awful game two weeks ago and lost 1-6 to Atlas at home (though, they conceded 5 goals with 10 men), but improved last week and managed to draw at Veracruz. Now, they will be back to their home and they should continue to improve.

Jaguares, like I wrote in previous weeks, are not same team who played excellent in previous tournamnet. Beside coach and four key players who left, important midfielder Everaldo de Assis (***) is out through suspension. Jaguares started with two wins (against Necaxa and Gallos Blancos), but lost to Pumas at home last week and they are usually weaker away from home.

Tecos' defenders Juan Carlos Leaño and Diego Colotto are doubtful, but latest news say that these two players will be ready to play on Sunday. Their 1st goalkeeper José de Jesús Corona made a mistake last week, but it was only his first game after recovery from injury, he should be more and more sure in next games.

2006-08-27  América  - Veracruz


I see América as the biggest favourite in this weekend's action of Torneo Apertura 2006.

It is true, América started bad for their standards, their fans are not satisfied with team's performances, their highly rated (and highly paid) new strikers disappointed in opening 3 games. They scored only twice, one goal was scored from dubious penalty kick, other goal was scored by youngster. However, Águilas have great squad, excellent coach, and it is only matter of time when they will start playing on their level, IMO. Good news is that Cuauhtémoc Blanco has recovered and will be able to play for some 30 minutes.

Veracruz are certainly not on the level of América and although they collected same number of points in opening 3 games, Águilas are class above them. Veracruz managed to beat poor Gallos Blancos at home, only, while they couldn't beat Tecos at home last week and lost comfortably at Pumas (1-3) two weeks ago.

If Veracruz don't improve significantly, I can't see them avoiding defeat at Azteca, despite the fact that home Águilas are not in their top form.

San Luis didn't win, didn't collect a single point and didn't even score a single goal in opening 3 games of Torneo Apertura 2006. They don't look like a team who played in the final of Torneo Clausura 2006 (lost to Pachuca) and it looks like that they will have to battle against relegation again at the end of Torneo Clausura 2007. Good news: Gallos Blancos are poor.

Tigres started well, with two home wins (Tecos and Morelia) and draw against Águilas del América at Azteca. They have excellent squad, their coach is one of the best in Mexico at the moment (José Luis Trejo has won the title with Pachuca in previous tournament), most importantly, they are playing very well. Chamagol is in very good form, Rolando Zárate has recovered from injury, while another new signings like Luis Fernando Saritama and John Restrepo showed that they are going to be great addition to the team, captained by excellent Walter Gaitán.

Except for the fact that San Luis (Israel Martínez (**) and Ailton Da Silva (**) are suspended) play at home, everything else is in favour of Tigres and I think that they will at least draw at San Luis.

Sutra na Borussia Park stiže Arminia, koja u posljednjih 8 gostovanja u Gladbachu nije zabila gol! Od 13 utakmica u Gladbachu, domaćini su dobili čak 10 uz 2 remija, dok su gosti slavili samo jednom i to davne 1970. godine.
